Hi there! I'm a newbie but know this is where the experts come to discuss. I was hoping you guys could help me out.

I'm looking for the biggest screen I can get (preferably 70"+). Basically I have 135" from my viewing position to my current 50" CRT Toshiba HDTV. I will have at least that with whatever new TV I get. So I think I'm ok with 70"+.

Anyway, I was wanting a Samsung DLP because to me, they have the best picture I've seen. There appear to be two models, the older HL-T7288W and the newer HL72A650. Based on the specs, it looks like the T7288W is a better set (mainly contrast ratio); granted I'm no videophile like most of you. Problem is I can't find the older one anywhere in a store to see it (I live in Dallas). I've read this thread (HL-T7288W...First impressions (sorry they won't let me post a URL)), and most people are very impressed.

I've also considered an LCD or Plasma (I can't get my room dark enough for a projector), but the biggest those get (that I've seen) are 65". From what I've read, an LCD/Plasma provides better picture than a Rear Projection DLP. Is that true?

So here's my dilemna I need help with please. Should I go with the DLP since it is bigger? Or is the quality of the LCD/Plasma that much better and worth losing 7 or 8 inches? Are there any 70"+ LCD/Plasmas coming out in the next 6-8 months?

If I go with a DLP, should I go with the old Sammy or new (I can barely find the old one online in a few places)? Is there a better one (Mistubishi, Sony, etc.)?

Any advice you guys could give is GREATLY appreciated.

I'm a bit out of date but will offer an opinion anyways (I own a 72" Toshiba).

Nothing wrong with a DLP. They just aren't skinny, you could be looking at 18"-24" deep (guessing). They usually (always?) have bulbs as well.

Mitsubishi seems to be doing the best in the 70"+ range, or at least giving it the most attention...I would go Mitsubishi unless money is of primary concern; the newest model of course.

You can sit as close as you want if your displaying 1080p content. The lower the resolution the farther you want to sit back. I sometimes sit 6' from my set on a bean bag (Independence Day on Blu-Ray is insane with Lossless audio). 135" is great for all purpose viewing with a set this size.

I really like the Sony LCD's (XBR), but I'd take the DLP to save money and get the larger screen. I have no experience with plamas. I have read some articles on what's up and coming and there are few if any 70"+ screens coming in any category. You might wait and see if there will be a 70"+ Laser HDTV from Mitsubishi though...might cost a fortune though...might be worth it...

Another trick is not to go looking at sets for a long time after you get one...just creates regret...
