I have the BEOWULF UK Blu-Ray (VC1-THD), which I think is the same encode as the HD-DVD.

I can pick up the domestic version today. Does anyone know if it's the same encode or is it an AVC or VC1 optimized for a BD50?

UK is Warner, US is Paramount.

It is almost certainly different.

I would expect VC-1 optimised for BD, going by Paramount's recent releases (http://www.blu-raystats.com/Stats/Stats.php?OrderBy=Released&Date=2008&Studio=Paramount).
