I want to add a 360 for another media extender along with my PS3.

What to look for? I'm going for CHEAP...won't play many games, if at all.

I can live with component if there is no big deal about it.

How cheap can I get one for? Are all the red ring units under warranty?

I can get a red ring unit right now for $75...I just have to send it in if its still covered.

Thanks

As long as the seal is intact you should be able to get it warrantied. If it were me and I was buying one locally I would call MS first with the serial # and see if they will send you the warranty return box before you buy it. I have paid $100-$150 for complete, under warranty RRoD systems in the past.

I'd wait another week til the price drops on the pro so then you can push for a lower price.

Media extender use doesn't need the HDD so you might want to wait for the price drop to see how low the Arcade goes and how low it pushes used boxes.

I have a Premium without HDMI would like to sell, just dont use it anymore.

I'd use it as a media extender but it does not seem to play mpg from my WHS server?

WHS is...trying...I'm running Server 2003 with Twonky as a service.

I've had no real luck or anywhere near the performance level with WHS/WM11 as I do with Twonky or TVversity.

I had high hopes for WHS but no real luck. The PS3 makes a fantastic media extender however it will not display, for some odd reason, a certain variant of WMV in the VC1 3.1 container, part of the reason of looking at a 360.

My only reason for going with a HDMI unit would be the HDMI switch I have for our TV in the bedroom.

I sent you a PM.

Think I got a good deal.

Gamestop of all places has a HDMI 360 for $219 + $60 for the HD.

This was comparable to prices I saw on Craig's without HDMI. HDMI units were way over 279.

Struggling with streaming though...see why it won't see my MP4's off of Twonky.

I hate to think I'm going to have to go with WMS.

You saved $20 over buying a brand new unit with controller, harddrive, full warraty, etc. Doesn't seem like a great deal to me.

Where are the units with HD's and HDMI for 299?

It may be going back regardless....if I can get transcoding to work for the format that the PS3 does not support I might go that route instead.

Price drops next weekend on the 20gig units. Buy now if you want and just get a price adjustment next week.

The main key to buying used, is just to make sure the console hasn't been tampered with. That it's shell hasn't been opened for any reason, and that all the security tags haven't been messed with. Alot of 360's on craigslist have been modded, and they have some kind of issue with them, and then the guy wants to dump the problem onto somebody else, so that's basically what you really have to watch out for.

And actually, it's almost more logical to buy a used xbox 360 that CURRENTLY has the 3 red lights and needs to be fixed. Reason why, is because when you do get it back, it comes with a NEW 1 Year warranty that covers "EVERYTHING", not just the three red lights issue. So, if you do end up buying a used 360 that is supposedly in good working order, and it doesn't have the 3 red lights or anything like that, you better hope that it isn't more than 6 or 7 months old, so you still have 6 or 5 months left of the original 1 year warranty that covers everything.

That's why I think it's better just to buy a 3RROD 360 that hasn't been tampered with. You get them for hardly anything, it only takes about a month to get them fixed, and no out of pocket expense to get them fixed. Just transfer the warranty in your name, have them send out the coffin, put that puppy in there, and immediately ship it out. Before you know it, three weeks will have passed and you'll have a little yellow notice on your door from UPS that says they tried to deliver a package to you, but you weren't home and you need to sign for it.

IMO, buying a used 360 is not a good idea. The first revision of the hardware is total crap, from Samsung DVD-ROMs that die en masse to, well.. you know.

Buying new is the only way to go.

I had luck with craigslist but its a buyer beware. I researched SKU #'s, and lot #'s and figured out how long the warranty was etc. With a price drop in effect next week for 299.99 for the PRO, Gamestop will have to lower its used systems.
