Nice. According to that site we have two films with changing aspect ratios in Dec.:)

You missed the most important news though.

The Dr. Strangelove restoration on HDNet looked fantastic, so the BD will look even better without the classic HDNet DNR.

EDIT Jeez, everyone is getting worked up about DNR on these. These are Sony/Columbia titles, they don't add that crap. Sony uses some so-so transfers from time to time, but they almost all post-processing free.

Maybe some of us just want to talk about specific titles rather than sift through the pages of updates and re-updates and duplicates that are in the stickies? Maybe a sticky for those that feel the need to complain about insignificant things?

I am one who totally supports these many forum members who dislike DNR/EE, but every thread about a title out or coming out, the main theme becomes DNR talk and that is no exaggeration. :(

I know some movies are a mess, but after a few months of DNR chatter, I feel like I am listening to a broken record.

I can't wait till the issue gets resolved or at least hope it does.

so, wonder if we'll get split aspect (doubt it highly...)

I do love the Criterion LD set of Strangelove, it's got all kinds of stuff that has nothing directly to do with the film or its making (duck and cover!), and a gorgeous cover photo...

So, we'll never get Killing/Killer's Kiss on BD, methinks, but Lolita and (especially) Lyndon would be superfabboamazing.

I'm still skeptical that those making Tier lists will puke at the grain (and perhaps lack of chroma on DS), but I'm so happy that we're getting films of this caliber.

Culver City, CA (January 18, 2009) – Sony Pictures Home Entertainment invites you to re-live Stanley Kubrick’s satirical comedy Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb when it explodes on Blu-ray High-Def June 16, 2009 for the SRP $38.96. The story follows paranoid and utterly mad U.S. Air Force General Jack Ripper (Sterling Hayden) who sends bombers to destroy the U.S.S.R. which will unleash a cataclysmic series of events ultimately leading to total nuclear Armageddon.

Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is an inimitable film that demonstrates political satire at its finest. Nominated for four OscarsŪ including Best Picture[1], Best Director[2], Best Actor in a Leading Role[3] and Best Screenplay[4], this cult classic was made to be seen in high definition. Exclusive to the 45th Anniversary Special Edition Blu-ray is a “The Cold War: Picture-in-Picture (PiP) and Graphic-in-Picture (GiP) Pop-Up Trivia Track” – while the movie is playing, optional pop up graphics (GiP) provide background information on the film, and occasionally video (PiP) pops up with cast and crew commentary. Synopsis
Stanley Kubrick’s black comedy classic about an “accidental” nuclear attack received four OscarŪ nominations (including Best Picture, 1964). Convinced the Commies want to pollute America’s “precious bodily fluids,” a crazed general (Sterling Hayden) orders a nuclear air strike on the U.S.S.R. As his aide, Captain Mandrake (Peter Sellers) scrambles to unlock a recall code to prevent the bombing, the U.S. President (Sellers again) calls a drunken Soviet Premier on the hotline claiming the proposed attack is a silly mistake, while the President’s advisor (an ex-Nazi scientist Dr. Strangelove (Sellers once again) verifies the existence of a dreaded Doomsday machine – a retaliatory device designed by the Soviets to end the human race once and for all!

A few words about...™ Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned... -- in Blu-ray

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stanley Kubrick's dark comedy about high level military insanity and war during the "duck and cover" era is as brilliant today as it was in 1963, when George C. Scott noted in an interview, that he felt that it would be discussed far into the future.

Mr. Scott was right.

What he, nor anyone else, could have predicted however, in an age where original negatives were shipped across the pond (and then back) for printing, was that by the mid-1980s the original negative would be nowhere to be found.

There have been various rumors.

Mr. Kubrick was so upset that he ordered all extant elements shipped to his home outside London, where he meticulously re-photographed each frame from whatever was available...

with his Nikon.

Mr. Kubrick was so upset that he ordered all extant elements shipped to his home outside London, where upon examination of dupes, he found bits and pieces of his original negative cut in as replacement footage.

The truth of the situation is that Columbia's Asset Protection guru, Grover Crisp, ordered all extant elements shipped in for examination, and in an era during which 4k restoration was virtually unknown -- I'm aware of only one other which entailed a trio of color films -- culled through the elements, and moved meticulously forward with the necessary frame by frame restoration, of which we are now the Blu-ray beneficiary.

Acknowledging the fact that the OCN no longer is available, the results are as close to Mr. Kubrick's original intent as humanly and technologically possible.

Gorgeous black & white, with a clean, dirt-free, stable image, and every bit of original resolution as captured by the protection elements.

Dr. Strangelove is one of the most important and entertaining films made in our century plus of the cinema.

I've seen it in virtually every incarnation over the years, and generally (except for the very first screening) went away less than pleased. This Blu-ray has me smiling again.

Formatted in 1.66:1 aspect ratio, it gets something right that over the decades seemed to get continually overlooked. The proper framing of the B-52 Stratofortress in flight. These huge aircraft -- 8 engines, 159 feet long, 40 feet high, and with a wing span of 185 feet (many of which are still in service, and will remain in service) are magnificent in flight. For many of the shots in Strangelove, they were captured from wingtip to wingtip, but for whatever reason some of these shots seemed to have been continuously cropped in either printing or video replication.

They're back, and framed to perfection.

There is only one Dr. Strangelove, and it's a must own for anyone who even has an inkling that they love the cinema. Not to own this film can lead to the loss of one's cinephile license.

As an aside, as I noted, while the aspect ratio of Dr. Strangelove is 1.66:1, the aspect ratio of the B-52 is slightly wider, even wider than Ultra-Panavision 70, at 8.56:1

Dr. Strangelove on Blu-ray is the most perfect version of the film that one will see, and I can't not give it the unusual rating of:

Extremely Highly Recommended!

(Dr. Strangelove is encoded for regions A, B and C)

Methinks you missed an obvious joke. 8.56:1 is sure as shinola not "slightly" wider than 1.66:1. No, the aspect ratio will be 1.66:1 throughout.

First BD in a while that is a must buy for me.
As a Kubrick fan, this is my favorite and truly is timeless.
Brilliant casting, set design, lighting and everything is made better
because it's in beautiful B&W.
Very few movies capture the essence of their time as Dr. Strangelove does in such a black manner while being laugh-out-loud hilarious.

I saw this on HDNET for the first time just last year. It looked amazing. The movie is fantastic. I still think it's awesome that Kubrick shot the little soldier bits hand-held, way before Spielberg and Mann made it popular for shoot outs.

With all of Robert Harris' comments (in jest and otherwise) about aspect ratio on this release, I'm surprised he made no direct mention of the multi-aspect nature of previous video editions and addressed the 'controversy' about this movie's proper framing.

A straight 1.66:1, if well-framed, sounds good to me, but I want to see it first-hand (and I will!).
