View Full Version : 87% of PlayStation 3 owners watching Blu-ray movies? Survey says yes
http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/04/87-of-playstation-3-owners-watching-blu-ray-movies-survey-says/
Buried under predictions that 2012 will bring dominance for Blu-ray over DVD and breaking news that the PS3 just may have had a hand in winning the format war the Entertainment Merchant's Association 2008 Annual Report on the Home Entertainment Industry holds survey results showing 87% of PS3 owners reported they watch Blu-ray movies on their console. That's a stark contrast to last year's NPD survey indicating 60% of owners didn't even know it played them. We don't know what's behind the jump, be it better marketing/consumer education, or something wrong with how one the surveys were conducted. You can mull that one over during the fast money round while also peeping results that say 22% of HDTV owners think they're watching HD programming, but in fact are not -- not like we haven't heard that before.
Corellianrogue 07-05-08, 12:31 PM If that's true wouldn't it mean that Blu-Ray has probably the worst attach rate in history? Lol!
vancouver 07-05-08, 01:14 PM i dont believe those numbers.

So you're saying that if around 11 million PS3s are being used as Blu-Ray players (plus however many standalone players and PC drives there are now) and 15 million Blu-Rays have been sold in total so far (that's the last number I heard anyway) then that wouldn't be a low attach rate? And do you believe the 87% number? Encouraging HDM doesn't mean worshipping only Blu-Ray and believing any positive BS about it.
bjmarchini 07-05-08, 01:53 PM Yep, that explain the 9 million US Bluray sales. About 1 for each SA player and game unit.
I love surveys. You could use a survey to declare the world is flat if you went to the right place in the world.
Keep drinking the koolaid.
I would bet that 87% of PS3 owners don't even have it hooked up to an HDTV. Probably only 50-70% at most.
Hmm.
Hard to believe that 60% of PS3 owners don't know that it plays Blu-ray,
Easier to believe that 87% watch BR, that's not to say they buy BR.
Awareness of BR has certainly risen since HD DVD went away and I for one, believe that the majority of PS3s sold since then are used for movies.
I don't have a hard time with the 22% who think that HDTV hardware means HDTV content. 18 months ago it was probably twice that.

Is anyone forgetting that this is primarily a gaming system first and player second for mainstream J6P?

Sony maybe? ;)

The other 30%+ probably have them connected to PC monitors that are capable of high resolution.:)
I also want to mention that blu-ray rentals at Hollywood Videos in my area have increased. about 3/4 of their 150+ movies are usually checked out.
Especially the new releases.
Target, Wal-mart and my local Fred Meyers have all increased their blu-ray disc selections as well. Not menitoning that blu-ray players are poping up everywhere.
I enjoy blu-ray and am glad to see it spreading like a northern California wild fire.
Glad the PS3 can help spread the need for blu-ray high def.

I will argue this one to the end. The PS2 was primarily a gaming system. The PS3 is not. Sony doesn't think the way you mentioned, consumers now through understanding what the PS3 can do certainly don't think that way either.
Lee Stewart 07-05-08, 02:54 PM 69% of PlayStation 3 users, 33% of Wii players and 57% of Xbox 360 gamers watch films on their consoles, with 44% of PS3 owners also using it to watch Blu-ray discs.
The survey by Amsterdam-based Forrester Research found the PC was still the most popular video gaming platform, used by 60% of respondents versus 33% on game consoles, 27% on mobile phones, and 20% on Game Boys and other handheld devices. Only 28% claimed not to play games.

They surveyed gamers, not all PS3 owners. The article starts out by saying "Video gamers...
Two different surveys with two different results. One aimed at PS3 owners and the other aimed at gamers.
phansson 07-05-08, 03:47 PM Video gamers are increasingly using their consoles to watch movies, according to new research: About 69% of PlayStation 3 users, 33% of Wii players and 57% of Xbox 360 gamers watch films on their consoles, with 44% of PS3 owners also using it to watch Blu-ray discs.
This must be a very reputable source since the Wii can't play ANY movies at all.
So how can 33% use it for movie playback.
Where do you find these articles????? Do you write them?

You are confusing this with your favorite forum on br.com. Here we discuss and debate, and it is OK to question. Look at all the threads that question Bose and Monster products...oh, and how many times did you "encourage" HD DVD when you posted in those threads? News flash dude: the war is over, quit making posts like that.
As for this "Survey", look at the real numbers. There is a little over 1 BR movie per PS3 sold in the US. Take away all the stand-alones and all of you who claim to have 200+ BDs, and you are left with an appalling attach rate.
..or this is just propaganda or people had no clue what they were answering. I think it is a little of both. Strangle if the survey is true it would be very bad nes for Blu-ray. It means that no one is buying movies (they are either renting or sharing).

Shows what you know about the Wii. You can stream movies to it just like you can to the PS3 with the Flash video format (FLV). Not many are doing it, but it is very possible.

I guess I don't know as much as you (how could I) but I have never seen a movie played on the Wii.

They play all kinds of multi-media, and some people even use them for games too.!:D

 No, actually I don't know that. I thought this was a forum for discussion. There are industry and fanboy forums for self promotion.

There is currently a thread about the new HD video format for red-laser DVD. I bet you won't see JBlacklow saying encouraging things about it though, even though it is HDM.
btw, it is very amusing that the "news" came via "PS3 Fanboy". I think that says it all. I said in the other thread that the BDA may be vary worried about this new DVD HD video format, and so it is going in to high gear with the propaganda stories touting how well Blu is doing without stating the real numbers.
The most common response I get when I talk to someone who has or just got a PS3 is that it is great for games, BUT it plays BD's too. This is why many are buying a PS3, for BD and this includes gamers. They know it does BD and DVD's and they are buying it for more than just gaming.
JBlacklow 07-05-08, 05:20 PM Posting Rules For The HD Disc Areas Effective 11/9/07 - Updated 11/10/07
AVS Forum is first and foremost the place for help and support of our home theater gear. It never was intended to be a place where a "war" is fought over a new format. In fact the site is known as the place for early adopters to talk about new gear and coming technology.
In keeping with the spirit of what the site is about, we are going to set some ground rules when using the sections of the site that can easily become an issue place between members. You may not like it, you may think we are not allowing some information when we should, thats fine, you have a right to your thoughts. However please understand, we choose what we think is best for this site. Posting here is not a given right and you are free to find other places with less restrictions.
So along these lines, we feel the following information does not have a need to be on this site and will be removed as reported or seen.
Number of player units sold.
Number of disc titles and format types sold.
(Now restricted as it seems people do not even agree where the numbers come from.)
"X is winning" type posts.
"I support X so deal with it."
No Trolling or posting just inciting others.
Accusing of someone of being a paid shill. (If you have proof, show us.)
Posting of information that can not be verified but is stated as fact. (Proof?)
Attacking another site for their thoughts on the subject.
Attacking other members of the press or media.
Promoting other sites.
No petitions posts.
No "Buy Days" to support going out to purchase on a certain day.
As always, no hacking chat.http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/announcement.php?f=114&a=117
Fantastic. I point out the forum's major rules and mission, and I get personal attacks.
:(
whitestang06 07-05-08, 05:21 PM No telling how many people have a PS3 hooked up to an old tube SDTV. So, there wouldn't really be much of a point to them watching BDs on it.

A statistic showing a certain percentage of people using their PS3s to watch blu-rays doesn't indicate blu-ray sales. A majority of people rent more often than buy. Unless you get the breakdown of all of that, you're merely speculating. Any way you swing the numbers, Blu-ray is rising steadily and quickly.

Yeah, I just bought a few Blu-Rays in a buy 2 get 1 free sale so seeing as Blu-Ray sales aren't exactly huge that must have caused a quick rise, lol!:p
