I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone is buying:

HDDVD or BluRay

I own more HD DVDs, but I have switched to blu-ray, and that is what I usually buy now. I do miss the discussions in the HD DVD group and find it a bit sad when I "visit" there. Still, I had intended to be purple all along--I just got a push to hurry the process.

HDDVD or BluRayBlu-ray, and just a guess but between those two I think that is what most people are buying. The last time Home Media Magazine did a Blu-ray vs HD DVD percentage from Nielsen, which was for the week ending April 27 (http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/questex/hom262891WCV/index.php), the ratio was 93% Blu-ray.

Last few month I've been a rabid HD buyer trying to get my hands on every thing RED with over 176 HD and counting, I finally purchased a panny bd30 but I'll be taking my time with Blu' clues and mostly renting for now.

I have run out of HD DVDs to buy, so I am now only buying Blu and SD DVD (can't play blu in the van, kid's room, or movie theater out on my deck).

The weird thing is that the latest news from the front page of AVS says that Blu-ray is still only 3% of the disc market with DVD being the other 97%...and that is $ spent not discs sold. Since Blu cost more, that means Blu is less than 3% (maybe around 2%).

For those who missed it, in the first 6 months of 2008 DVD and Blu sold 6 billion $ of discs...but Blu was only 200 million of that (1:30 ratio).

I'm at 80 HD-DVDs and 38 Blu-rays.

All blu :D It's good to see some are buying HD DVD as I still need to dump a good amount of HD DVD's and get my POS HD-A3 fixed before selling that as well.

Still completing my HD collection. I have only one BD (2copies of "Bonnie&Clyde" that Amazon has sent/re-sent me accidentally instead of the HD version, and which I got refunded in the end).

Have not bought an HDDVD disc since last Thanksgiving - in fact, have sold off the 15 or so discs I had bought. I am buying all new interesting releases in Bluray except animated features which I still just buy in SDDVD as a concession to the kids.

I am largely not bothering to buy the Bluray versions of older catalog films as I am regularly underwhelmed by the picture improvments over SDDVD.

Other than the free HD-DVD's I've only bought two since they were not available on BD - Transformers and Serenity. I've been using my A30 mainly for upconversion, but it is so very slow dealing with DVD's so I expect that I'll dump it for another BD player before the holidays. I have well over 100 BD's in my collection now. Just ordered "A Perfect Storm" and "Top Gun" yesterday.

+1

At least Warner is giving a mix of everything. The audio may be underwhelming for the enthusiasts, but at least they're giving a decent mix of content.

Some domestic HD DVD's are cheaper than Blu-Ray rentals at B&M stores. I can rent the Blu's. Packaged HD DVD's are cheaper than blanks. Universal and Warner have already shown that their equivalent Blu-Ray's won't be much if any better. I have no desire to pay more for the same thing.

At this time, and hopefully this will change, those are the only only movies that sell on HDM. Catalog titles, comedies, drama (without explosions and CGI), Independent type films, etc, just don't sell very well. Take into account Blu only sells less than 3% of DVD and you can see why studios are reluctant to sell many titles in that format...but "science fiction, horror, or mindless action films"? Studios know they can make a good buck off those on HDM.

Also, I am sure this will change, but the poll results right now are 65:35. Same place as they were all last year!

I still buy the occasional HD-DVD that I find missing from my collection but I am red only. Still no plans for buying any BD discs or players in my future. I've a LOT of HD material I've yet to watch and right now I am kind of ho-hum about HD in general. The BD catalog holds no interest to me at all, well maybe one or two.

Since new movies only ends up on BD, they are purchased on BD.

But I do find one or two discounted HD DVDs that I buy.

So I have purchased alot of HD DVDs the last months, and not as many BDs. But as time goes by the HD purchases has gone down and the BDs has increased.

Still mostly HD-DVD. Bargains can be found left and right, unlike Blu-ray which goes on sale less often (and with the same selection of mediocre titles). In fact, I have so many more HD-DVD's and DVD's than Blu-ray's that I decided to get me one of these:

http://www.kaboodle.com/hi/img/2/0/0/ec/0/AAAAAp_tIi0AAAAAAOwCug.jpg

Toshiba Qosmio F45-AV423 15.4" Laptop (http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/toshiba-qosmio-f45-av423/4505-3121_7-32641002.html). My five-year old laptop died a few weeks ago and that gave me an excuse to upgrade my new laptop to a high-def portable player (even if the screen resolution of 1280x800, or 720p, isn't true HD) as long as I could keep the cost below a grand. Problem is there are no laptops that can play both Blu-ray and HD-DVD, only one or the other. For an entire week I was going back and forth between this Tosh laptop (with built-in HD-DVD player) and an entry-level Sony Vaio model at Circuit City that plays Blu-ray (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sony-VAIO-VGN-FZ348E-B-15-4-Widescreen-Laptop-VGNFZ348EB/sem/rpsm/oid/206399/catOid/-12963/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do). In the end I went with my heart and not my brain (which is telling me I'll be getting way more Blu-ray movies over the next few years than DVD's) because 96% of my home video collection is either DVD and/or HD-DVD right now, with a paltry 4% Blu-ray. Wish me luck! :(

I luckily made the switch last year (to Blu only) and the final decision to drop HD DVD when the Warner announcement was made. So I only buy Blu Ray. I now have 3 Blu Ray players in my house so I can play them wherever I would like. I didn't like the idea of having three formats in my house so HD DVD was the one to go out the door.

I now have 200 Blu Rays, around 400 SD DVD's and no HD DVD's (I owned around 50 at one point).

The next six months looks pretty solid as far as Blu Ray releases. Hopefully we will get the entire Indy series......:D

I am just going by the numbers on the AVS front page that said "Home entertainment spending is rolling right along with over $6 billion spent on DVD on Blu-ray discs alone (during the first 6 months of 2008)"...and "Blu-ray sales (discs) generated more than $200 million in the first half of this year".

So that is about 3.3% of DVD sales over that 6 month period (is your number for just a week?). This makes sense too, because learly last year we heard that HDM was about 1% of DVD sales and now it is over 3%...a 300% increase. Now we have to note that with DVD sales increasing at a good pace, it is more impressive that Blu-ray is making gains.

In top rankings of discs sold (100 I think but I could be wrong). When all of DVD sales are taken as a whole Blu-ray's overall market share (outside of the top tier where its day-and-date or newer releases do well) is 3%.

I've got three fully functional HD-DVD drives for my Xbox 360 and I haven't bought any HD-DVDs since they were pulled from stores. I have however already bought my first Blu-Ray since it was on sale. I won't be getting a player until the holidays though because the one I want comes out then.

I think DVD should be an option on this survey, even though it's obviously not HDM. There are a lot of people who still haven't gotten into HDM yet.

Personally, I've purchased ~30 HD-DVD's in the last month and another 10 DVD's (all used). I own zero blu-rays and plan to keep it that way, at least for now.

It has always been that people buy HD DVD over Blu-ray because it is priced lower. There may be a few rare collectors willing to pay more.

I owned one of the few copies of Alien on D-VHS. I was able to sell it for a boatload of $.

Quite the opposite actually from my experiences with Best Buy, Fry's, Amazon, Circuit City. Blu-ray's for the first year and half were more affordable on average. Only after Toshiba called it quits have HD DVD's been less expensive on average due to retailers clearance sales trying to dump inventory.

???

I bought into HD DVD because at the time players were 1/2 the price of blu and I could usually find HD DVD discs cheaper. To be fair though they were always close to the same price and only the combos were more (but I actually LOVE combos! we use them everywhere).

It wasn't until Transfomers week and the big blu BOGO sale that Blu-rays were a better deal.

Now though its not even close. I averaged under $9 a disc for HD DVD. Since you have been selling you HD DVD discs and they are all gone, I bet you bought them a while ago and you paid over $20 per disc, and since the bottom dropped on their value, you must have sold them for a lot less.

Maybe I was buying the discs you were selling!

I sold them on AVSforum classifieds and traded in quite a few at DVDplanet. I enjoyed my HD DVD's, I just personally felt that Blu Ray had more potential and better marketing. So I put my eggs in the blu basket.

I made the decision about two days before Paramount flipped to HD DVD, which kind of made me nervous.:D

Althou I have a Blu-ray player I have yet to buy a BR-DVD. Really bugs me that can only play them in the home theatre and not enjoy them in other rooms, car or other portable. So just renting via Netflix for now and buying SD-DVD.

It is pretty encouraging, though I do still find it somewhat disappointing how many people are unwilling to let go. Every dollar spent on HD DVD is a dollar not spent towards establishing Blu-ray, and the longer it takes for Blu-ray to grow, the longer it will take for us to get some really great catalog titles in HD.

Has nothing to do with letting go. It has to do with value for the dollar. I could care less about lining someones pocket (Sony or Toshiba). I care about spending my money wisely. HD DVD's give me excellent quality and sound and can be easily ripped (and burned to Blu-ray later is so desired).

That said, I've pretty much gotten all the ones I want at this point. BD is still too high a cost for me to buy into right now, so it's DVD if I really want it. While I want Blu-ray to survive (I like physical media), I'm not going to waste money on artificially inflated pricing. Content is king, not audio or video quality.

HD movie collecting is just too darn expensive!

If BD is somethig high-end and special (like laserdiscs were), then $25 is way too low, I would be willing to pay 5 times that.

The trouble is that you can now walk into every AV store, every department store, every video rental place, and even neighborhood convenience stores, and buy/rent BDs. That makes it mass market, and IMO $25 is way overpriced.

I know, I know. If I constantly check, I can catch those amazing November 2007 amazon sales, some of which lasted less than a day.

I will pick up the occasional HD DVD on clearance if it's a movie I particularly want and it's not available on Blu-ray yet, or the Blu-ray is one of Warners garbage ports where there's no difference anyways.

Otherwise I only buy Blu-rays now.

However as I have known for a few months now that I was going to be moving, I haven't bought any movies since March. I didn't need to weigh myself down with a bunch of discs I needed to put in a box and load in a U-Haul if I could avoid it.

Why isn't there a "Both" option? I'm currently buying about the same amount on both formats. (I just mean right now, not overall as I probably have over 120 HD DVDs and only about 12 Blu-Rays and even the 12 Blu-Rays were because of sales. Then again so were about 100 of the HD DVDs, lol!) Obviously I'll be buying more Blu-Rays than HD DVDs as time goes on since there are very few HD DVDs left that I want unfortunately.

Blu-ray and DVD here. DVD cuz stuff I want isn't on blu-ray (tv shows mainly) and I'm waiting for some more blu-ray sales to grow my collection. I'm having trouble resisting adding HD-DVDs to my collection since a couple of Kevin Smith films are available on HD-DVD but aside from those, I've no interest in adding to my collection.

Its a shame Serenity was never offered as a combo disc. It'd be the only HD-DVD I'd keep. (I plan on ditching my hd-dvds eventually).

I may have purchased one HD DVD after the Warner announcement. That was the writing on the wall for me. I was in the camp that thought that Warner was going to go red, exclusively. (Which rumour has it, was almost the case)

I immediately went out and bought a PS3 and went Blu. I have however, slowed my buying habits down considerably. In the last two months of 2007, I think I bought about 50 red titles. I have nearly 100 red titles which to me, is the threshold where I would not sell them off, since I also have two players. Since I switched sides, I have purchased only 29 Blu titles

I'm going to wait it out to see if the Holidays show a big Blu push. If that happens, my comfort level will likely return and I will start buying titles like there's no tomorrow...Will

While I am holding on to the few HD-DVD's that are not on Blu yet I will not be buying any more. As a dead format there will come a time when my HD-DVD player will break with no way to get it replaced. I just don't see making any additional investment in HD-DVD and I expect to sell my remaining HD-DVD's and the player this fall when everything I care about is on Blu.

After Toshiba announcement I bought two replacement HD-A3 to make sure I don't get stucked, and start buying red. Since this format died, I bought over 100 of them! Now I got all my american red titles, (129) would like to buy 3-4 import but I'm pretty much done.
I'm buying blu's now and it's pretty expensive, last week I picked 3 Blu for the same price I paid my last 10 red shipped.
I'm looking forward for The Dark Knight, Ironman & the 3rd Mummy: Tomb off the Dragon Emperor, beside those, there's no hurry I'll have sealed movie in 1 year from now I'm sure. (even if I stop buying)
