Barco premieres small venue digital cinema projector at Cinema Expo Amsterdam.
Kortrijk, Belgium, 25 June 2008. At the Cinema Expo trade show, digital cinema pioneer Barco has introduced the DP-1200, a custom-designed cinema projector for the small venue market.. Thanks to the DP-1200, smaller theaters now also have access to digital cinema at an affordable price.

Built on the field-proven technology of the Barco DP series, the DP-1200 has been designed for screens up to 12m (40ft) wide. Using the 0.98 inch DLP Cinema chip from Texas Instruments, the DP-1200 builds on the strengths of the DP-1500 and DP-2000 platform. Barco paid particular attention to further optimize the operating cost, by making low wattage 2kW and 1.2kW lamps available for use in the DP1200.

In addition, the DP-1200 incorporates all the traditional Barco benefits such as a modular design, a motorized single lens solution, optimal protection of the optics and low ventilation requirements. The communicator software and SNMP agent provide customers with an easy key to operate their digital cinema projector.

Wim Buyens, Vice President Digital Cinema, states: “With the introduction of the DP-1200, Barco now has a complete series of digital cinema projectors, offering a tailor made solution for any budget or screen size.” Wim continues: “Barco’s DP series bundles cost competitive digital cinema projector solutions with high product reliability and ease of use.”

You can visit Barco at Cinema Expo from 23 until 26 June at the RAI in Amsterdam.

There are numerous improvements applicable to this set, the elctronics power supply can be ups separately, and the convergence board is now much more user friendly, like the original Barco DP100.

There is new software too, the lens aspect ratio change routine is performed quicker. The unit will be released in September here, at end of October they will release another software revision to quiet down the fan noise by 15 db.

Although this unit is 3-d capable, it will not have the built in Dolby wheel controller that the dp-1500-3000 currently have.

My DP-1500 has a built in Dolby wheel controller? What does that mean exactly? Is it hardware or software that simply allows the wheel to be installed at a later date? I am using RealD but want to learn more about Dolby. Thanks.
