View Full Version : Pointing projector at ceiling
danparker276 07-29-08, 07:30 PM I'm pretty lazy and want to lay in bed and watch TV on the ceiling.
Every projector I've gotten says don't tilt the projector more than 15 degrees.
I'm going to buy a new projector for this, but I'm I also going to have a buy a mirror to shine the image up on the ceiling. I don't really want to experiment and have the lamp die on me after 5 hours.
antwon412 07-29-08, 07:41 PM ooooooookay
let us know i guess
danparker276 07-30-08, 02:14 PM But does anyone know why you can't point the projector up? I'm guessing it's bad for the lamp.
antwon412 07-30-08, 02:20 PM are you going to mount it on the floor? or on the wall angled towards the ceiling?
to be honest, i dont know if it would really be that comfortable.
Sheridan1952 07-30-08, 02:55 PM I believe it has to do with proper air flow for cooling and ventilation.
danparker276 07-30-08, 03:11 PM I'm wondering if it would be comfortable too. Can't really tell until I try it out. And the air flow theory is probably correct. So I'd probably have to mount it on a book case, side wall, or hang it from something. Hmm, I'll have to work on that then. I wonder if some projectors have sensors that detect if it's gone verticle and shut off though.

wow, that is lazy.. by the time you get around to mounting it at least the price of the projector will come down ;)
danparker276 07-30-08, 03:47 PM Well my girlfriend wants it. I wouldn't mind trying it.
reconlabtech 07-30-08, 03:55 PM Sounds like fun. I'm sure a mirror combination would work, just have to figure out where to put the PJ and the mirror(s). I'm trying to figure it out myself now that it's stuck in my head!

im guessing it's to keep the fan bearings from wearing out too fast. if they were out of their physical operating range (if there is such a thing) they might wear faster. without the fan the pj would heat up too fast.
dont know for sure,tho.
Sheridan1952 07-30-08, 04:50 PM Projectors don't have angle sensors, what they do have is heat sensors. If the air flow stops or is restricted, the projector overheats and shuts down.
The fan bearings don't really care what position they're in.
Sparehead2 07-30-08, 05:16 PM You could get a LED pocket projector to try it out.
Wouldn't have to worry about heat or fans.
TF Ghost 07-31-08, 09:49 AM He probably wouldn't be able to see the image either...
danparker276 07-31-08, 03:06 PM This is the response I got from infocus:
Hello Dan,
Thank you for contacting InFocus Technical Support.
In response to your query, I would like to let you know that InFocus does not has this option with it’s projectors.
InFocus projectors are design to work in a specific position.
It should be perpendicular to the vertical screen,
Thank you for choosing InFocus.
TF Ghost 07-31-08, 03:08 PM Nice english! I'm guessing that came straight from India.

I saw a front projector at a local showroom that had been set up to project from the rear. The owner showed me the projector and the mirror behind the screen. I supposed he would have skipped using a mirror if he had the throw distance, but he did not. The image looked great. It is possible to get a great image in spite of using a mirror.

Right? At least they could've done a grammar and spelling check before sending it.
TF Ghost 07-31-08, 03:30 PM ^^Just shut up man! Some people aren't technically inclined!

So who gets to be on top first? :p
mcpryon 08-01-08, 04:57 AM So who gets to be on top first? :p
I think I'd rather be on bottom first...though I suppose you could work it so you both get to watch TV at the same time.
hmm...
I tried this briefly(3-4 tv episodes) and the biggest problem everytime was that after 5 minutes I'd fall asleep:rolleyes:
And btw I just tilted it up without regard to if it was good for the pj or not:o
He might be wanting it for training films. :)
