Hello my name is.....
First I’d like to thank everyone else who responded to my other thread. I’ve decided to go with a mixed use room. Like everyone else I have been reading a ton and learning, but I have a few questions about my own build.
First the obligatory background, I am planning on adding a bonus room above our garage. This will be fairly extensive as we will be raising the roof to add a second floor. I will still retain a small attic for HVAC and running wires etc. I have a roughly 27’ x 24’ space to play with.
Room Elements
1) Home theater- I expect this to be used 70% TV, 20% movies and 10% games. Given the 16 foot wall I’ve chosen for the screen I’d like to go with around 100” screen. Primary seating position is likely to be about 10'
2) Pub games- Pool Table, pinball, darts
3) Small bar with seating (I’ve looked through some of the other build threads and I like the bar seating where you can face into the bar or sit on the other side of the counter and face the screen.
The main purpose of the room is, of course , entertainment, but we’d like to be able to integrate the screen for parties and such.
Current plan
1) Sound isolation- Double drywall +- green glue, Insulation in all walls. I plan to have the framer bid out both staggered and regular studs.
2) Lighting- I am thinking of three independent zones with canned lighting. One each for the bar, pool table and theater with remote lighting control.
3) Video- Projector and screen(TBD). I plan to use a motorized screen due to the presence of small children, sources will be Tivo HD, XBMC for streaming DVD’s, PS3
4) Audio- Trying to decide if I want 5.1 or 7.1 I’m going to use the 5.1 electronics that I have right now B&K ref 20 with separate 5 channel 120 watt carver amp. I also have HSU sub I’d like to use BUT… We would like to go with in-wall speakers (I plan to demo some in a couple of weeks) so I’m not sure if it would be better to go that route for the sub as well. Currently my music collection is ripped as FLAC which I stream using a sonos for whole house audio. I plan to add a separate zone for this area. With a couple of ceiling speakers
5) Seating- The wife doesn’t like theater chairs so we will be going with a couches. Additionally, we plan to have built in benches along the long sides of the room for added seating as well as storage (it also makes running wires for the inevitable upgrade easier). Other seating will be the bar and if there is room a card/game table.
6) Future proofing- 3” conduit to be run behind the screen wall as well as in 1-2 spots on each wall
Questions
1) Ambient light- I couldn’t get the wife to go for windowless since you can see the building from the street. I have been given the go to blackout the windows (currently we are looking at two but that hasn’t been settled). How much light can I shut out and what’s the best way to go about it? If I keep the theater area dark and the back areas lit a projection system be watchable for entertaining purposes?
2) Canned Lighting- How many cans and what size will I need to cover the area?
3) How quiet? Three of the four walls and the floor do not connect to living area. The remaining wall is buffered from the living area by the bathroom. I understand that part of isolating is blocking outside sounds from coming in but is the double drywall not enough or overkill. How much does the green glue ad?
4) HAVC- One of my friends recently went with a ductless HVAC system (daikin) and he loves it but his house is less than a year old. The idea intrigues me, but does anyone have experience with these systems particularly reliability?
The good news is that we have plenty of time to get the plan in order since we don’t want to peel the roof of the garage until after hurricane season. I’m working on some sketch up drawings and will post them later (assuming I can get all the furniture on the floor:rolleyes:). I've attached the basic floor plan.
Thanks to everyone already for all those other great posts that taught me so much.
