Hey folks!

I have a combo wireless/wired linksys router in my office and have my brand new D* HR-21 in my living room. I can't run a ethernet cable between the two because of restraints from being a slab house. So my question is, what kind of a linksys or other device should i use to hook into the back of the HR-21 so that i can transmit wireless internet to it and receive Video on Demand. Please if anyone knows and can send links or a model # that would be awesome. I really dont want to spend $400 on a media type router or anything but i didnt know if there was a wireless media connect card with an ethernet adapter on it that could log onto the internet on the router just like a laptop would to the network. Thanks for any help!

What you need to get is a wireless base station with WDS (if your current unit supports WDS), or a "gaming adapter". Such a device will allow you to extend your wired network via wireless - I use an Airport Express in WDS mode to extend my home office network to my living room for my PS2, 360 and TiVo. What model of Linksys router device have you got? WDS is the standard, so if it supports WDS, I would say that's your best bet. You might need to upgrade it to the latest firmware to support WDS; unfortunately, without a model number, I can't say anything for sure.

Are you sure that an internet connection connected to your D* unit will support all the features you are looking for? If not sure check with D*.
If yes you could use a pair of Powerline adaptesr to extend a ethernetr line from router/switch to your Living /room

Thanks for the help guys. I have a Linksys WRT54G Version 5 Router. Will that work with the gaming adapter?

Thanks.

Looks like according to Linksys' site, WDS is not supported (or at least it's not mentioned there or on the Wikipedia page), but Linksys recommends this device (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1115416826619&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=2661943298B01) for use with their base stations. That or the powerline Ethernet adapters mentioned by walford should get you going.

I just hooked my HR21 to the internet last night. Was a breeze. Here is what I did:

Ordered LICWGA54GRM-WB-R -- Linksys WGA54G Wireless-G 54Mbps Gaming Adapter from geeks.com (is refurb) for $39.95. Have also seen them at TigerDirect for roughly the same price. With freight total was $48.89.

Hooked Linksys to a laptop and ran install CD. Went to Advanced settings and picked static IP address and subnet mask.

On the HR21 I also went to advanced network settings, matched up info.

Plugged Linksys into HR21, told it to connect and it finished in under 3 minutes.

Wanted to see what the Video On Demand service looked like but didn't want to spend a lot to do it.

You can use some of the older LinkSys wireless routers by flashing the firmware. Do a google search for WRT54G and firmware and you will locate tons of info.

Happy with this solution but the jury is still out on the VOD service . . .

hey guys, I am extremely desperate here. Justin, I saw you have a smilar etup to mine, so if you can help, great, but really this is directed at anyone who is willing to take some time to help me. Linksys tech support was a joke both times I talked to them, and directv's team leader has yet to call me after 3 days (i was told he'd call me within 2). Anyway, I am about ready to pull my hair out. Someone please humor me and help out a newbie at all this. I have a Linksys WRT54GS Wireless G Router. I am trying to hook up a new Linksys WGA54G Version 2 Wireless Gaming Adapter. The gaming adapter works with my wireless system until I hook it up to my HR20-100 and try and connect the network to it; the second I do that, the wireless adapter seems to stop working. On the HR20, when it tries to detect the wireless adapter and the internet, it says ok on everything (ip, gateway, even network), but it says internet not found. I've gone through two of these adapters now with the same problem. Does somehting in my setup page for the adapter need changed or added to make the HR20 compatible? Something with my wireless router? Or does something in the advanced setup page of the HR20 itself? Here's some more advanced info-I pinged the the ip address for the HR20 (192.161.1.102), and it received 5 out of 5 packets. But when I ping the wireless gaming adapter while hooked up to the HR20, it times out. Does that make any sense? How could that be? I was not able to run the disc included with the adapter; will not work with my system for some reason. Linksys had me do setup manually. Someone please help! Thanks for your time!
