View Full Version : Wall or ceiling mounts that will support my rather heavy surrounds...

For a variety of reasons, I really would like to go ceiling mount with some surrounds I bought utilizing some wiring that was built in with the house. I have, however, run into a bit of a problem: The surrounds I bought I messed up with both the dimensions of (they are deeper than I thought they were) and in weight (20.7 lbs). In a pinch I can probably custom build some shelves that hang from the ceiling, but I'd like to see what people suggest as possible stock ceiling mounts. Wall mounts might also work (would change the positioning some and make the issue of getting the wire over to them a bit of a challenge, but it should be doable as the wire isn't far from the wall). These are rear ported speakers (Beta 20's).

Thoughts? Ideas? Why I'd prefer to stay away from stands is a multifold thing that I'd just as soon not get into, so I'm really hoping for good options for wall or ceiling mount. If not, I may be forced to sell these back off and try and find some Beta 10's (which are actually slightly more expensive at this point).

TIA.

I'm suspecting that, by the time this is all over, I may wind up posting some thread on the general subject of ceiling and wall mounts. I'm no expert, but I find quite a few questions in this area that go completely unanswered, so I'll likely share my own findings when I'm done in the hope that I'll get a more general discussion going that winds up having a more full range of information in it that can eventually be summarized into an article or FAQ.

For now, here's what I'm seeing:

First, there are a few - but precious few - mount manufacturers that make readily available mounts for over 10 pounds. The number goes down further if you want above 20 pounds (which my application is just slightly above). Omnimount is far and away the most prolific in terms of finding dealers, and they have a configurable application for both 30 and 60 pound applications. I'm waiting until Monday to talk by phone with the only dealer I've found that seems to offer all of the variations of this model (it's amazing how adaptable it at least appears to be).

The additional hitch is that, now that I have the targeted Beta 20's in hand, I've discovered that they don't have any adaptations on them for mounting - it's pretty clear they expect to be shelf or stand mounted - period. Unfortunately, that isn't what I want to do. ;) I'm hoping that I'm going to find a stock solution with the Omnimount (or some other stock mount) - if not, I think I'm going to molly into the ceiling with a 4 point eye hook arrangement, then hang a shelf from cables (thus meeting the expectation of the 20's being shelf mounted - even if it isn't the kind of shelf they were expecting!).

I'm using a pair of Vogel's brackets (not sure of the model #) to hang my heavy DCMs in the garage. I think they are more into the monitor-mount business but they do have speaker mounts. They are very sturdy and rated for 40lbs (I think. They're not wimpy). Easily adjustable up/down and side/side. Google for them, but they were hard to find. Even a cursory search now finds them discontinued or out of stock most places. I found mine on eBay earlier this year.

Good luck

Thanks for the tip. I wish I could find a full catalog on Vogel's, but, as you suggest, most things addressing them seem to either reference it as "no longer available" or are very short on technical details. They do have a center channel setup that may work (it's actually two separate brackets per speaker), and they have a clamp based model if I decided to do wall mount (suboptimal, but doable).

I'm hoping to figure out a specific approach on this and get everything on order today. The last of the new gear I ordered is due in on Friday, and I'd like to be able to finish getting things running by Sunday night. :)

The B-Tech BT-77 wall mounts will support up to 50lbs!

I use them for my Polk RTI4s as my front mains - nice mount.

You do need to locate studs for a secure mount configuration though - I wouldn't want to use drywall studs or toggles for anything heavy.

ymmv,
Erik

This may sound cheesy but I once used picture/mirror hangers rated at 50lbs and 1/4" braided nylon cord rated 90lbs to hang some 25lb wall mount speakers. Definitely had to hit a stud with the nails. Home Depot carries them. These speakers weren't very deep so it worked well.

Edit: reread your post. Those rear ports will make wall mounting difficult.
