View Full Version : Perhaps Love is a winner
xradman 07-29-08, 12:08 AM This new release from Tai Seng is a solid winner. 2006 film from China/HK starring Takeshi Kaneshiro, Jacky Cheung, Zhou Xun, and Ji Jin-heui is a tough film to categorize. It's probably described best as love triangle story with musical numbers thrown in similar to Moulin Rouge. It won the 2006 HK film award for best cinematography and actress.
The Tai Seng disc features gorgeous picture and sound on a BD50 disc. The video is encoded in AVC and audio features both dts HD MA 7.1 (96/24) and Dolby TrueHD 7.1 in original Mandarin and DD 5.1 in English. The feature and all extra contents have English subs. The best part is that I got this movie from Family Video for ~$14 and change.

Kilian.ca 07-30-08, 09:41 PM I already have the HK R3 2-DVD Gold Box edition, the HK Mega Star BD and the sound track CD. I like the show but can't help noticing only one of the four main characters, Zhou Xun, has an authentic accent. Apparently TK refused to show his bare chest for the pool scene; even so it doesn't make sense for him to walk in the pool with everything on, including his overcoat.
The MS BD has DTS-HD MA 5.1 96/24 and DD EX 5.1 Mandarin; no English audio and that's fine with me. It has TC, SC and Eng subtitles. Picture is AVC, 1.85:1 and 107 min but it doesn't have all the extras on the DVD. I hate the Tai Seng logo and hence prefer the MS cover. There is a Tai Seng UK release too.
Can you tell me what extras the Tai Seng BD has? On Amazon.com this BD is listed as AR 1.77:1 and 97 min. which I suspect might be incorrect. Can you verify this?

Zhou Xun is the only native Mandarin speaker, so that's not surprising. Jacky Cheung is from HK, so Cantonese is his native tongue. TK is Japanese and JJH speaks Korean only. As he does not speak any Chinese, he phonetically said his lines in Mandarin.
The AR was 1.78, as I don't remember seeing any thin black lines along top and bottom of my screen as with 1.85 ratio films. I'll check on the special features and the running time.
sancho89 07-31-08, 01:32 AM TK is half Taiwanese and half Japanese I believe. He is fluent in mandarin too.

Yup, and he was born and raised in Taiwan.

Just watched Assembly last night. It is a fantastic movie. I feel as if the 2nd half of the movie was a little rushed, compared to the first but still a fantastic movie.
