I've got a problem with my Samsung DLP RP-HDTV in that my analog inputs (composite, s-video, and coax) are hosed (image has diagonal lines across it regardless of the source, cable, or analog input used) and the repair folks with Samsung's technical support help can't fix the problem (already replaced the video board, the whole light engine assembly, and the analog board). We've given up trying to milk anything else new out of the warranty company for this repair so we've decided to live with it. Our component (480i & HD) inputs and DVI input work fine (good as new with the whole new light engine).

The problem that creates is that I have video inputs that are only in analog form (i.e., composite, s-video, or coax) and I can't view them (w/o the multitude of diagonal lines that is) on this TV now or in the future. So what I'm looking for is a converter/adapter that will take a composite and/or s-video and/or RF input and give me a component (480i) output that I can connect to the component in ports that work on this TV.

So far, the only thing I've found is quite pricey, so I'm hoping one of you can give me tip toward a cheaper alternative. This is the only unit I've found so far:

Thanks in advance.

Honestly, $139 is a steal. The only other suggestion I could add would be an entech (bought by monster) CVSI-1, but I only know of 1 other board member who has one.

I might be tempted to part with mine, but not for <$200. The CVSI-1 is a legend. =)

Good luck--at least now you have a new unit to google for!

I agree....$139 to do what you want is dirt cheap. You could opt for a Video Processor, but then you going to spend a boatload more.

Actually, after someone reminded me that I have a VGA port on my Sammy DLP, I found the following items that might do for me what I need and all but one at a more reasonable price:

For <$40 you might want to gamble with it, but my suspicion is that none of those options are going to look very good. I'd love to be proved wrong though. Make sure to pop back and tell us how it went if you opt for one of the above...

Pricing on a lot of this stuff isn't much tied to cost of production, it is just supply and demand market forces or guesses. Back in very early 2004 I bought an HDCP compliant DVI switch and a fully automatic component video and digital auto switch. The DVI switch was over $200 and the component switch was just under $200. Those items go for half that cost today because there is still a good stock of them, but little demand given the popularity of HDMI.

I suspect that anything with an NTSC converter included is steadily dropping in price as we approach the DTV transition date.

Interesting timing on this thread. I just received this little unit from svideo.com yesterday to convert a composite video cablebox to component for distribution thru my extron matrix switch. I previously was using a spare PC with a capture card, a radeon vid card with component video output, and DScaler to perform this duty. That PC started dying a few weeks ago, so I had a decision to make. I've been in a "downsize" mode when it comes to PCs, so I decided to give this box a shot.

It works great. Its VERY small and the picture output is just fine. The source is just standard def digital cable, so its not great to begin with, but compared to the previous setup, its perfectly acceptable. $139 was a steal....

Is the component output 480i or 480p. It turns out that any 480i input to my TV, even via component, has a major problem. However, 480p component through the same component port works just fine.

I'm almost certain it's outputting 480i, but I'll double check tonite.
