I own a Samsung hpt-5064 50" plasma, Samsung dvd-ar650 dvr, Samsung bd-p1500 bluray player, and a Sony STR-K990 receiver. I would like to upgrade my factory Sony cube speakers. I would like floor-standing speakers
and a new center channel speaker. Do you guys have any recommendations? I'm very happy with my Sony receiver and subwoofer.

The problem is that the amp in the Sony receiver is pretty mediocre. The specs, such as they are, suggest that it is a wimp as a full-range amp. That will limit your speaker choices to those that are very sensitive. I would look for speakers at about 90dB@1m/1w or better.

Pretty big space and not the most powerful receiver. I assume that budget also includes the center.
Here are a few choices on the low end:

Purchase the matching centers from the same series.
In your situation, you might also want to listen to some horn loaded speakers. They will give maximum sensitivity for the money. They can smack you upside the head so I would suggest a very thorough listen before you buy. Some hate them, some love them. Pick this pair of bookshelves up from best buy to demo at home:

You may decide you like them so much, you'll keep them rather than go with the floorstanders. If you like the horn sound, but really want a floorstander, I would then suggest giving these a try and pick up the matching center. They won't sound exactly the same as the Klipsch, obviously, since they are a different speaker, but they are about the only floorstanding horn that I know of in your price range.

Klipsch would be a good start they are efficient and affordable.

What about a sub, do you have a decent sub? Having a decent sub will help your receiver a ton by taking that low frequency load off of it and placing it on the subwoofer, freeing up the receiver's "mediocre" power to supply the mid's and high's with enough juice. The Klipsch might be a good option as they are very efficient speakers.

He's planning to keep the sub from the original HTIB.
