View Full Version : USB speed greater than 480 Mbps?

I'm copying from my Panny SD9 to my hard drive, and the info says the 5.1 GB of data is transferring at 7.5 MB/sec. Now, since there are 8 bits to a byte, that would mean 7.5 x 8 bits = about 600 Mbps. Isn't USB 2 capped at 480? This is a sustained read from Class 6 card in the Panny, to my Ubuntu hard drive. I would expect an initial burst at that rate, but not the sustained transfer indicated throughout the 6-7 minutes it took to move that amount.

It's early in the morning, so is there something elementary I'm missing? Thanks.

It is early in the morning, and what you are missing is that 7.5 x 8 is 60 and not 600. USB actually has throughputs considerably less that its rated max, which is just a burst speed.

I knew that something there didn't make sense, and am glad to know it was just ME. Thanks for the diplomatic response! :)

Here's a nice comparison (http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/14882/11) of USB transfer speeds from today's modern chipsets.
