View Full Version : How Hard is it to Mod a PSP?
Billbofet 06-23-08, 03:38 PM I am interested in maybe picking up a PSP Slim and putting the custom firmware on to play ps1 games.
Wondering if this is difficult to do? I have a pretty good understanding of firmware and software upgrades, but I'm nervous about bricking the thing.
Plus, once the customer firmware is installed, do I lose any functionality on the psp such as remote play, web browsing or any other features?
Also, what happens when a new game releases and has the new firmware on the disc - how is that avoided.
Thanks in advance.
Newer firmware cracks are released all the time to break updated firmwares that some games require. I don't know the specifics since I don't have the system anymore, but I never bricked mine. Google is your friend :)
bryansj 06-23-08, 03:59 PM It would be easy to mod if you have access to a modded PSP. If you don't have access to one then you will need to open your battery and cut a trace on the battery's circuit board. The battery will still be usable, but you are running a risk of messing up your battery. Another option is to just buy a special battery, but they are usually marked up in cost. The chance of bricking your PSP is very low since the method of modding it involves putting it into service mode with the modded battery (pandora battery). Once in service mode you can load a custom firmware or an official firmware from a memory stick.
The custom firmware update usually shows up a week or two after the official firmware and can even be updated using the same wifi update method as the original firmware. Also, the custom firmware has all the features of the official firmware. Like Martez says Google is your friend.
Very easy to do. Also, no need to worry about bricking. You can always unbrick it. Do a search for Dark Alex and/or eBay pandora battery. Best of luck!
Lots of people offer the service for cheap on craigslist as well. Once you've done it, updating to the latest and greatest hacked firmware is easy.
98cobra 06-23-08, 04:43 PM I have a friend that did this for his PSP, he loves it, free games all the way if you know what you are doing, but once you get the custom firmware loaded you do not want to do any updates to the PSP. For the free games just load them on the memory card and have a game in the drive to boot to.
bdwright77 06-23-08, 05:06 PM OT: Can you access your PS3 via your PSP over any internet connection. Meaning...the PS3 is networked at home, can I use my PSP on my work's wireless connection to access my PS3?
DaGamePimp 06-23-08, 05:11 PM Aww come on guys , AVS does not condone this type of chat here ( most of you have been here long enought to know that ) , there are plenty of boards for that all over the net ;) .

Yes, your friend's "free games" end up costing me more money on legitimate ones.
So, tell him for me that he's a dick.
Thanks.
avgjoemomma 06-23-08, 06:56 PM I added CFW on my PSP due to the homebrew apps. I like playing my old Nintendo games on it. Also, to save on battery I usually copy over my UMDs to the memory stick. Sony has been doing a great job with giving us PSP demos so try those and buy the real games you pirates.

Erm, where did I say that? Making a backup of a game you own is legal in the USA. I only copy UMDs and play NES roms of games I own.

I'm no lawyer so I can't say if they'd win, but Nintendo's stance (and everything I've read before) is that you must make the backup of games yourself. I seriously doubt you backed up your NES roms (let alone have the actual catridges for all the roms you have, but it's the internet and you'll say you do).

Yeah that's the issue. I don't have the hardware to make the backups myself but I do have all my original cartridges :) I'll have to look into how to make copies myself I guess
