The HD-DVD has a Dolby TrueHD track, so I don't see a reason to get the Blu-ray. It's not an upgrade.

American Gangster, Casino, Eastern Promises all from Universal in October. Could they be releasing a BD Gangster Sampler pack?

Ditto! Too many good releases I don't have coming up to spend my money on. The HD DVD will due as it is excellent.

The HD DVD that I have is absolutely amazing quality wise. No need to upgrade, but its nice to see Blu only customers will be getting this great disc. Now, if they'd release Hot Fuzz on Blu as well, you guys would have the cream of the crop.

It's not a combo. That's and upgrade to me :) I don't trust combos.

Hell Yeah.:) I like the Uni Packs. $12 BDs of good material, so nice.

I guess Uni is printing everything that was on HD-DVD.

I want a sci-fi pack by Dec. With Children of Men, King Kong, and Serenity.

Early review is up out here http://www.highdefdiscnews.com/?p=5731

Region A - I think Universal might have Region Locked this BD as the overseas distribution rights is held by other studios.

Why yes, salivating is the appropriate word.

Might pick this one up. But I do kind of have mixed feelings about it. I agree that it is a bit too penisey, but I like Viggo Mortensen and it had a pretty good story. The first time I watched this was on HD DVD the day WB announced it was going BD exclusive.

I doubt that the BR is region locked. I just had a look on other reviews listed at highdefdisnews.com like Deception. According to the review it should be region A. Well it is not. The same goes with HULK (Ang Lee Version).

We Americans seem to have very strange reactions to male nudity in films.

Case in point: When I saw 28 Days Later at the theater, the crowd howled with laughter during the opening shots of the ill character lying naked in the hospital bed. I mean, the guy was lying there sick, and this crowd thought his "hog" was the funniest thing they'd ever seen. I seriously think this particular crowd would have guffawed at the nudity of concentration camp victims in Schindler's list.

I dunno, to me the nudity in Eastern Promises lends a certain vulnerability and a primal/animalistic feeling to the entire fight scene. Believe me, seeing Vigo's "hog" isn't my idea of a good time either, but I didn't find the scene objectionable. Lord knows my wife has to put up with enough T&A in movies and she doesn't think twice about it.

I agree; that scene is very effective. I also agree that some people's sole focus on Mortensen's genitalia is quite puzzling to say the least. If it bothers people that much in terms of affecting their masculinity, then that scene can be offset by the presence of the lovely Naomi Watts.

EP is easily one of the best looking HD DVDs in my collection. It just has a stunningly natural, realistic sense of detail and depth.

A made this exact argument once (Shows how intense Viggo is as he kills two armed, fully clothed assassins even though he's completely naked), and now a bunch of my friends on campus think I'm gay :p

Anyone who thinks you'd have to be gay to appreciate the artistic intent of that scene probably should stick to lighter fare, like "Dude, Where's My Car?"

:) The scene is too intense to be distracted by the nudity. Of course my wife likes it more than me, but when she goes too far, I threaten her with Mulholland Drive;)

Unlike the nudity in Eastern Promises, the action in Mulholland Drive is borderline softcore. I could *understand* straight women finding that particular scene to be a bit much... But hey, my wife watched Mulholland Drive like a pro. I guess I'm lucky that way. :-)

I picked it up during lunch today but I'm still at work and haven't had a chance to look at it.

Here's the DVD Beaver review: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews41/eastern_promises_blu-ray.htm

Hard to tell without 1080p captures but there doesn't appear to be any DNR or edge enhancement so it'll likely be identical to the HD-DVD as this one is on a BD-25.

It distracts in the scene. Once you notice it, you either 1) try not to notice it, or 2) that is all you notice. If Borat was in the background, it would be equally distracting - you could either pay attention to him, or try and ignore him.

Fact is, it's mere shock value, which is what people fall back on when they run out of ideas, or want to generate buzz. The movie didn't need it in either case, it was quite good on it's own.

I disagree, and I imagine the director would as well. The fact that it was shocking to so many people in this particular culture says more about us than about the artistic intent of the scene.

In the preceding, you might want to replace the word "you" with the word "I."

Is it truly fact or simply your theory? How exactly would you know?

Are you opposed to all nudity in film or just male nudity?

What does it say, that we don't go to movies to see nude wrestling? "Artistic intent" - thanks for the laugh.

That this is CONSTANTLY what discussion about this movie comes down to, I'd say I've got it right on - artistic intent, shyeah. It's provocative by design, and not for "art". This isn't the statue of David, the "artistic" value is dubious at best.

Is it truly fact or simply your theory? How exactly would you know?
What do you think? Thanks for the vapid inquiry.

I am not "opposed" to nudity. Is that fact or just your theory?

"Artistic value" - man, that gets funnier every time I see it.
