View Full Version : Who had the best E3 showing? keebler87 07-15-08, 07:12 PM Who do you think? Try to hold back your inner fanboy and answer truthfully joeblow 07-15-08, 07:34 PM This is a Playstation forum, not a system wars forum. keebler87 07-15-08, 07:48 PM And in that same vein you can still participate in the poll. I'm not looking to start more internet squabble, I'm just curious who everyone thought had the best content and why they liked it. MarkH 07-15-08, 07:54 PM I voted M$. And I own all 3 current gen consoles. IeraseU 07-15-08, 08:48 PM First of all I own all 3 systems, as you can see from my signature. Overall as I stated in another thread, the loss of FFXIII as an exclusive was such a monstrous blow that it was basically almost impossible to recover from. I will say that had the loss of FFXIII as an exclusive not occurred, then I would have voted Sony. Of course it did occur so there is not much point to proceeding further along this line of thinking. I thought Nintendo had the worst possible showing at E3, and they really alienated themselves from their 'hardcore and even moderate gamer' audience. Slacker George 07-15-08, 09:19 PM I'm not sure this is such a good idea even if your intentions are good, but I voted. None of them were exactly amazing but Microsoft put on the best show. bplewis24 07-15-08, 09:58 PM I'm not voting because I don't pay attention much to other websites that promote the other consoles. I basically only click on PS3 news. However while it seems like Sony had a damn good E3, Microsoft had the single biggest show-stopper in getting FFXIII on their console. If they had a solid showing other than that then it's possible they topped Sony's conference. I think one thing we can all agree on is Nintendo's was about as disappointing as their console is. Brandon The_Dark_Knight 07-15-08, 10:16 PM I only own the PS3 and PSP and I have to say that Microsoft won it this time around. Slacker George 07-15-08, 10:29 PM We're talking about the big 3 press conferences right? That's what I meant anyway. There's a lot I haven't watched yet and E3 isn't even over. Davio 07-15-08, 10:32 PM MS had a great show IMO, and I dont think its done yet. Bungie still has some strange countdown going on and Im crossing my finger its another Halo IP of some kind. That would simply leave the competition in the dust at this years show. I dont own a Wii, but their show just seemed pretty typical. I was really pretty disappointed with Sony's show. Ive really gotten more into the PS3 this year and have high hopes for Resistance 2 and Killzone 2, but other than that there wasnt too much to get excited over. TyrantII 07-15-08, 10:49 PM I'd have to say MS from what I've heard so far. Still it's disturbing they seem to be using their monster capital advantage to buy up everything under the sun that has to do with gaming. In the end, us gamers, both xbox and ps3 fans, will lose. The competition forces them to work harder and put out better features and find better IP's. Oh, btw, was there any word on TM:ps3? number1laing 07-15-08, 10:49 PM I don't think any of the 3 had a particularly great conference... aside from MS with their FFXIII announcement. At least Sony and Microsoft gave me reasons to be interested in their hardware, games, and services moving forward. Nintendo's conference was just... laughably bad. They showed almost nothing, and what they did show was pretty awful. Bokchoy 07-15-08, 11:17 PM I'd say Microsoft > Sony > Nintendo. BTW, why do people think that mentioning the fact that they own more than one system automatically gives them more credibility and makes their opinion 100% bias free? How many consoles we own is irrelevant to any of this. bplewis24 07-15-08, 11:23 PM I'd have to say MS from what I've heard so far. Still it's disturbing they seem to be using their monster capital advantage to buy up everything under the sun that has to do with gaming. It's really not good news for gamers as these types of things are going to lessen the quality of the games themselves. It's still reassuring knowing how many great games are here and coming for the PS3. No press conference can take away it's superiority as a gaming platform. Brandon bplewis24 07-15-08, 11:24 PM BTW, why do people think that mentioning the fact that they own more than one system automatically gives them more credibility and makes their opinion 100% bias free? How many consoles we own is irrelevant to any of this. I've commented on this before...but to keep it short I'll just say I agree with you :) Brandon maximuslcd 07-16-08, 08:37 AM I didnt watch enough or any for that matter of the conf to make a honest vote...losing FF to 360 was a big blow to sony though. no vote here TomInCanada 07-16-08, 08:45 AM I didnt watch enough or any for that matter of the conf to make a honest vote...losing FF to 360 was a big blow to sony though. no vote here Doesn't seem as big a deal to me as it does to others here... GTA4 is still a great game despite being on multiple platforms... TonyDP 07-16-08, 12:44 PM I think MS and Sony were pretty close as both showed some interesting games. I'd go with MS by a nose as they just seemed to have more concrete release dates for their games and once again their online offerings seemed more polished. Nintendo on the other hand had easily the worst showing, their first party content catering almost exclusively to the "casual gamer". Clone Wars looked interesting and the 1:1 motion mapping add-on had me curious (although the Wii should have had it from day one) but overall, very very disappointing. I own all three consoles as well and based on their E3 presentations both the 360 and PS3 will be getting significant usage; but at this rate I probably won't be firing up the Wii for months. Daekwan 07-16-08, 01:07 PM I'd say Microsoft > Sony > Nintendo. BTW, why do people think that mentioning the fact that they own more than one system automatically gives them more credibility and makes their opinion 100% bias free? How many consoles we own is irrelevant to any of this. Three things. (and yes I do own all 3 consoles) 1) Owning all 3 consoles makes you ABSOLUTELY relevant to ALL of this. Because if you dont own a certain console. Then how much would you truly actually care about the manufacters E3 conference. You have no investment in that console or the manufacters future. Why should you even care what they are doing. Chances are even if you did see them doing something on that console that you were interested, you would prefer it was done on the console you owned also. Because that would save you from spending another $300+ on another videogame console. 2) Owning all 3 consoles doesnt make 100% bias free. Its foolish to believe that. But what it does make you, is 100% credible to your experience with all 3. Because you own all 3, you can use and compare features of each and draw an honest conclusion of which one works the best in your opinion. Someone who doesnt own all 3 systems, and doesnt bother to even try what the competition has to offer is forming an opinion with little credibility. Because they have nothing to compare their experience with. Credibility means you know what the hell you are talking about. You know because you have hands on experience with it. You arent just pulling comments and concerns out your azz. 3) Owning anything should form a biased opinion. If you spent money to buy it, you SHOULD be a fan of it. And you should have a preference for using it. All of those things said, its just human nature to prefer what you have spent your hard earned money on. Why even bother to buy something just to hate it. Thats just stupid. Not only stupid but its wasting money. But do NOT confuse that with buying something, and owning something else you like more. Meaning yes I have product A and B.. yes I like product A and B.. but YES.. I like product A more than I do B. Just because I like product A more.. doesnt mean I should dislike or hate product B. A good analogy is that right now I currently own two vehicles. A Japanese luxury car and a American SUV. Right now I am clearly biased to the Japanese car becaues it gets better gas milage.. and is easier/cheaper to drive and park. But that doesnt make me automatically hate my American SUV. Because when its time to pull my trailer full of motorcycles, or haul 6 people around, or the weather is bad and the ground covered in snow. Then the SUV is the savior. But because I own both vehicles allows me to be more credible in my judgment of the strengths and weaknesses of both. I can be 100% credible when I speak about Japanese luxury cars and American SUV's. To return to the subject. Owning all 3 consoles allows me to accomplish 3 distinct things. The 360 - is the most used and provides me the greatest overall entertainment. All of my online friends use XboxLIVE. And I use it for almost everything I do in my "digital" living room. I used it daily, I prefer it and I am clearly biased towards it. The PS3 - feels the most futuristic. It allows me to play PS exclusives I've come to love over the years. (Hot Shots Golf, Gran Turismo, etc). And its the only console that will play Bluray movies. So it does have its use. The Wii - is the center of the living room whenever I have a party, kids or women that I date visit my home. Its priceless when shared with company. Its much more fun than a board game, and everybody wants to play with it when they come over.. even myself. Anybody who's a fan of videogames and A/V gear.. and has a decent amount of discretionary income to spend on this hobby.. should definitely give all 3 consoles a try. You really do get to see the strengths and weakenesses of each console, and will discover each does indeed deliver greatly when used in its specified role. Owning all 3 consoles only makes you MORE of a winner as a videogame/audiovideo fan. boblinds 07-16-08, 01:09 PM I thought that MS had the best show. And, for the record, it's the 360 is the only one of the consoles I don't own. iamkoza 07-16-08, 01:13 PM where's the none button? i woulda voted that briankmonkey 07-16-08, 01:22 PM where's the none button? i woulda voted that Seriously.. All three presentations were pretty weak.. I'm glad to see some better info has arisen after the main presentations. Gorgeous Killzone 2 multiplayer footage, Infamous, etc. So far Sony has shown the most impressive gaming contect. I don't really care for low quality netflix downloads but for those that do, they may view it differently. Sony's got their own downloads as well, same thing.. Nintendo has been a huge dissappointment so far for me with MS closer to the PS3 for what has been shown so far. Still though, overall E3 havesn't been very impressive as a whole. Where is Tekken 6, Gradius 6 (announced before PS3's launch), Timesplitter 3 (though after Haze I'm wondering if Timesplitters 3 will remain the pinnacle), Zelda, Mario, F-Zero, Freed Fighters 2, Black.. Uncharted 2!! Hopefully we'll see some great stuff today as well. number1laing 07-16-08, 01:25 PM TimeSplitters 3 came out on the Xbox/PS2/GameCube dude. I still don't understand the bitching about Zelda and Mario... There was a Zelda released in 2006 and a Zelda released in 2007. There was a Mario released in 2007. Why do people want Zelda to become Tony Hawk? briankmonkey 07-16-08, 01:26 PM TimeSplitters 3 came out on the Xbox/PS2/GameCube dude. good catch TimeSplitters 4.. bgarner 07-16-08, 01:44 PM Three things. Owning all 3 consoles only makes you MORE of a winner as a videogame/audiovideo fan. As a person that owns all 3, I would have to agree with you 100%, with the exception that my order of preferred systems are: 1. PS3 2. Nintendo Wii 3. XBox360 I would never give up any of them but for my needs, the order above works best. I don't play as much online due to time, so while the 360 online capabilities are great, I never use it, and when I do, I probably spend more time tying to find a good group that isn't invested with kids swearing or having background conversations, etc... Not a negativde against 360, just my experience. We watch a lot of Blu-Ray and since we have more PS3's in the house, it makes scene for us to buy games for the PS3 when they are released on multi-platform. We have 3 kids under 12 so the Nintendo Wii gets used, a lot, and when we have parties, nothing beats it. I guess this shows that everyone's experiences are different but in the end, I would never trade any of my systems. Oh, and back on topic, I think MS had a better E3 as they were able to shock everyone with the Final Fantasy thing. There was nothing shocking about Sony or Nintendo's conference. so's your face 07-16-08, 02:13 PM i voted MS. they showed a lot of stuff and even the cross platform games they showed had demos. the thing that really bugs me about them though is how bloody effing arrogant their spokemen seem to be. shane kim is a pompous a-hole no matter how you spin it. even worse than peter moore. Dungwader 07-16-08, 02:18 PM Microsoft had the biggest "Wow" moment with the FFXIII announcement but other than that the presentation kind of bored me. Sony listed more games that I am actually interested in but who knows how long it will be before they are actually out. Nintendo didn't mention a single thing to excite me. All in all I think MS and Sony kind of tied and Nintendo didn't announce anything I am looking forward to. In reality none of them really hit it out of the park. Martez 07-16-08, 02:32 PM I voted Microsoft because they actually had some kind of big bombshell announcement, and they actually had people playing the games they were showing on the stage. IIRC, the only game at the Sony conference that was played on stage was LittleBigPlanet, and Nintendo....well, even as a big fan of Nintendo I felt embarrassed watching the Wii Music presentation at the end. Wow. cuco33 07-16-08, 02:37 PM This is a Playstation forum, not a system wars forum. +1 but to be on topic: 1. MS had it better 2. E3 isn't just about the consoles... you guys know that game developers also make press conferences too right? bplewis24 07-16-08, 02:37 PM Three things. (and yes I do own all 3 consoles) ...But what it does make you, is 100% credible to your experience with all 3. Because you own all 3, you can use and compare features of each and draw an honest conclusion of which one works the best in your opinion. I have to disagree with this. In theory...and ideally, that should be the case. But it is not the norm at all. People's perceptions are often colored by bias and subjectivity. Many people even often own products that they resent owning (yes this dips into your #3 point), and use their ownership as a free reign to bash the product that they dislike or didn't want to purchase in the first place. In short, owning a product does not in and of itself make a person 100% credible as to their experiences. The credibility comes from the person's reputation and the merits of their argument (backed up by some sort of objective facts or logic). Brandon Daekwan 07-16-08, 03:17 PM If you have $400+ to waste on a console.. **ONLY** to hate it and bash it.. The you really, really, really... need to get a life. (and now that I think about it.. go to church.. and schedule some visits with a psychologists.. and probably hug your mom.. because something is seriously lacking in your adult life) tqlla 07-16-08, 03:34 PM IMO, the company that gets talked about the most wins. In this case, it would be MSFT, and the Square announcement. RafaelSmith 07-16-08, 03:45 PM IMO Microsoft came out the "winner" in this years E3...mostly because they got to go first I think. I mean the live demo of Resistence 2 would have been much more impressive if it had not come on the heals of Gears 2...Frankly, I think the visuals looks better in GW2 than R2 and both demos showed a BIG BADDIE. I could care less about FF...and have for over a decade now ...but that one announcement pretty much kicked PS3 where it hurts. Not only that but they actually showed playable demo's of several big multi-platform titles like Fallout 3 and RE5. I am still up in the air about the whole new facelift for XBL. One of things Ive liked about XBL is its simple and easy to use...But I am looking forward to being able to put games on the HDD. I hope I can skip/avoid the whole avatar thing entirely. The Sony presentation was the best in terms of style but they just didnt show anything that made you go WOW....course in and of itself neither did MS...its just they got to go first so they defined what WOW equals this year. Nintendo....easily the lamest and most disappointing presentation of them all. Its one thing to appeal to the casual/families its another to be simply silly. That whole demo of Wii Music was just that silly. Throwing a virtual frisbee for a vitual dog? Ok, the sword fighting on the beach looked kinda fun and cool. No Mario related announcements, No Zelda, No Metroid, blah blah...an E3 w/o any mention of your biggest IPs seems kinda odd to me. The impression I got from Nintendo is one of arrogance...having been involved in the video game hobby now for several "generations"...that type of arrogance is what has gotten them and others in trouble in the past...just my 2cents. My XBOX 360 is happy...My PS3 is sad...My girlfriends Wii is ...cute. =P Actually the big winner this year is probably Square Enix....the amount of $$$ they will take in from FF from having it on both consoles is gotta be putting smiles on their faces. bplewis24 07-16-08, 03:50 PM If you have $400+ to waste on a console.. **ONLY** to hate it and bash it.. Well, this is AVS. Some guys have lots of money on here  And it's more prevalent than one would think. Brandon TyrantII 07-16-08, 03:52 PM IMO, the company that gets talked about the most wins. In this case, it would be MSFT, and the Square announcement. Well if that's the case, they came in 2nd, as most of the major vid sites are saying how Sony edged them out this year. Frankly I was disappointed in them all. Slacker George 07-16-08, 03:53 PM In the case of the PS3 though some people will gladly buy it just for Blu-Ray movies and bash the gaming side of things. RafaelSmith 07-16-08, 03:59 PM Personally the biggest issue I had with Sony's presentation was not the lack of big reveals...but the fact that a good portion of their presentation sounded like an "apology" to share holders. Trying to explain that the PS3 not doing so well in its first year (at least in terms of gaming) is ok by talking about the history of PS1 -> PS2 seems a little half baked to me and honestly...I wanted to hear about what is coming to my PS3 not what happened 8 years ago. bplewis24 07-16-08, 06:25 PM In the case of the PS3 though some people will gladly buy it just for Blu-Ray movies and bash the gaming side of things. Right. That has happened a lot. Brandon ppshooky 07-16-08, 06:43 PM I'm going to say that the 3rd party developers won E3. MS listed cross platform games as the majority of the stuff coming out on their system. Sony, for the most part, didn't show off anything new (it was more like a progress report then anything). And Nintendo is milking their cash cow games (Wii Sport Resort?). Guinn3sS 07-16-08, 06:53 PM Seriously... who cares about trying to determine who "won" the E3 conference. No one will ever be a "winner". Each side will always argue against the other side and no one will convince anyone. bplewis24 07-17-08, 10:53 AM For those that thought nobody had a good showing, what were you expecting to see? What could've produced a good/great showing from MS/Sony/Nintendo? Brandon Stangs55 07-17-08, 12:44 PM Well if that's the case, they came in 2nd, as most of the major vid sites are saying how Sony edged them out this year. Frankly I was disappointed in them all.
