View Full Version : Has anyone ever gone from a front projector to a regular HDTV?

I know, strange question. Lots of people here have both...I currently only have one, a 720p projector. I am considering getting the Samsung LED DLP 67" 1080p set, and there are a few reasons.

1) The cost of a projector. I will admit I was short-sighted when I purchased it, but as our only display, it gets used for all of our movie, television, and gaming, all of which we do a lot of. The next bulb I order, I will have paid more for bulbs in an under two year period that I did on the projector itself. It just isn't very economical and you could say I really didn't do lots of research before pulling the trigger. I asked a question or two here and there, but didn't do enough.

2) I don't have fantastic light control. The main room is open on all sides to the kitchen, the front room, the front door, the back door, lots of windows (which have been covered with blackout curtains). There is only one wall I can project onto, and it is, unfortunately opposite the kitchen and back door and windows. Regardless, when I play games I have often squint at dark scenes. (God forbid I have to go into a dark forest.) Anyways, not having to worry about a washed out picture is a big plus, as I can put the TV in a different place.

3) Actual 1080p. I'm a game designer so having an actual 1080p display would be nice.

I know I'd have to adjust to the size, which is why I want the 67" one. I would think about the larger Mitsubishi, but again, I really don't want to have to deal with bulbs again, which is why the LED DLP is appealing. Just so I do have a frame of reference, on a model like the Mitsubishi, how often does the bulb need to get changed?

Any help, suggestions, tips, etc. would be appreciated. Funny I have gone from thinking about upgrading my projector to a different 720p model to this now, but I'm really trying to be more money conscious and a projector really isn't the smart option for us right now.

A couple of other questions.

I have seen that some people buy TV stands for their TVs that are smaller than what the TV is. For instance, a 57" TV stand for a 67" TV. Is this normal?

The base of the Samsungs (I have the 61A750) is a lot smaller than the rest of the TV. That was a lucky thing for me because I exchanged my 50 inch Samsung for this set (61A750). As long as the base fits, the rest of the screen will be fine, and the footprint is really small compared to the screen.

As for you very very first question, I love my 61".. The color reproduction is awesome, I don't have any geometry issues.. The only thing I can recommend to you is if you get the chance to check out your set before you take it home, do so.. I don't have any of the issues that everyone else in the owners forums seem to complain about - so I don't know how much of it is nitpicking or true.. But to be on the safe side, I would look for something that LOOKS like convergence problems (White lettering with blue, red, or cyan outlines), geometry issues (bowing, tilt), and focus issues.. my last set was last years model the 5087S and I DID have a focus issue, strangely enough that is also where I had an issue with white letters bleeding colors around them..

Thanks for the reply.

At work we have a 56" DLP in our game room and I love the way it looks. As for the base being smaller, would anyone happen to know what the base width is for the 67" LED DLP? I have a stand I might be able to use, but I would of course want to make sure first so I could have a new one ordered and set up before the TV arrived, if I ended up ordering one.

Thanks!

Can't speak for LED DLP but go LCD TV and you'll wish you never met regular DLP. That bulb thing is enormously quaint and overrated and you won't believe how much you gave up in light control. DLP in dark room IS great, if you ignore the price you pay for bulb replacement, but how can you? What you and I may have heard about LCD shortcomings just isn't true now. And the bigger you go screen size the better 1080p looks over 720. Also say goodbye to screendoor effect and cleaning dust out of hell spawn DLP hardware engineering design!

Get the LED DLP and then remove the main screen.... then you can have the TV project onto your screen. :D There are even options in the service menu to flip or rotate the image so you can correct it... ;)

j/k of course... but it's got to be possible... right?

I actually would like that info since I'm on the fence right now trying to decide what to buy.
