View Full Version : Truth or fiction: Wireless controller causes testicular cancer- JonDotCom 07-11-08, 03:49 PM Comments?:p dubyahJay 07-11-08, 04:03 PM Fiction Every day you are bombarded with a full spectrum of radiation. From the microwave range through visible light and down through radio. Your cellphone outputs a higher level of energy than you controller does. Even the most highpower (unlicensed) 802.11wireless networking products are limited to 1 watt EIRP (including the antenna). For reference, most radio transmitters reach into the Kilowatt range. (I work for a wireless communications manufacturer) mboojigga 07-11-08, 04:06 PM ^^^ YEAH!!! What Jigga said. dubyahJay 07-11-08, 04:14 PM :) sperron 07-11-08, 04:15 PM It's not just power but also proximity. If you are concerned about it, just don't lay the controller directly on your junk. jason10mm 07-11-08, 04:24 PM If anything it is the HEAT from keeping your crotch covered up. Typical gamer position keeps the genitals confinded and possibly overheated (more from hands covering them and legspropped up, not heat from the controller itself). Increased temp has been linked to increased testicular cancer rate. But really, testicular cancer is a disease with a peak in young men. Who are also gamers. True, true, and unrelated if you ask me. dubyahJay 07-11-08, 04:28 PM It's not just power but also proximity. If you are concerned about it, just don't lay the controller directly on your junk. A very valid point. I would be extremely surprised if the controller output anything more than about 70mw of power. In fact, I could bring one to work and check it out on a spectrum analyzer. That would be interesting. Degenerazn 07-11-08, 04:33 PM Anything above the visible light spectrum will not be harmful (400nm and up) meaning microwaves, radiowaves, infrared, and up to the color Blue will not be harmful (can't penetrate skin). Below 400nm is where you get your UV rays, X-rays, gamma, and cosmic. Might wanna stay away from the latter 3. hezagenius 07-11-08, 04:36 PM It's not just power but also proximity. Then how are you supposed to move both L and R while simultaneously pressing Y? dubyahJay 07-11-08, 04:40 PM Then how are you supposed to move both L and R while simultaneously pressing Y? Nose :D Malcolm_B 07-11-08, 05:03 PM The only way you can lose your balls playing video games is if you actually turn it off when your wife/girlfriend tells you to! :D assasyn 07-11-08, 05:25 PM I'd be more worried about your cell phone in your pocket and your laptop on your lap. deveng 07-11-08, 05:30 PM As other have mentioned, heat raises the risk for cancer. Thus sitting on the couch all day, with limited motion will be the risk factor (Cyclists for example have a high risk because of the tight fitting bike pants, and continuous friction between the legs causing heat). whiskey > work 07-11-08, 05:34 PM this is why I wear a condom at all times. Maximum protection Davio 07-11-08, 05:35 PM This is the craziest thread Ive read in awhile. While cancer of any kind is no joking matter, I dont think anyone has to worry about their controller causing it unless they live their lives with the controller taped to their potato sack. assasyn 07-11-08, 05:42 PM This is the craziest thread Ive read in awhile. There is no way to tell for sure. Some side effects don't show up for 30 years. FIVE ONE SIX 07-11-08, 07:01 PM I'd be more worried about your cell phone in your pocket and your laptop on your lap. actually, you're not the first person i've heard say that, and i completely agree with you. and i'm not even talking about cancer, i'm talking about ED... assasyn 07-11-08, 07:18 PM Who is ED? deveng 07-11-08, 10:32 PM Who is ED? :D:D FIVE ONE SIX 07-11-08, 11:43 PM Who is ED? LMAO! erectile dysfunction... Mike LS 07-12-08, 08:53 AM It's not just power but also proximity. If you are concerned about it, just don't lay the controller directly on your junk. I don't have to worry about my junk being confined since I usually game with no pants, but I've gotten too used to using myself as a monopod for my controller....don't know if I can use the above advice after all these years of a supported controller. Good vibrations....... superklye 07-12-08, 11:38 AM What doesn't cause cancer these days? joey791 07-12-08, 12:48 PM Hell move to Louisiana, just breathing the air here causes cancer:( assasyn 07-12-08, 01:01 PM Hell move to Louisiana, just breathing the air here causes cancer:( True that son. I was in Sulphur last week. The whole parish smells like a fart. A bad one too. whiskey > work 07-12-08, 01:12 PM I don't have to worry about my junk being confined since I usually game with no pants, but I've gotten too used to using myself as a monopod for my controller....don't know if I can use the above advice after all these years of a supported controller. Mike LS 07-13-08, 04:07 PM How can I start a petition that the proper term be changed over to "sack cancer"? So much easier to say? ebackhus 07-13-08, 04:29 PM Or nut rot. joey791 07-13-08, 07:44 PM True that son. I was in Sulphur last week. The whole parish smells like a fart. A bad one too. I'm in Lake Charles working out of town this week, I'll be working in a plant though as soon as you cross the bridge into Sulphur chiliDog 07-15-08, 02:52 PM bump... this thread is to funny to let die so soon ROFLMAO "who is ED?" 9000rpm 03-28-09, 08:40 PM The latest research shows teenagers have a 520% increase in brain cancer likelihood if they begin using cellphones before 20 years old. A friend of mine volunteers at a Palliative or End-of-Life Care hospice. A large percentage of the dying are young people from brain cancer. A doctor at the facility says it's because of cellphone use. There's no question about this anymore. Regarding wireless controllers causing cancer, true, they are lower powered than a cellphone. But the research also indicts low powered cordless phones. And it's also a matter of length of exposure. Sometimes I play Rock Band for 90 minutes straight, with the guitar controller pressed flat against my stomach. That's way longer than I would ever spend on a phone. And the stomach/crotch doesn't have the thick shield of skull bone the brain does. Personally, I believe the day will come when we will say what were we thinking? flood222 03-28-09, 08:46 PM I hope it kills sperm. Daye 03-29-09, 06:07 AM im buying all wired controllers and throwing away the wireless ones right now veyladrone 03-29-09, 10:06 AM Have fun in Lake Charles:) I was so happy when my family moved from Sulphur, LA. Unfortunately we moved from an area that smells like sewage due to the sulphur plants around to Walker, an area that smells like sewage because of.... well, the sewage  flood222 03-29-09, 11:03 AM 802.11wireless networking products are limited to 1 watt EIRP (including the antenna). There has been no link found yet in regards to radio waves and cancer. Of course that doesn't mean they wont. I am writing this on a laptop using a wireless connection and my cell phone is in my pocket. Hopefully there isn't a link. Otherwise I am going to be screwed. Cooking a hamburger on a grill has more carcinogens than your wireless controller or the powerlines that run above our heads. Going outside in the sun has more possibilies of causing cancer too. Fight cancer, play xbox in a dark basement while eating a tray full of broccoli and carrots! Sundull 03-29-09, 01:48 PM I believe they do this for interference reasons not to prevent t3h canc3rz. The guy who says this won't let his wife get a bluetooth hands free device. They don't play video games. I don't buy any of this personally. Bluetooth is just a wireless protocol and I believe it's safe. mproper 03-29-09, 03:05 PM The latest research shows teenagers have a 520% increase in brain cancer likelihood if they begin using cellphones before 20 years old. It's amazing this doctor your friend knows has somehow discovered what millions of dollars in research grants and studies have not been able to prove. Amazing! Definitely no question about it anymore and I have thrown all my wireless devices in the garbage and have wrapped myself in two rolls of foil. I think I will withhold judgement....no offense to your unnamed friend or unnamed facility or unnamed doctor or unnamed possibly-but-probably-not published study. And yes, I did try to google "cell phone 520% increase in brain cancer" and various iterations before resorting to my sarcastic post. joey791 03-29-09, 09:38 PM Have fun in Lake Charles:) I was so happy when my family moved from Sulphur, LA. I now have two members: the original one and a larger cream and green one that features a flashing circular light on the top and rumblerama. Its a bit off putting in the dark but the missus thinks its true next generation gaming. Xyst 03-31-09, 01:37 PM I had some copper cage lined skivvies made up a few years ago to keep the boys safe. Not only that, it prevents the government from reading my crotch's thoughts. mproper 03-31-09, 01:44 PM I don't feel the need for any further protection. I have been married for 11 years, thus my crotch hasn't been used for the last nine anyways. |
