I'm considering replacing our 7 yr old Mits 46807. I'm about to get an AppleTV which outputs at 720p. I have calibrated it the best I can with the Avia DVD and its been a great set, but...

1) the manual states it accepts 1080i or 480p. AppleTV likes 720p and 540p from what I understand
2) there is only 1 HD input so I either need a receiver with component switching (easy enough) or put the money towards a TV with at least 2 HD inputs

I know the 46807 was a great set in its day and held its own for some time. How do the latest LCDs compare in sharpness, shadow detail, etc? I hate when shadows/hair go straight to black (like all the display sets at BB and CC!). What about the Samsung HL50A650 50" DLP? I've seen them advertised for just over $1000 lately.
