i have the onkyo 605 and i'm trying to use the zone2 out in another room just to run a couple bookshelf speakers...is there any way (without climbing behind there and changing the audio ouputs every time) i can output audio in digital AND analog at the same time through my ps3 or 360?

i tried running the hdmi to the tv and then running it out the "audio out" jacks on the tv and back into the receiver but it didn't work...i thought it would break down the signal but the tv must only use the audio outs that are already analog also.

any help is appreciated.

For every multi-zone receiver I have ever seen, you need the analog inputs connected to your sources in order to get audio in Zone 2/ 3 etc. So, if you have a cable box, for example, you would need your HDMI or Component/digital audio cables connected for your main room PLUS you need the analog left/ right audio RCA's connected to the receiver on the appropriate inputs. You'll have to do this for every source you may want to distribute through the home. Cable/Satellite box, CD player, phono, etc.

Does the PS3/360 not output both digital and analog at the same time already? Have you tried it and assigned the analog inputs you used correctly to Zone2?

So he can use the analog output for Zone2 while using the digital output for the main zone.

wanted to see if anyone was doing this currently, i'll run the wires tomorrow and report back...

crap i just remembered, i dont' have my 605 as it's being repaired...so i won't really know until i get it back if you can run 2 types of audio out at the same time...i guess it wouldn't matter if i was say, running the 5.1 through the 360, a quick input configuration in the ps3 settings could change the output to the analog plugs i'm thinking if i'm invisioning the ps3 setup menu right...

Consoles may be different, though.

so i finally tried this out...and you have to actually go into the ps3 setting and switch the output to red/white interconnects...so you can only have one audio output at once :( oh well, not too big of a hassle i guess.

You could always buy a Toslink splitter (cheap) and a digital audio to stereo analog audio converter (not so cheap but look around). Split the PS3 optical out. Send one the the 605 in 5.1 mode and the send the other to the converter and then on to the second zone inputs on your 605.

You should be able to do the whole thing for under $70.

i'm not using the toslink as my primary audio, i'm using straight hdmi to hdmi. i have an old splitter out in my garage from an old toslink install and it worked like crap but then again i think i paid about 5 dollars for it so i'm not sure what i was expecting.

i'll deal with the going into the settings of the ps3 i guess...i dont' like having another bundle of wires behind the setup either but oh well...
