What projector do you have?

I threw Gears of War on my Marantz VP8600 the other day, and while dark, there was still plenty of detail, and a friend and I were able to play fine.

Unfortunately, never having gamed on a projector before, I'm going to have to find a way to fight off the motion sickness of gaming 12' away from a 106" screen! :p

On dark games such as this you might have to lower your ambient light in the room to it's absolute lowest levels.

I have played Gears on both an Infocus 7210 and Mits HD1000 and the brightness levels were plenty fine. I prefer to runt he projectors in higher power mode in Gears since it can be a little dim. Another thing to keep in mind is that the Mits and Infocus are both 1000+ lumen projectors.

As far as the motion sickness goes, you'll get used to it. At least, I did.

Isn't there a setting in the gears menu to increase the brightness?

I believe there is a setting for brightness. I have never played with it though.

It's a dark game to begin with. I can see how it could easily be too dark on a PJ without optomal conditions. Try turning the brightness up in-game.

I have my Epson 720 set to run in a brighter mode whenever I play a PS3 game. I find basically all PS3 games on the dim side even with well controled light. I do not find the same issue with Blu Ray disks played ion the PS3 only games.

I don't think this is necissarily a projector issue. I rember having to turn the brighness up on my CRT RPTV for playstion games that had a lot of dark areas too.

I change the projector settings for different games. I have played Gears on both HC5000 and VW60 both are average brightness projector. The default projector setting looked a little dark.

You have a relatively dim projector, you could try lowering ambient light, buying a grey screen like the ones Elite makes or buying a higher brightness screen (links to Elite material below) you could build your own, or several and use them for different situations. You can get 100" screen material of varying types for just over $100 from our forum sponsor below.

You can set the video black level in the Display menu of the Xbox dashboard.
It can be set to something like Standard, Extended, etc. It raises, or lowers, the black level base. Makes a big difference in lightening things up.

You may have to test the settings and find the best combination between in game brightness, xbox (intermediate/expanded) and projector. Alternatively you can consider a higher gain screen.

You may want to test different gamma settings instead of switching to high brightness. If you are playing in the dark excessively with very high brightness, it exacerbates RBE and viewing fatigue.

I thought this was only in effect when viewing standard def. material but could be wrong...will check tonight.
