So okay, I'm in the process of setting up a home theater set-up and I've been reading all the stuff on REON video processing vs. the older Faroudja chip for scaling so.... What happens if you don't have a reciever at all?

If you play normal 480i DVD's on a PS3, do they get upscaled by the PS3? What about de-interlacing?

And if that's the case, why do we need a receiver to upscale for us? (or is it only for things such as cable TV, Wii, etc.)?

All this stuff is so confusing to me (being a total Home Theater noob)... I have a PS3 right now and am waiting on my TV to come in this saturday.. Have HDMI cables ready as well.. but I am waiting on choosing a receiver right now as I am totally confused with all the upscaling/deinterlacing talk and want the best picture possible (especially since lots of movies and tv shows haven't gone blu-ray and are still standard DVD)..

Thanks

Yes, the PS3 will upscale.
You don't need a receiver for it.

The PS3 will do the upscaling as long as the PS3 is connected to the tv via an hdmi cable. Without an HDMI cable, the transmission is no longer HDCP compliant and will be sent at 480p.

Interesting.. So why all the hub-bub regarding what video processing chip receivers use for upscaling? It seems like a lot of people even bypass the video processing in receivers?...

So is the upscaling on receivers important for like.. devices which will not scale by themselves? Such as cable boxes and (as far as I know) a Wii?

Because not all upscalers are created equal.

If you have a really good receiver probably $800+ it MAY be better scaler than the ps3. 1200+ you're almost garanteed a more powerful chip.

The real questions is will your eyes tell the difference ;)
