For that kind of budget, I've heard nothing but good things about Aperion Audio.

In your price range (I'm assuming you want 5.1?):
Intimus 4B Harmony SD (http://www.aperionaudio.com/product/Intimus-4B-Harmony-SD,116,35,265.aspx)
Then you'd have apx. $321 for a receiver. I'd check online (craigslist, ebay, etc.) for a receiver in that price range that you like.
The Aperion speakers have a 30 day in home trial where you can test the speakers out for 30 days and send them back if you dislike them. Also, they have a full value trade up program if you want to upgrade any of the speakers in the future. That's pretty hard to beat!
I almost bought a set from them but I wanted floor standing towers, "thin" wall mountable speakers, and a 12" sub. I ended up with a 5.1 JBL Studio L setup for $1,847.77 incl. tax and shipping off eBay. I have yet to buy a receiver. I'm waiting to find a deal on craigslist or eBay.
If Aperion's floor standing speakers were less money, I'd have gone with them OR if I wanted all satellite speakers where mounting didn't matter, I would've gone with the Intimus 4B Harmony SD (that I recommended to you) or Intimus 5B Fusion SD for $1,559.00. I probably should've done a trial anyways, I kind of regret not doing so. I may check them out one day when I go to buy a second setup for the home.
Goodluck in your search! Your best bet is to go out and listen to as many speakers as you can and if possible at/in your own home.
Oh, and I say stay away from Bose! You can get better speakers for less! :)

Don't you need some kind of playback, too? I like the PS/3 for playback, at around $399, as it does DVD, Blu-Ray, SACD, games, and even media server playback all in one (if you use Sony's crappy media server software). There are cheaper Blu-Ray-only players, though.
i have a PS3 for the Blu ray playback. So all i need are speakers and a good HDMI reciever. Ive heard good things about the onkyos?
Those speakers look excellent but im trying to figure out when they say smaller to medium sized rooms what dimensions they are looking at. My entertainment room is about 25x30 and thats just the immediate are where youd be watching movies.
Kangaroo128 07-24-08, 02:53 PM Keep in mind that this always comes down to pure opinion and opinion only. None of us could ever hope to listen to every combination of speakers, receivers, players, wires, etc. So after being referred to several different companies, you have to pick what you like, most importantly, and just dive in. It's both terrifying and also very fun at the same time. :o
With that said, I've built myself a pretty respectable system at about the price point you are trying to hit. A couple of months ago I started research on some more "budget" minded speaker companies. I ended up with two front runners, AV123 and Axiom. In the end, I loved the look of AV123's products and I found a set of used Rocket 750's and the RSC 200 center channel for a total of around $850. Trust me when I say that it was an incredible steal of a deal that I got on those speakers.
I also recently purchased Onkyo's 805 HDMI capable receiver. I had owned a 605 before the 805 and loved it, but I wanted more power. The 805 is more mainstream and some people scoff at that, but you won't find a receiver at that price point that is more capable (feature wise) than the 805. I found mine new for around $650.
Now I know that we've already hit your $1500 limit with those choices, but you could easily save a few hundred here and there by bumping down a few levels with the speakers. I also saved some money on surrounds and a sub because I had those pieces left over from a previous system. But as I said, these were just my choices and you may be able to do much better for the same amount, though you'd be hard pressed. ;)
Just do your homework, read about a lot of different products, and have some fun with it. Good luck!
I'd look around and see if any other companies out there would let you do a free in home demo. Off-hand I don't know of any others myself, but I'm sure there's educated people on this forum that may know.
What Kangaroo said, do your homework, read about all the different products, and have fun! Good luck!
