View Full Version : Few pics from my HC1500.
terminatorbob 06-30-08, 01:56 PM The room is not completely done yet. When I get the time Im going to paint the walls a darker color so they don't reflect so much light. I still need to hide the wires. I also still need furniture.
The projector is a Mitsubishi HC1500. It is a DLP 720P projector and is being projected onto a 100" diagonal 16:9 screen. Screen shots are from The 5th Element (obviously) on blu-ray and are being played on a PS3.
So far I am VERY impressed.

Infamous1 06-30-08, 02:50 PM Wow didnt realize the projector was this sharp. Lookin good.
Wytchone 06-30-08, 08:47 PM Grats on your new PJ!
Looking good.
Luis Gabriel Gerena 06-30-08, 09:36 PM Congrats on the PJ...nothing beats FP setups. BTW, not sure if its the color balance on the pictures but you may want to make sure you are using 6500 color temp..then again, its yours eyes the ones you need to please. :-)
terminatorbob 06-30-08, 10:05 PM I havnt really messed with the picture settings all that much with the exception of the brightness. I was pretty happy with the way it looks. I may see if I can dial it in a bit over the forth. How do you achieve a 6500 color temp?
terminatorbob 07-01-08, 01:56 AM Few more. Couldn't get these to turn out quite as good though. But all of these are just downloads from the playstation network. So they aren't as sharp as blu-ray to begin with.

theshadow1234 07-01-08, 07:39 AM Great Pics! Looks Awesome Dude. Thanks.
hokie93 07-01-08, 12:00 PM Nice pics! Put some in the screen shot thread.
fishfeet 07-15-08, 11:06 AM what are you using for your screen?
PeteReynolds 07-17-08, 06:20 PM Hey Bob,
Those pictures look great! Do you have your pj ceiling mounted? If so, what mount did you use? Just wondering, as I am looking to mount my HC1500.
Pete
terminatorbob 07-17-08, 08:07 PM I bought the screen from a guy on ebay. His screen name is shoppingdeals. He can custom make any size you need. He was very good to work with. He answered all my questions. Plus his price are quite good IMO. He is using one of my pics as a picture in his ads. Here is the item number to one of his screens currently for sale. 230270445516
I am using a monoprice mount. Though I can not recommend it. Its a piece of crap. It very difficult to get it adjusted properly and will not stay in one place.

the camera makes the black levels look better than they actually are. Don't expect miracles in that department.
Harry Muscle 07-24-08, 11:33 AM May I ask which input (HDMI, VGA, Component, etc.) you are using?
Thanks,
Harry

I have the same mount, it is a pain to ajust and make it stay no matter how tight the screws are. Once it is set, you really cant beat $16 or expect much from it.

Yeah I guess for $16 it not bad if your on a budget. But perhaps you have had more luck with yours then I have. I currently have it bungied at different places just to try and make it project where it needs to. I hate it.
That reminds me, I just got Gears of War back from a friend today that I let borrow it. I have yet to play it on my new projector, time to lock and load!

Beware GOW is very dark, had to up my brightness and contrast to play it.
In fact setting 2 is my GOW setting. Only game I need it for so far

What about the quality of the screen? I just purchased an HC1500, have no interest in DIY and want to keep my cost on a first screen down. This guy seems to fit all the criteria, shipping is even cheap.
I'd love to hear any/everything you have to say about the screen.

bob,
how high are ur ceilings? and how high is your screen off the ground? Thanks!
terminatorbob 07-25-08, 01:59 PM bob,
how high are ur ceilings? and how high is your screen off the ground? Thanks!
My ceilings are 8ft, I can't seem to find my tape measure at the moment to give you an accurate measurement on the screen height, but just guessing I would say between 3-4 ft from the floor. The screen is actually mounted on top of a window. If you look at the first picture you can see that it is sitting on the little platform at the bottom of the window. So the height would be just a few inches higher from where the bottom of a window would be in a house. If there is a standard for that.
The blacks are a little too black, it's too sharp and the colors a little too ...well colorful. I can see why you're disappointed so I'll take it off your hands for you so you don't have to throw it into a landfill as it's not biodegradable.

Did you do any adjustments since the calculator says that you need 17.9" from the projector? I have followed the calculator to the tee and the image is wonderful, i just would like to raise my screen a lil bit, but didnt want to mess with the settings too much.
Thanks for the response.

Disappointed? Not at all. I do wish I had went 1080P but thats about it. As I said above though the camera makes it look a bit better than it actually does. At least when your talking black level.

I have the zoom set almost as wide as it will go. Not ideal. But I wanted the biggest picture possible. Thats the only thing I have adjusted. I have not had to use keystone at all. My throw distance is around 11-12ft, if I remember correctly.
Im at work right now. But if I can find my tape measure tonight, I will post some more specific numbers later tonight.

Bob,
Not to be a pest, but just in case you missed my question from earlier in the thread. Thanks in advance!
antwon412 07-26-08, 11:30 AM HOW FAR DO YOU SIT FROM THE SCREEN?
I SIT 14' FROM WHERE I PLAN TO PUT A pj AND AM WONDERING IF I CAN EXPECT THE SAME AS WHAT YOU HAVE.
whoops, caps lock
terminatorbob 07-26-08, 05:55 PM Bob,
Not to be a pest, but just in case you missed my question from earlier in the thread. Thanks in advance!
Oh sorry about that.
The screen is pretty good quality in my opinion. But keep in mind, this is my first projector as well. I have no idea what the quality of other screens are. But for the price I don't think you can beat it. Im very happy with the picture it produces. If you order from him give him about 3 weeks or so to build it for you.
It was really easy to set up. The screen is easy to stretch but is much easier with two people (one to pull and the other to tighten.)

I sit about 9ft from my 100" screen. I think its about right to my eyes. But you can see some SDE which is only really noticeable in bright scenes in movies or games. At 14' I don't think you would see any individual pixels except perhaps for in certain extreme conditions.
neokeelo 07-28-08, 04:52 AM I just bought a used HC1500 and am looking to build my own screen. If I wanted to build one like yours can it be done for under $100? the main thing I am wanting to make sure I have when I build it is quality white material and blackout material. Is material with a 1.0 Gain ok?
nytheaternoob 07-28-08, 11:04 AM mask those gray bars with velvet on 2.35:1 movies and be prepared to be amazed.

I believe he was being sarcastic. He wants your pj.:D
whiskey > work 07-28-08, 06:59 PM some really great screenshots you got there. I really need a blu ray player. Upconverting dvd player i use sucks, I know full well what I'm missing. Love this PJ by the way and got in on the deal
terminatorbob 07-28-08, 08:02 PM I wish I had waited a month so I could have gotten in on all the good deals going on with this projector at the moment. But you never know.
I need to take some more screen shots. I have tweaked the picture a bit more since ive taken the last pictures.
nytheaternoob 07-28-08, 08:44 PM if you masked your gray bars

terminatorbob 07-29-08, 01:37 PM so how do I mask them with velvet? How do I make it stick up there with out hurting the screen? velcro on the sides?
Ripchord 07-29-08, 06:39 PM Man! that looks great.
I really want one,but shy on funds right now...So just gonna stick out a while longer with my IN X3;)

Search for Do-Able. 100" screen for very little fuss and very impressive for the price.
Two sheets of 8'x4' Do-Able board (one to make the edging mask) with some black velvet cloth and industrial strength velcro and you have pretty much have what this guy is showing on...

Well, mine is made of some kinda cloth material not a board. But yes i had been reading bit about the DIY options before I purchased. I was just to lazy to do it. Seems people are getting some amazing results though.:)

I don't notice any judder.
42Plasmaman 12-03-08, 02:48 PM Now that you've had this screen for several months, any complaints/issues ?
Any screen waves appeared ?
Also, I noticed in the your first pic I see a reflection. So, the cloth seems to be reflective ?

While your question wasn't pointed at me, I have this same screen and just assembled it over the weekend. Take my views with a grain of salt, as this is my first projector and screen, so I have no base for comparison. I haven't done any critical viewing on it yet (still arranging the room) but in viewing my projector's splash screen, I like it.;)
Assembly wasn't too bad, although it appears there's a few pinches where the material wasn't cut exactly correct, so I'll be pulling it down before long to trim and repull. Also, the frame construction is not the sturdiest. Through the "set it up, find wrinkle, lay it down and repull" process, the screws holding in the brackets at the "T" (where the middle support meets the top/bottom) completely pulled out on me. This was in spite of my best efforts to move it around "with equal pressure". I'd guess the pilot holes weren't drilled out precisely.
That being said, I don't regret the purchase at all, so far at least. I knew there would be compromises to trade for the very low price and in my opinion (thus far, at least) these tradeoffs balance themselves out.
Also, the fabric work on the frame was excellent

Thanks for your feedback.
1.
Did it take the 2 weeks indicated on the item to receive ?
2.
Since the frame is made of wood, how heavy is the frame?
Will it require some toggle bolts to hold it in place?
3.
What size did you get?
Thanks for your feedback.

1. Shipping was right on time.
2.Not very heavy, weight wise, I would've felt very confident with screws into 2 studs, however I did 4 to help combat sagging. Toggle bolts? If you can't find a stud, yeah, I'd suggest it.
3. 110"
ShagnWagon 12-04-08, 02:49 PM Looks good. I have a suggestion for your front wall. I went to W&$$mart and bought some king size bed sheets in a dark brown color (though you could use any other color obviously) and made curtains for my media room. You can either pin them to the wall or hang them from curtain rods (which is what I did). It works great and looks great and it's cheap. I think I got each sheet for $8 and I needed two to span an 11 foot by 8 foot wall.
