View Full Version : Is there such a thing as a quiet DLP unit?
Osamede 07-01-08, 11:45 AM Thinking ahead to my next projector, I was thinking to stay DLP, but would like something that is actually quiet. I dont mean that grudging "Well, I dont notice it once the lights go out" that I hear over and over about a lot of DLP units, but an actually quiet unit, like well under 25db at full lamp power?
Marc Rumsey 07-01-08, 12:03 PM LED-based DLP might be your answer, though this remains to be seen. Potentially, this could be as quiet as a TV set.
clehner 07-01-08, 12:19 PM The Planars (PD8130 and PD8150) are VERY quiet.
Will Binegar 07-01-08, 01:31 PM Triple chips don't have color wheels, but they do have fans. I don't hear my C3X-e which sits maybe 4-5 feet directly above my head. Of course my ears have a few miles on them...
Jason Turk 07-01-08, 02:31 PM Not all DLP's are loud. In fact generally they are quite quiet. I suppose it depends on what your definition of quiet is.

As said, under 25 db of audible noise at full power.
BenQ make a quiet 1080p DLP as well-
25/23 dB (Normal/Economic mode)
Randy Ta 07-02-08, 06:52 PM I went to a demo of the Planar 8150 yesterday and with my head about 2 ft from the projector, I didn't hear any noise coming from it. Was really impressed.
frank456 07-02-08, 07:05 PM 25 decibels and under is a 'quiet' projector.

I consider my VP-15S1 and my S3 before it has loud on Normal lamp mode. Hopefully on Marantz next projector they can implement the quiet technology that Planar and BenQ have stumbled onto in regards to fan noise. Besides that the Marantz for me is a brilliant DLP.

Might open up your options to more projectors and be cheaper replacing lamps than buying a more expensive projector just because another one is too loud in high lamp mode.

Georgeb 07-03-08, 10:52 AM My BenQ W10000 is very quiet in full power and even quieter in eco mode. It is on a high rack about 3 feet behind my seat and I really have to try hard to hear it, even in quiet scenes.
Osamede 07-03-08, 11:52 AM So what quality DLP 1080p units are a legit 25db and under in whisper mode. Its all about specifics...
Jason Turk 07-03-08, 02:16 PM I missed the 25db...that is really really quiet. Not too man that will fit the bill. Tell me, what are you basing that number on?
D_B_0673 07-03-08, 04:28 PM All projectors need to be in a hush box
Then they are quiet and the room is cool if you duct the heat out to an adjoining room also

The noise level (or lack therof) that I would like to achieve.
The Sharps are pretty loud - the Benqs are quieter even in high bulb mode.
