View Full Version : Samsung UP5000 Problem - 00x000000ff error on all BD discs after upgrading to v1.3

I've had a major problem when upgrading to v1.3 yesterday. No BDs will play after installing 1.3. All kick out with error 0x000000ff or try to load at the splash screen until i get impatient and reboot the player. So far the only BD to load is Fifth Element (Original Release) but it will not play smoothly, extreme jitters. DVD and HD-DVD play just fine. Build is 2007.12. Purchased yesterday, Circuit City Open Box. All discs loaded/played fine before firmware upgrade (not sure what original version was).

BDs that won't play:
Pirates of the Caribbean
Pirates of the Caribbean 2
Pirates of the Caribbean 3
300
Casino Royale
Live Free Or Die Hard
Memento
T2
Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
The Fountain

I tried burning the disc twice, both times with Sony CD-R discs, once with a free iso burning program, the second with Nero 8 Demo, both times throttled down to 4x. I've tried loading from both discs multiple times. Every time the process goes through with no problems but still, BD playback is broken. I upgraded my BDP1000 every single time with no problems at all. I'll talk with Samsung tech support tonight, but I'd like to avoid sending it in. That said, I'd rather send it in than return it since I got a screaming deal and I don't think there are any more in the area.

I had the same problem. Mine was a refurb and I talked to Sammy CS and they said it was bad. I had to send mine back to the place I bought it but you'll be ok since yours is new you can send it to Sammy themselves. I don't know the turn around time but I think people were getting theirs back fairly quick iirc.

An couple of examples from another thread.

You could try re-installing or it or try downgrading.

You could try removing the power plug for about 10 mins. Computers like that sometimes. Then reapply the update.

Have tried that along with a "cold reset" reccomended by Samsung Tier 1 tech support. They suggested I call back during the week for Tier 2. I'm guessing I'll end up having to send this in for repair or replacement.

ever since i bricked my system copying the firmware myself, ive asked for the firmware discs from sammy, and both 1.2 and 1.3 went through smoothly. Maybe try that b4 you send it in. Sending it in, in my experience, sucks. It doesnt go directly to Sammy, its just some company they out source to fix their problems, and they hold onto the player forever b4 they do anything to it - i was out 3 months when i sent it in...

if your close to your warranty then def send it in, but if u hav time to wait for a firmware disc directly from them maybe its worth a shot -

How long does a firmware disc take?

I tried doing firmware update over ethernet but couldn't get it to connect using DHCP. Maybe the Tier 2 tech can walk me through getting the ethernet working and updating that way will get things working. If not, I'll try getting a disc through the mail before sending it in, but it will surprise me if this is just a disc burning issue since I've done 4 or more updates on my BDP1000 the exact same way with not problems.

Yea...you sound rather competent in the image burning department. If the player isn't able to connect via DHCP (it should be a matter of plug and play, as long as your router is set to DHCP mode and is apportioning out IPs to your individual computer(s)), you could possibly have an ethernet port problem as well...or the update is corrupt.

Does BD playback return when re-installing 1.2 or older firmware?

Also, if you can go into the setup and system information and inform us what is listed, that might be helpful.

.

it can take anywher from 2-10 days - they tell u 14 days to be safe, but ive gotten it as fast as 2 days.

I agree with vinnie that you seem very competent in copying the firmware to disc, I on the other hand was not (but I actually had a tech at work do it for me and the first time it just didnt read correctly)

i just dont want you to have to go through what i did, 3 months w/o the player and several calls to first tier reps who do not know anything about the product...

I haven't been able to find an older firmware to install. This is my first update on the UP5000, my previous experience was with a BDP1000. Is there somewhere I can download 1.2 to see if it fixes things?

Thanks,

Got the 0x000000ff message when trying to load "Ironman" ...my first BR disc...called Samsung and was informed that a new patch release will be coming at the end of october to fix the problem. They asked me try some other Blue ray disc, but haven't got the chance to.

That's BS. Either the particular disc is defective or the player is bunk (the latter is more likely). I would find another disc quickly so you can escalate the problem with Samsung and have your unit repaired (hopefully).

I tried the new "Indiana Jones" BR film and it spat out my disc...I'm planning to call them again. Thanks.

I agree with Vinnie's suggestion. Remember you only have 90 days for free support. After that you have to pay $85 flat-fee for any repairment.

OTOH, this is the first time I saw Samsung publically gave out the firmware update date !! Hope this is true though.

Bought a refurb from Best Buy, it plays regular DVDs and HD-DVDs fine but the only Blu-Ray disc that seems to work is "Black Hawk Down".

I've tried maybe 20 other Blu-Ray discs and they either just pop out with an error or they take 10 minutes to load then stutter so much the movie is unwatchable ("Iron Man"!).

Sammy CS told me to wait for another firmware update at some unspecified time. The guy really did not like it when I quoted from this thread to show that others were having the same problem. Also he said that this unit has one laser that is used for all three formats - does that sound right to you all?

I really don't want some other Blu-Ray player, I have way more HD-DVDs and I am beginning to think the extra PQ is not worth it anyway. I just hate having several discs I can't play...:(

For future reference, never reference this forum in your dealings with Samsung CSRs (low level tiers anyway), they think it's filled with Samsung miscreants and otherwise clueless imbeciles. :D

And yes, I believe the laser is the same...it's the optical pickup units for HD DVD versus Blu-ray that are unique from one another.

If you are unable to play as many as 20+ Blu-rays, I would get a little more demanding with them, explaining to them that this is unacceptable, forthcoming firmware fix notwithstanding.

I was actually talking to a level 2 person, but they reacted pretty quickly to my mentioning this forum.

Ah...figures. Honestly, they should be thankful there's a repository where actual repeatable bugs can be identified and not piss on their customer lifeline. Nobody's crying wolf here and the bug lists are not amended until they can be verified across more than 1 (preferably at least 3) user.

I spoken with the Samsung CS and they asked me to reset the player and that eventhough the 5000 player did not acknowledge an update was available...My unit should be allowing me to update it to a new version. She said a update disc will be sent out in a few days.
