Does anyone know of a place that sells Velodyne's SMS-1 refurbished, used, or just very cheap? I know about audiogon and ebay. Neither have them very often.

I don't think you'll find one new for less than $599, although One Call does offer them with free shipping so they'd probably be the best bet new. If you can swing $599 just be patient because they pop up from time to time for around $400. For what it's worth it's still an excellent value at $599 so if you have a tough room it may be $600 well spent.

Also check out Videogon, Audiogon's sister site and AV123 and Emotiva's sites as they have classifieds as well.

The SMS-1 sure was a huge help in taming the bass in my square 12x12x7 room. I had some dips and peaks that placement just wouldn't fix at my listening position, that the SMS-1 got ironed out in short order. The auto EQ feature isn't that hot, but the manual EQ got me an almost perfectly flat response.

Retail price is $749, I've never seen one cheaper than $599 online. Velodyne has a tight control on authorized resellers, and if you buy it from a non-authorized source, and experience a hardware problem, you're stuck. Outlaw Audio sells them at $599, I believe it's the lowest quotable authorized dealer price.
