View Full Version : Pulling the trigger on a kuro 6020..but one question???
stompamudhole 07-26-08, 03:06 AM Just one question..Has anybody got into the service menu?...
There was discussion I once read about that D-Nice had gotten into it but is that just here say or could someone point me in the right direction
Someone talked me out of getting the 6010 and pointed me to the 6020 instead
stompamudhole 07-26-08, 12:01 PM Is it really worth it to get the 6020 over the 6010?

I don't have one personally, but I did read in the thread that even the service menu has much more limited adjustability on the 9G series than last years 8G. Just for the non-elites though, the elites have all the adjustability you want
av.pallino 07-26-08, 12:16 PM If it were me I would rank the Pios in the following order (based on my own purchasing decision):
1. Pio 151 Elite
2. Pio 150 Elite
3. Pio 6010
4. Pio 6020.
I would rate the 150 and 151 very very close since the 150 has the inputs pointing downwards and on a side by side comparison using Pirates of the Carrubean Blu ray I felt they were a tie.
Overall all these displays are great but the missing controls on the 6020 could be a problem.
stompamudhole 07-26-08, 12:23 PM Hmmm. Crap...Thats probably why I see the 6010 at a higher price than alot of the 6020's

I'd disagree. The black level increase on the 6020 vs. the 6010 is significant, and the picture quality improvement is definitely there. The lack of specific controls on the 6020 is a bummer, but is still a superior set over the 6010.
That said, I do recommend the 151 over the 6020 if you can spring for it.
stompamudhole 07-26-08, 01:04 PM can't really justify the extra couple grand for the elite.

RandyWalters 07-26-08, 02:03 PM Hmmm. Crap...Thats probably why I see the 6010 at a higher price than alot of the 6020'sActually the MSRP on the 6010 was higher than the MSRP on the newer 6020 (prices drop every successive model year) so the stores that still have 6010s probably can't drop the price to 6020 levels otherwise they'd lose money. Same thing happened with Panasonic for the past 3 years i've been paying attention.
And if i'm not mistaken, D-Nice stated something to the effect that based on the 5020's better performance, he'd rather have a 5020 even with the reduced user settings than a 5010 with it's additional settings. Do more research on the 6020's overall performance before listening to one or two people's personal rankings.

Is I responded in the Kuro non-elite owners (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=14372919#post14372919) thread it mostly comes down to how much you value a complete ISF NTSC standards based calibration.
I assume selecting last years Kuro model over this years at similar prices mostly implies an intent to get a full calibration on last years model. Otherwise I'm not sure what the compelling reasons would be.
I also think some people may have the wrong idea of what it means to get an ISF calibrated setting on a display (or some pay for more than one setting). Some think it means you have achieved the one superior setting for all content sources at all room environments. That is debatable at the least but if you use your setting that way then it might be worth it to buy the 6010 and also pay for a pro calibration to dial in the standards.
Accd to D-nice it should be easy to access the service menu for grayscale calibration once they release the instructions (and ControlCal program profile). I think it raised an interesting question about the possibility of as-close-as-possible-calibrating a Kuro XX20. (May pro calibrations are really as-close-as-possible results anyway).
I will be curious if you can find calibrators that will take a shot at adjusting a 6020 for grayscale and other settings outside of the Color Points? Pioneer obviously thinks it's uneccessary for most customers at all but if you had the software ready to go some calibrator might be able to dial the set closer to standards for your viewing environment, at a reduced fee hopefully since he shouldn't have as much work to do. ;)
stompamudhole 07-26-08, 02:55 PM Thanks guys.. 6020 for the win:)

I think you made the right decision in getting the 6020.
I think we non-Elite owners, or people on the fence which to buy, need to wait for D-Nice to finish his official review of the 111 which is going to include his findings of what can be adjusted/controlled in the Service Menu of non-Elites. From what I've read in the SM I am pretty hopeful that additional calibration controls beyond greyscale will be achievable:).
We just have to wait for him to release his findings.
Thanks guys.. 6020 for the win:)
thanks, for asking the question.:)
I'm in for one 6020, too....
ROMAN O 07-26-08, 03:40 PM Actually the MSRP on the 6010 was higher than the MSRP on the newer 6020 (prices drop every successive model year) so the stores that still have 6010s probably can't drop the price to 6020 levels otherwise they'd lose money. Correct as always :)
any forum sponsor cares to pm me with a decent offer for a 6020, please...

6010 over the 6020??
what make you come to this conclusion.
To the OP,
If you get the 6010 over the 6020 you will regret it IMO.
The 6020 is one flat out awesome TV.
I had the 6020 but now have the elite 151.
The Picture quality/ movie experience of the 6020 is only beatable by the 151 IMO. And side by side it is hard to tell a difference during movie content.
Colors can be more accurate on the 151, but the 6020 will not disappoint.
The black level difference between the 6020 and the 6010 is large and very noticable.
I know alot of people are washing thier hands with the 6020 since Pioneer made the horrible mistake of removing setting features.
But still, the 5020/6020's are magnificant!
I rank them like this:
1. Pio 151 Elite
2. Pio 6020
3. Pio 150 Elite
4. 6010
I have not had the 6010 but I did have the 5080. Which is 768p but IMO is just as good as the 5010, which is the same as the 6010 just smaller.
I loved having the 6020. If I had not had the option of replacing the 6020 with a 151, It would not have been a huge deal to me.
If you can, get the 151.
If you can't get the 6020.

Ditto...or email me at shaneandkarmen@verizon.net
I personally thought the 6020 was a very dim set. Its blacks were great but I didnt like how dim the set was. You should wait for the 58" Panny 800u to come out so you can compare them!

just google search for pioneer 6020fd and the best price and unbeatable price comes up
and use amex card-- b/c their customer protecton and extended warranty are amazing compared to visa and MC-- i tried all 3 many times and amex is the best
Cleveland Plasma 07-26-08, 07:11 PM Done :D Great choice in panels by the way.
Just a note, Samsung is just about giving away the FP-T5884. Not as nice as the Pioneer but a person can have 1 Unit---Pioneeer PDP-6020FD or 2 Units---Samsung FP-T5884 for just about the same price. ( Food for thought )

As Chris likes to say the best price is not the best deal ;) Or something like that.

I certainly hope you aren't talking about who I think you are.
They may have a competitve price but thier customer service is total crap. That is unless you enjoy talking to someone who lives across the globe and is not authorized to do anything other than read auto-responces from a monitor.
Personally,
I would rather give my hard earned money to a smaller company that is more customer service oriented and will be there for me if something happens.
After that 30-day period, just try calling them for help.
You get what you pay for!
Ronin Racing 07-27-08, 09:30 AM Hey all. Been lurking around for awhile and finally pulled the trigger on a 6020 at a Big Box for the same price as a clearance 6010 display model. I think they were just too lazy to unhook and rebox the 6010! Hey...works for me.
Glad to see that I (hopefully) made the right choice.
PM me if you want to know the details where and $$$...if that's allowed.

I didn`t quite understand what you said-- But I absolutely agree with Roman and you that the best price is not the best deal because these guys from Brooklyn are prof. cheats --- It is a risky decision to buy a TV from them in case you get a defective set.

Also I am not trying to undermine any of the sincere forum sponsors here. I am just monitoring the price trend. And I`m pretty sure that the forum sponsors will not overcharge. As a matter of fact , the prices for 151FD are now where close to the forum sponsors if we check on the web.
And lately, I`ve been hearing rumours of an early MSRP drop from pioneer this year... this I heard from one authorized elite dealer

Should not be a couple grand from PDP to Elite or you are shopping in the wrong place.
Regards to wifey, remind her that murder is a capital offense :-)
Postman17 09-19-08, 03:57 PM Well I have the 6020 and like it. I do think it is bright enough. I just think the yellowish tint is bothersome. I know a couple of ppl on here that are getting there 6020s calibrated. When the pm with there results, I will then do minds. The set really does blow me away with certain material. I don't think I would change for any thing else.
