so first off I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this but here it is
I called DLP theaters in my area (Detroit, MI) and every one I called told me the content they get from the studios is only 768p vertical res whats with this - I have had 7 projectionists tell me that it is a JOKE how bad this looks since it is only 768p vertical
the projectors are Christie CP2000 projectors (at least at the emangine) that can run at 2048x1080 but they only get 768 vertical footage on the 140GB HD's - I was told this is because of legacy projectors that can only handle this stuff and they are still out there from when Star Wars episode 1 came out
IMO this is unacceptable to do since the projectors can do better than that, the people at the theaters who know what they are talking about are unhappy with this also
not to mention they have to re-master this for Blu Ray anyways so WTF?

That sounds about right for a 240:1 ratio movie. Scope titles are letterboxed just like Blue Ray. The server can do the vertical stretch if the theater uses an anamorphic lens.

why would it be like that - film is something like 4000 lines or so - and these projectors can do almost half that (in some cases more) so why have it at such a low res
I thought DLP cinemas were sosposta look great and in some cases as good as film, so again if it was shot on film even if it is 35mm at 2.35:1 it should still be capable of at least 2000 lines vertical res
if this were a film projector yea it wouldnt be full frame 35mm but it would be atleast half and look great
what am I not understanding here about this?

Prints don't have negative resolution. There are no 2000 lines on release prints. Most films have a 2K DI anyway these days so you get at most 1500 lines with a digital projector and less with film prints. That's for anamorphic material only.

According to the DCI Digital Cinema System Specification Version 1.1, the 2K image structure is a 2048x1080 pixel array with square pixels. Per section 3.2.1.8,
a "scope" image with a 2.39 aspect ratio would have 2048x858 pixels, and
a "flat" image with a 1.85 aspect ratio would have 1998x1080 pixels.
IMHO, such images shown with the Christie CP2000 projectors look very good.

I havent seen the christie cp2000 yet but I will - it just seemed like it should be much higher than what it is
after all film is really high and I have herd some people comment on how some DLP projections look as good as film and in some cases better (not all a lot of people still prefer film)
on another similar subject I dont like 24fps material - it is just like 6FPS to slow and I can see the frames, its like a old timie movie or something like that and the only reason I can see for still doing this is that those extra 6fps's would require a lot more film to capture and cost would go up - thats why I liked the idea of digital theaters maybe they could run things at 48 or 72 or maybe 120 fps to keep the same 24 frames - no need to go any further in this you know what I am talking about here ^
