I'm looking into getting a plasma to replace my older RPTV. i will be sitting roughly 10-14 feet from the screen. Att he very least it will be a 50" display. If i can I plan on getting a 58" if I can find one.

At that distance will I notice a pronounced difference in PQ?

If I can go 720, i should be able to get a bigger display. 58" (if they even make em that big in 720)

If I go 1080, i will have to limit myself to 50" most likely due to cost.

i just dont wanna shoot myself in the foot by not getting 1080.

i will be watching movies, playing xbox360 on it.....eventually getting a ps3 so bluray will be a facto also eventually.

For me, at that distance it has to be 58"+. I think you will regret it later if you get a 50" screen.

What's your budget?

yeah....i taped together a bunch of paper in the size of the screen dimensions for a 50" and it felt small. i have an older 4:3 RPTV 53" and it felt much bigger. 50" will be too small.

I didnt realize the 58" 720's were $2500 or so. My budget will probably be somewhere in the 1500 or so range. i think i may be waiting a while or trying to figure out a way to increase my budget.

.. yes, 58" would probably be best at that distance; the Panasonic 58PH10UKA is priced just over 2k, its 720p but 'does not' have an internal tuner, so you'll need cable or satellite STB & direct hdmi/component for players.

wait & save an extra 6/7 hundred. :)

if yer gonna be ~14' from screen, getta hd pj and 100"+ screen. easier to c and way cooler and 'funner'!
no tiny tv's gonna look very good from ~14 feet away!
:)
could be cheaper, 2!

unfortunatly, my house is VERY small. it will be in my front room. i dont have a realistic way to manage the light from 3 large picture windows enough to get a satisfactory result from a PJ i fear. it crossed my mind for sure. i wish i could get my hands on a nice 720p projector and a decent screen and test it in my front room and see how it looks. my walls are a darker brown.....with the right curtains....perhaps it would work. unfortunatly i dont know anyone who has one that could let me test it out.

And i really want to move towards a less obtrusive tv, thus the flat panel to hang on the wall. I think i will just wait a bit and see what i can find.

Another option would be to go with the Samsung 61" LED DLPs. For the price that you are looking at and the size you want, it's not a bad option. The viewing angle is not very good so assuming that you will be center stage, this is not a bad option for the price point.

yeah....i really want to get away from anything with any depth if i can. right now my big RPTV is in the corner taking up too much room. i want to mive it to the centoer fo the wall for optimum viewing and sound. thus a flat panel. ant other kind will stick out too far for mty tastes.

i think i will keep looking, but also do some testing to see how dark i can get the room for projector viewing

a 100"+ pull-down projection screen has almost NO DEPTH, it's flat as a pancake and can just about disappear.

^^^^yeah, i was just looking over in the projector forums. if i went projector route - i would probably just do a permenant screen on the wall.

my main reservation is that this is the primary tv in the house - i.e. I will be using it daily. I am worried a bit about burning out the bulb. a quick check online stores show 720p projectors, nice ones for well within my budget. i could probably get a nicer surround setup also along with a screen for my budget......again, i wonder about being able to get the room dark enough. also i dont want to have to have the room superdark just so i can watch tv. its nice to have lights on while i watch also.

so.....if the set was on daily, for a few hours between my self kids and wife, how often will i be replacing the bulb?

and will i still be able to see the screen with lights on? (drapes closed, just some dimmer lights)

thats out of my price range right now. i keep going back and forth but i really think a plasma would suit my needs better. i just need to save a bit longer.

currently that panny is the front runner. nice thing is, the longer i save, the cheaper they will be!

The thing is, if you only have 1500 to spend, and you spend 1500 on something you regret because you keep wishing you had just that little bit extra, it's going to be a worse value for you than had you saved up a little longer and gotten the right thing.

I can say for sure that at 14 feet a 50" plasma won't look bad, and it will be impressive when folks come over and see your bad-ass HDTV, but it's not going to give you that big-screen immersive feel (especially with movies, 2.35:1 movies will look downright small). I normally sit 7-9ft from a 50", and when I sit at the dining table which is about 14-15 ft away to watch TV while eating it definitely loses that impact.

Is the furniture arrangement inflexible? Are you stuck at 14ft? If so, I would save the coins for a few more months and go for a 58".

Oh, and you should not even be considering 1080p. From that distance, and with a tight budget, that is the absolute last of your concerns.

ok thanks. ill be saving for the 58 inch.

hmmmm.....what can i sell to get the extra couple hundred.....i DO have 2 kids.....i only need one realistically......

and "settling" for 720p means the cost will be much less.

thanks all!

Cleveland Plasma (forum text sponsor) has a 58" Samsung 1080P Plasma (FP-T5884) \ I am trying to convince myself that my Pioneer PDP-5070 (720P) plasma is just fine from about 13 feet away! :)

Jesus dude. No need to convince yourself of that. Send it on my way if you don't like it.
