Am I the only one who notices the relatively loud Tivo HD fan? My extremely silent HTPC (and my other components) are so much quieter than the Tivo. Of course, 99% of people would not care...but for the enthusiasts its just not good enough (i.e. this forum). I am wondering if a simple fan swap might do the the trick? Anyone else experimented or noticed this?

I have two older DirecTivos that have insanely loud and annoying fans. A solution would be nice. I see that 9th Tee has replacement fans but I fear they won't be any better than the originals.

I can't hear my fan from 8 ft. away. Is it well ventilated? If so and you bought locally, you might think about exchanging it.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the fan. Its probably the fact that I have a very echoey place where all of the components and computers are nearly silent by design. Most poeple would probably never notice it..but I am not most people.

I had this problem with both my TiVo and my Toshiba HD player. (I agree that most would probably not care, but then they wouldn't be here reading & writing about it ...!;)) I thought it was just the consequence of using small, hi-RPM fans, but I decided to pop open the HD player to check it out. While these small fans are inherently noisy, what I discovered is that they are mounted directly against the back of the case, causing a loud resonance the was greatly mitigated by using small rubber o-rings to set them off slightly from the metal case. While this helped a a lot, I think a larger, lower-RPM, and higher quality fan would help even more. I think I'll do that next.

Now if I could quiet that noisy hard drive....

Thanks for the tip, that is a good suggestion. Unfortunately, I cannot get the Tivo to work properly (cablecard issues). About 15 phone calls to the cable co. and to Tivo, multiple visits...I am done.

As far as your hard disk goes, have you tried silentpcreview.com? Have you turned on acoustic management? That helps a lot. I have a "green" hd by wd with acoustic management turned on...mounted on rubber o-rings that came with my Omaura case. It is nearly inaudible from about 1-2 ft. With general background noise, I cannot notice it. In fact, I have not even heard it on since I did the original acoustic testing in a totally silent environment(which never happens in real life)
