i don't like the sound of high priced bulbs and frequent changes(1k hours?)

but i have an opportunity and would like to know if it is worth it.

also i have an anamorphic lens. will it play nice with the ruby?

Personally, for around $2k I would be buying a brand-new VW40 from Sony if you wanted an SXRD projector. I think there were enough advances from the VW100 to the VW40 to make the latter a much better projector.

I would also avoid the used ruby at $2K .

Yes, the bulb costs on the Ruby are completely insane. Overall ownership costs would skyrocket. If I owned one, I wouldn't be able to watch the thing without seeing dollar signs float out the window.

But I am a cheapskate. Your attitude might be different. ;-)

I'd go with a different projector with lower operating costs.

Bah, I think this whole bulb-replacement thing is a big, fat red-herring! Sure, there are folks on this forum who have been unlucky, so their voice 'drowns out' all of the other people who have had no problems.

I owned a Ruby for almost 2 years and was extremely happy with it. Got to about 1,400 hours and the bulb was still going strong. Replacement cost is a little steep, although you can quite easily get a new assembly for quite a bit less than MSRP. Part of the reason for this cost is that this projector (along with the VW200, which I now own) uses a much better bulb that the VW40/50/60 - much better color fidelity performance IMO and a smoother look.

If the used PJ has been well cared for and the bulb is still south of 750 hours then I think it is worth the price.

The Ruby works perfectly with after-market anamorphic lenses. Use the panamorph HE lens myself, and no blurring or color fringing at all!

I'd get a Ruby if someone gave it to me.
I wouldn't spend a red cent on it.

I wouldn't spend a penny on one, save your money and buy a SONY VPL-VW60 or a VPL-VW40. Newer technology, fair lamp replacement price, excellent sharp picture, etc...

Yeah $2k is an okay price, but I would suspect you'll need a new lamp soon. That will now make the price more like $3k. Seeing as there are now pros to some of the newer models, I would not recommend it.

The thread title reminds me of the trip my wife and I took to Thailand, especially Bangkok. :)
