View Full Version : If 50" Kuro 111 is too big...which 46" would you recommend

I was all set to get a 111 Kuro, but now 50" may be too big for our living room size...at least according to the wife. I still have my fingers crossed...but just in case i do have to drop down in size, which 46" flat panel would you guys suggest? plasma or lcd, i would have to be open to both.

(i know 111 is still the better way to go, so please no suggestions on how to get the wife to agree :p. )

thanks.

Panasonic TH-46PZ850U

But fight hard for the Kuro :)

just looked at the specs.

the panny is 10" narrower than the 111 (with speakers), but only half an inch shorter. I think the height contributes more to the "it looks too big" factor. i was hoping a 46" would be closer to 3" less in height. i really dont want to drop down to a 42" :(

the xbr4/5 and sammy 4681 were also within 1 inch of the 111.

May not be what you are looking for but consider the Panasonic Professional plasma montiors -- their bezels are often smaller than the "TVs" bezels. Draw backs are most are 720P and don't include speakers (not sure if you need them). I haven't purchased or seen them personally, but thought it might be something for you to consider to try to meet that WAF (wife acceptance factor).

Bring it in the house. It'll take her maybe 3 days to adjust to it.

It can't be too big, I'm pretty sure. The plasma has perfect off-axis viewing, and the LCD doesn't. That's a bigger factor for a family room than size. Plus, I sit 6 feet or so away, and I feel my 50" Kuro is too small. With other types, RPTV etc., size matters, but IMO not so much with plasmas.

none. If you can't get a Kuro then you might want to knock down some walla and increase the size of the living room.

Time for aliaskary to do some negotiating. There must be something she really wants?

Thats what I would do.

I tell you what,

At least I didn't get the 151 when I was married. I bet that woman would have took the TV.
Then I would have to sue for Kuro visitation and joint custody. Maybe even a little Kuro-mony for the pain and suffering.:D

Thank goodness its just me and my Kuro now!

If you want me to I could get a hair sample from my wife so you can clone her. She wants a 58" Samsung for watching football thinking the 50" is to small.

omg, i cant stop laughing. you guys sure dont disappoint.

According to her I am obsessed with the plasma. It will be our first upgrading from a 32" crt.

I did some playing around with photoshop. This first set is just eye balling it.

She said its too big, but things were still ok.

Then my obession took over. I made the mistake of making a mockup of the size to see how it would look. It was a black sheet of paper 56 7/8 inches by 31 1/32 inches. We sat in front of it and to be honest, it was a little overwhelming. It took total attention in the space, not somethig we really wanted. Here is the picture using the sheet as a mask in photoshop to get actual size.

It doesnt look bad in these pictures, but in reality it was pretty darn big. Yes, Im a guy so there is no such thing as too big. I even had a deal that i hand over cash to her for anything she wants in the same amount of the tv. thats not working now either.

Hi,

Just buy the 50" Pioneer and when you get it home and set up, just measure the screen width in front of her - it will be less than 50" - they usually fall for that immediately just make sure she does not see the box or instructions beforehand!

Suave!

:D

thats not the problem. I can move the tv back about 6 inches. (couch cant go any further back) This is an apartment, so the only living/lounge room. To the right is a small dining area where a round 4 seater table is.

she is not worried about the actual measurement, but how much it takes over the space. and now shes seen the actual size in the mockup.

with our first child due november, i told her this is my last chance for a toy FOR ME. Its now or never. Already gave up the motorbike. better things to do with the cash than a sports car, for now at least. happy with all the other electonics i have. someone else in another post suggested this could be the b'day present for the next 5 years.

im still working on her :p have been for 4 years. was drooling over a 46" sharp then switched the drooling to the kuro 18 months ago.

Good stuff here! I had the opposite experience: I was planning to buy the 46PZ800U and the girlfriend said to go bigger! I taped an outline of the 50PZ800U to the wall behind the current TV and I have to agree that it looks huge, and I think the 46 would have been the better size, but I ordered the 50 and it will arrive next week. We'll see. To be honest, I'd probably had bought a 42" Kuro if one had been offered this year.

One of the problems you have is that the "Next Best Thing" Panny 800/850's have a larger bezel than the Kuro, so even though you are looking to drop to the 46" size, if you chose one of them you might not gain as much improvement as you may expect: you only lose an inch off each side. On the plus side, the speakers are hidden, so the total width is going to be way smaller than the 111. The Panny commercial models have smaller bezels than the Kuros, but lack the stand and speakers it appears you need. Plus it does not look like Panasonic will offer a 46" commercial model, so again you'd be looking at the 50", which probably would not meet the WAF. I'm not sure what sizes are available for the new Samsungs, but they seem to be getting some rave review, as well.

I actually like the way that 111 photoshop pic looks, since you've already got that nice wide stand there. But are you certain it's the 111 she objects to, or is the fact that you'll have to remove the wedding picture?? Tread lightly, my friend.

Just buy the 111 and take your lumps. The couch looks big enough to sleep on for a couple of weeks, it's right in front of where the 111 will be, and you'll be so enthralled with the 111 that you'll be more interested in sleeping with it than the wife for at least a few nights anyway.

aliaskary77
07-25-08, 11:27 AM
the wedding picture will find a better place on a new console table she wants for the wall on the right.

it literally is just the fact that its big. when sitting on the couch and facing it, its almost like thats all that you can see.

a conversation 5 minutes ago:

me: I'm getting it.
her: It's too big.
me: I'm still getting it.
her: But its too big for this room!
me: (silent, thinking of next strategy)

you are right about bezels. The thin ones are sharp and toshiba, but LCD :S

The key here is to lie.
The beauty here is that the 111 includes no numbers that allude to its size. Simply tell her its the 46in version from pio's elite line.

The best marriages rely on careful subterfuge as their foundation.

As for the actual size issue, both you and your wife will be happier with the 50, so the end justify the means...

lol alex.

ok, sat in the living room with the cutout infront of us.

xbr4 and sharp 46 is almost the same height, to which she said height is not much of a factor, but the width.

i said ok, let me show you this. 111 no speakers and 5020, same width, to which she said its somewhat better, but isnt it still a little high.

i said hey, im not going down to 42....there's no point in getting a new tv then. (even though the dimensions of the pio 950 would be perfect, im not getting 1024x768!!)

so i told her, pioneer it is then ;) and walked away with my cutout lol.

now options are 5020, or 111 with speakers mounted behind the tv. I dont have or want to buy receiver with surround speakers. (cant turn it up high becuase its a condo and wifes too sensitive to loudness, and baby on the way). another arguement for me was with the baby, we wont be able to go to the theatres much, so lets enjoy here.

i think i know the answer. 111...speakers to be determined, mwahahaha.

Good call. 5020 would have made it even higher because the stand has to accommodate the bottom mounted speaker. I'd probably set up with the speakers installed, with the concession that you'll remove them if your wife still objects after a week or so.

I just upgraded to the 111 from a 27" CRT recently. It initially looks huge in comparison, but you get used to it fairly quickly. I went from "Holy Sh*t it's massive" to "it's just right" in about an hour.

There is also an option of Pioneer Elite 101 (monitor only) - thinner bazel, no speakers, no tuner, but you will need to get a stand.

Grow a pair and get the 50 inch!

When women first see something big, they often think they can't accommodate it .... but once they get used to it, they love it! ;)

Seriously, you'll both think it's huge at first, but a week later anything smaller won't seem right.

There is always a shock when you go up in TV size. I started with a 19" Magnavox way back in the day as a teenager. Then went to a 32" Wega when I was 20. When I went from that to a 42" LCD I was flipping out. It just seemed massive. I got used to it and stepped up to a 55" SXRD. I had originally planned on getting a 50". When I first got that at first I had buyers remorse thining Oh crap this is too big! I now have a 60" SXRD, I sit about 8' away and it is perfect. :) As you stated before there is no such thing as too big. You get used to it REALLY quick. You won't regret your decision IMHO.

True. When we got our 50" plasma, I thought I had made a mistake and that it was too huge. After a week it looked right, and after a month it looks almost small, even though it's the right size for our space and viewing distance.

I have both the Pio 151FD and couple of Sony XBR5 Bravias - 52 and 47 inch. Each technology has their pros and cons. The Bravia LCDs are excellent for HD content but OK for SD (based on my experience). Aesthetically, the Sony Bravia XBR look very nice. I'd be hard pressed to replace my LCD for plasmas in the locations where I have them (bedroom and office) or to replace my Plasma (living room) with LCD. What is your distance? I find that the 60 inch plasma from 9 ft away looks great with most DVD and HD content. Not so great with regular SD TV. Hence why I pass TV through my HTPC which reduces the size to a 42 inch screen (boxed in) and hence looks much better from that distance. I use my cable box only for HD content.

Although Hell hath no fury liked a knocked-up woman in summertime, you won't be sorry you did it. Eventually, anyway.

If she's still pissed after a week or so, tell her that the 111 is really for your unborn child to watch Noggin and Nick Jr. on.

In sales, there's an expression that "telling isn't selling." After you get the new TV installed, SHOW her how great it is by cuddling with her on the couch and watching one of the following:

Titanic
The Notebook
Sleepless in Seattle
Shakespeare in Love
The Illusionist
The Princess Bride

These movies are proven chick-pleasers that you might enjoy too... and they should look great on your new screen even if you don't have Blu-Ray. All are available in widescreen except The Notebook. (Sorry if this is a bit off-topic but it might definitely help the WAF!)

man you guys are hilarious. i was tempted to show the wife this thread but decided its better not to.

walking around the mall, we stepped into the sony store today, like i have for the last 3 years on every mall visit. 10 feet in, she goes "now why are you coming in here?!?" lol

hopefully will get it by the end of the week and post some pics on the kuro pics thread, along with some SD (480i) screens I had requested but never got to see :P
