View Full Version : What does it take to create a 106" RP setup equal to the perfromance of a boxed RPTV?

Back at the end of 1999 we built an 8' deep projection cabinet with a Draper dual first surface mirror array firing at the rear of a 106" 16:9 Draper screen. We fed it at that time with a Sony VW10HT realizing projection tech was on the edge of big leaps and bounds in improvement. Right at 9 years later I think the changes have been dramatic but upon consultation with several pros I am still left with the thread title as the question. They say it cant be done but cant seem to explain exactly why.

With all this tech built in why cant I create a similar compelling image on the 106" screen as can be seen on say Samsung 50" RPTV? I am thinking its a light output issue but I am not sure.

Thanks

All it takes is a healthy checkbook and the right components.

Look at Stewart Filmscreen for rear projection setups. Look at Digital Projection, Sim2, or other powerful 3 chip DLP and you will be blown away.

Thanks for the reply Fletch but what is it specifically in terms of performance that makes one more viable on the larger screen? Is it light output? We will be looking for full 1080p in terms of resolution.

it can be done...and better than the box tv.

All it takes is the right projector and screen

He was satisfied with a Sony VW10HT, so it should be easy to improve upon. Did see a HD1 stack rearpro, the screen probably was a bit larger, but not much. However this was demoed by JVC in a fairly well lit exhibition hall, and plenty bright (I like bright displays, 1000 or more rulez;-), although this probably was much? less), so if looking for 1080, give one of those a try.

If you already have the rear projection setup, it should be as easy as replacing your old projector with one that can match its throw. Don't know why they would say it won't be as high quality.

I agree with Tryg. A good RPTV projection setup will kill most self contained RPTV's...but you will pay for it, both monetarily and physical space in your house.

Basically just about any good projector can be made to outperform an RPTV of similar size, especially with the proper screen setup.

Thanks for the replies. Yes the rear projection set up is already in place. The plan was to simply swap to a higher quality projector as the technology progressed. We were never really satisfied with the VW10HT. The image was never really what you would call sharp(I think for several reasons some the fault of the projector some the way the signal was handled) and the light output was low and color saturation fairly weak.

Like I said if we could get a similar image to a Samsung 50" RPTV on the 106" screen Id be plenty satisfied I think. Better would be excellent. The current image with the VW10HT is not even close.

I still would like to know which variable of the projector is the biggest problem and therefore what I should be focusing on in the new projector. We are considering a JVC 1080p D-ILA projector at this point.

good choice. Also the rear projection screen matereal will play a big role in how "sharp" the image looks. Overall just upgrading the projector will be a significant improvment.

If you get into an RS2 (or RS1X even) I can pretty much guarantee that it will kill what you had before, and about any RPTV's out there.

What's the difference between the RS1 and RS1X? Overhere there wasn't an updated model for the HD1.

Edit: read some of the rs1x thread, so new motherboard, software, and HDMI 1.3. Did JVC upgrade the HD1 aswell?

No. Just the RS1.

The RS1X is HDMI 1.3, has the gamma control, and I think 1 or 2 other things. It is the new verison (the U is no longer available).
