Hi everyone, I just joined avs. I'm trying to get my surround sound installed because I just purchased a house. The previous owner left older model bose cube speakers in both the living room and bonus room. The bonus will be used for movies, gaming, sports, etc, so i'm removing all the bose stuff and replacing with my receiver and speakers in there. The bose sound like crap in my opinion. However, the living room is more for show, so I'll leave bose cubes in there.
Anyway, the speaker brackets that the cubes were mounted on won't allow my speakers to screw on. The bolt on the bracket is too small (4mm instead of 5mm I believe) for my speakers. My question is this, does anyone know where I can get a 5mm adapter to accomodate my speakers? I have taken pictures to illustrate the part/adapter I need. Calling bose did not help....they say they don't have these. They think I have bose UB-5 or UB-6 speaker brackets. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jason

after looking at the pics a bit longer, i'm assuming the part i have the arrow pointing to isn't ridged for the purpose of unscrewing in that picture, it was for unscrewing it from the actual bracket, yes? i think you'd have a hell of a time finding a part like that without either
a. getting a new bolt head welded onto the original peice
or
b. just taking down the brackets and getting a new set of universal speaker mounts to put in their place...they can be had for 20 dollars a pair or less...

Yes, you're pretty much correct. That part does not unscrew. And actually, that part doesn't even unscrew from the bracket on the wall. There are 2 set screws that hold this piece in place. When they're unscrewed it just slides out. You can actually see where one of the screws contacts the white paint and made a mark. I was hoping bose would say "Oh yeah, you just need this same part in size 5mm." But no luck so far. :(

knowing bose they'd probably charge just as much as you'd pay for the new set of brackets for that little peice

A tread adapter will work, although you may have trouble buying them in small lots. It looks like this M6 male to M4 female. They are made in metric-metric and metric to English sizes. These things seem to be a specialty item not an everday hardware store item. If you are in the US you may be more likely to find them at an ACE store than a big box store (I have been surprised to find some very unusual metric fasteners at ACE).

Note too that in the behind the times US, you increasing find SAE sized fasteners that made a hair off spec so as to interchangeable with the closest metric size.
Alternately but it is hard to know from the photos you might just find that the head of an M5 machine scew can be locked into the base by the two in-hex screws or by filing two flats on the thread area

Guys, thanks for the input. I have not yet decided what to do for sure. I will probably see what ACE hardware has to offer. Other than that I may just have to bite the bullet and purchase/install new mounts. I was just trying to save some time and money. Thanks again.

don't forget if you get a tread adapter like the one mentioned it's going to stick that much further out of the bracket...
