So right now I've got all my Blu-rays and HD-DVDs alpha sorted mixed together. Movies, shows then music videos.

Some of the "issues" I have is how do you sort some of em'.
For example numbers. I have 21 followes by 300 then 3:10 to yuma. Should 3:10 to yuma go before 21 or after 300?

I've also got all the rambo movies on HD-DVD and Blu-ray.
Right now I have first blood on blu-ray under F and have rambo: first blood pt II and rambo III and Rambo after them (in the F's) then I've got the orginal 3 on HD-DVD as well. The french versions. Which are marked rambo, rambo II and rambo III so those are under the R's.

But I've also got pitch black and chr of riddick seperated. How ever all my dirty harry films are under D. I've got them in simple custom cases so they could be in seprate locations.

Blu and HD separate. HDTV shows go with the regular shows.

I have about 75HD and 30 or so Blu.

Red next to the Toshiba player, and Blu next to the PS3.

My collection is still small compared to most here. I wasn't really into DVD collecting so I only have around 70 SDs. Perhaps I'll go alphabetical when I have more but at the moment I've got my DVDs and BDs mixed on the same shelf, sorted by genre. I already need to clear more shelf space to put up the cheap reds I picked up.

I just categorize mine with no alpha so it goes like this documentary, drama, action/adventure, comedy etc.. So all the robot movies are together like I Robot, Transformers etc. All the space stuff all of the vampire and ware wolfs etc,;) you get the idea...

By genre, and the kiddie ones are nearer to the ground. The demo material is front and center at eye level.

Blue and red mixed together, in alphabetical order. Some things are tricky, like the First Blood sequeled with Rambo II (F vs R), or sequels in general which don't start with the same title (Batman Begins vs Dark Knight, The) or Evan & Bruce Almighty.

I’m up to just over 200 BDs now. I organise by genre, and then, generally speaking, alphabetically within each genre. But I’m flexible about the whole thing, for instance I like to put sequels together, and I have all the Warner Stanley Kubrick BDs grouped with each other.

I have all of my 500 or so DVDs arranged in a similar fashion. The only difference being the inclusion of the DVD category known as “double-dipper’s row”(Oh the shame!) where DVDs (once there has been an official announcement) go to await being replaced by a Blu-ray version, some get replaced as soon as the new title comes out on BD (“Batman Begins” is at the front of the line right now –it comes out here on 5th August) some when there is a sale; I just bought “Eight Below” for cheap, and some will probably never get replaced at all, “Urban Legend” springs to mind.

I promised myself that I wouldn’t run willy-nilly into double-dipping, but I’m afraid I have. And frankly if I really think about it I don’t regret it; I’ve had a lot of enjoyment re-watching titles in hi-def that I already own on DVD. And then there’s the fact of the dodgy quality of a lot of DVDs, some are mastered quite well, but for instance, I tried to get through “Mars Attacks” on the big screen the other day (11 foot scope screen) and it was virtually unwatchable because of the poor picture quality.

I’ve put together a new Excel sheet where I’m cataloguing all of my BD titles, it’s a pain in the neck so I’ve only got through about 65 of my discs so far.

I like to keep them separate. There is a nice contrast between the Blue and Red cases :) I also use the windows ripoff of Delicious Library for Macs to catalog my collection.

HD DVDs seperate from the BDs. This is mainly so my wife can easily tell what goes in what player. That and I hate to see all that red split up by the occasonal blue :)

HD DVD - Currently at 627
Blu Ray - Currently at 112

Random. HD DVDs in with Blu Rays and no particular order.... alphabetical or otherwise.

DVDs in a different area, unsorted as well. I may've watched 3 DVDs in the last 1 year. They are headed for the trash or church for donation (likely the latter). I have already started giving them away..

Dang, you must have every single HD DVD released to date. I thought I had a lot. Mine is red and blue mixed in alphabetical orders. Titles starting with numbers are put in alphabetical order (21 goes in as twenty one).

HD DVD - Currently at 346
Blu-ray - Currently at 336

Some of the "issues" I have is how do you sort some of em'.You may want to give Movie Collector (http://www.collectorz.com/movie/) software a try. It has many ways that you can sort your media collection. You can try before you buy.

I sort by: User 1 (Movie or Special), Owner, Title and Collection Status. There is a separate Field for Title Sorting. This is very handy for all those The XXXX YYYY titles. This could also be used for numbered titles. Normally, numbered titles would be sorted like this:
100000
2001
2010
3:10
3000

If you entered the following in the Title Sort Field:
000003:10
002001
002010
003000
100000

Title sort result:
3:10
2001
2010
3000
100000

Dang, you must have every single HD DVD released to date. Not just every single one, but every single one from every country!

Currently, my Blu-rays are on the top shelves, then DVDs. Large collector's sets (for instance, the "Freaks and Geeks" Yearbook) are in the bottom three slots.

I used to keep my HD DVDs and BDs separate, but that was becoming a pain in the butt. Mixed alphabetical order is soooo much easier. As far as "number" moves such as 300 or 2001, I file them alphabetically according to the first letter. So, 300 would be filed under T "Three Hundred".

I keep my standard DVDs separate from my high def discs.

How do you sort your books, anyway? Alphabetically, genre, publisher, format? I didn't think so, either.

I split into fiction (by author), graphical (by title), non-fiction (Dewey). No small thanks to Bruji's BookPedia for that. 'Course, I've also got 500+ books...

$50 for the software (which also includes *Pedias for my CDs/SA-CDs/DVD-As, games, and movies) plus $5 for a CueCat made it a rainy Sunday afternoon's easy work.

Based on sequence number that translates to purchase order (mostly) and cataloged using Movie Label 2009.

Movie Label has an excellent search feature (but displays titles in alpha order by default)

No I am missing quite a few from Japan. All of the ones from Russia, about 10-15 from the European Countries, A bunch of porn, About 10 domestics but Japan is by far the biggest black hole in my collection.

I also second Movie Collector as a sorting tool. Not only does it allow me to alphabetize without trying but it also makes neat web pages so I can see what I have on the go and also exports out to my PocketPC.

Funny thing is that it is one of the few things I am anal about. My wife constantly bitches that I am the weirdest freak as my "man room" is a mess, I don't care about much of anythig being neat but I raise holy hell if one of my movies is not put back and put in the correct place.

My HDDVDs have gone in a box since I pulled the add-on from my 360. My Blu-ray are sorted by studio since they put their studio markers and decorative pics, etc in similar places.

PS3 games are second to bottom shelf and 360 games bottom shelf.

Alhabetical red and blue separate...
A week ago I was looking for I am legend in the red section and remembered my copy was blu.
I guess I will mix it all together since I'll have quite a few dual-format franchise Harry Potter, Heroes, Transformers, Batman begins, The Fast and the Furious to name a few. I already have Flags of Our Fathers (HD-DVD) & Letters from Iwo Jima (Blu-Ray) these two belongs together.

Not really for HDM, but for all my media. by type(book/text, photo/film still, audio, video/film motion). by format. pre recorded, self recorded, master recording. region if any. 0-9, alphabetical. But with sub sections under format for animation, silent, and non English sorted by country. Most self recorded programs contain recording info on when it was recorded, location, network and local station info, along with source of transmission, OTA, cable, SAT with sub section DVB, DBS, C,.etc.

I just do alphabetical, with both HDM formats mixed, separate from DVDs. It's just easier to find stuff that way, rather than having to remember what package something has, or what HDM format it's on. Obviously series like LOTR are in order rather than strictly alphabetical (where ROTK would come before TTT).

I usually go by DVD Profiler's sorting WRT numbers, and I don't have many numbered titles so it doesn't matter much. I would be inclined to use the first number as a letter rather than figuring out the value of the number. For "complicated" titles like 3:10 to Yuma I would just put it where I feel like it because really, there aren't that many numbered titles anyway.

Oh, another thing I do is, if there's a title with a pre-title (? not sure of the word) like "Tim Burton's Corpse Bride," I go ahead and leave the title listed as is, but I change the sort title to "Corpse Bride" because I would naturally look for it under C. It's the same thing with "National Lampoon's Animal House" - I just expect that to be under A because everybody calls it Animal House.

I've considered sorting by genre, but I just think there would be too many conflicts. For example, is Forrest Gump or American Beauty a comedy or drama? I don't know and I don't care.

Or with directors, do you put Alien with the other Ridley Scott films, or with other Alien movies? What if you have the Quadrilogy where they're together in one package? Having these kinds of exceptions would just make the system pointless, to me anyway.

HDM is kept separate from DVD, but both collections are organized the same way: alphabetical, by title. Numbered titles (28 Days Later, 300, etc.) are with the other "T"s, in alphabetical order (Twenty-Eight Days Later, Three Hundred, etc.)

Sequels are placed directly after the original film (ie. The Devil's Rejects comes right after House of 1,000 Corpses on my shelf). If I hadn't bought the Rambo box set, all 4 "Rambo" Blu-rays would have been filed under "F" for "First Blood". They are under "R" since the box set is simply titled as "Rambo".

Alphabetical: CD's and DVD's are kept elsewhere.

The adult stuff is kept separate as well. However, I mix the red and blue. At over 120 HD DVD titles, it will be a long time before blue catches up.

I do mine red and blue together, first numbers (going by first digit, so that 300 comes after 12 Monkeys but before 50 First Dates), then alphabetical. Before I kept sequels together, but now I just have it alphabetical. The exceptions are for sequels that share the same movie title and then a subtitle, in which case I put them in chronological order.

My regular DVDs are kept in a closet shelf stacked in no particular order. I sell or give away the ones I replace with HD.

BD separate from DVD in different cabinets as I replace my collection slowly.

Movies first, then music (concerts etc).

Each one 0-9, then A-Z, regardless of boxsets or not. Exception : over sized strange containers (eg : bladerunner suitcase) gets placed on top of the cabinet as shelves are not high or deep enough for these things.

I have too many titles in too many formats... but I keep tapes separated from discs. Then the rule is simple: alphabetical order (unless the films are inside a collection - in that case I'll stick to the collection's title).

DVDs, HD DVDs and Blu-rays are all together in alphabetical order. I just feel that shelves with the same package (blue or red) are too dull to look at.

ChrisW6ATV

Now that I finally sorted all my HD discs... I have four categories: HD DVD unwatched, Blu-ray unwatched, and each format but already watched. I alphabetize within each category. A sequel with a non-matching name (Live Free Or Die Hard) goes under its own first letter (L in this case). If I had a box set, it would be under the letter of the first movie, or under the name of the set. Numbered movies (300, 12 Monkeys) get treated as if the number was spelled out. Box sets stay in "unwatched" until I have watched the whole set.

Is all that clear and simple enough? :)

We have more than we can fit in the three DVD cabinets we have, so we broke them up between movies (which are spread between those three cabinets), and everything else (TV shows and other miscellaneous stuff) that goes in a separate cabinet. Beyond that, it's straight alphabetical order, BR, HDDVD, and DVD all mixed together. If/when we buy an HD of an SD DVD we already have, the SD gets pulled and thrown in the box to sell (and taken off of our database: http://www.dvdspot.com/member=darinandvic )

I don't know what we'll do when we outgrow the three dvd cabinets (in the VERY near future), we don't really have space for another one of those. :(

For the first few years of DVD I used to have to sort by studio, with Warner and New Line separate from everything else, luckily that's not an issue anymore. I sort in this order: Case Size/Type>Genre>Subgenre>Series>Director>Series Order or Release Date(in the case of multiple titles in the same genre by the same director)>Alphabetical

Quite a good solution for Bluray and HD discs organizing.
