What I dug up from HDD
"Remastered in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and DTS-MA 5.1 Surround audio, extras include a complete London gig, plus additional Killburn footage.
Retail is $29.98."
No Brainer. Here's the Set List:
I Can't Explain
Substitute
Baba O'Riley
My Wife
Behind Blue Eyes
Dreaming From The Waist
Pinball Wizard
I'm Free
Tommy's Holiday Camp
Summertime Blues
Shakin' All Over
My Generation
Join Together
Who Are You
Won't Get Fooled Again
Now if we can get a few BDs with some Metal with lossless audio I'l be happy. Double-bass pedal will shake the foundation.
No way will I complain about getting stuff from The Rolling Stones and The Who, very cool.

OMG! this is F'ing great! The holy grail for who fans! turn it up!
sharkshark 07-31-08, 12:51 PM I saw the Amazing Journey doc projected with a Christie 2K, and asked the filmmakers whether or not it was going to be released on HD (it's a Universal Music title). They said "I hope so...", and that was a year ago. The DVD release came out, with no sign of HD.
This being the first Who title is a happy thing indeed, in that it's hopefully the first of many. I could use Tommy with 5.0 Lossless, and the extras from the Region 2 SE (I only own that 3 times on DVD).
I'd also really, really (REALLY) like the damn Quadrophenia SACD/DVD-A release, but, alas, I think that ship has sailed... I'm already whining about this in the Surround thread, so no need for more bandwidth on my little ramblings... :)

Malcolm_B 07-31-08, 06:38 PM Keith Moon! YES!
cnikirk 07-31-08, 08:52 PM Very nice, and the set list is impressive. I'm glad to have entwistle's My Wife.
sharkshark 07-31-08, 10:00 PM the show is likely to be a wee bit dodgy, as Keith's going to be stapled to his stool to keep him aloft ("he's not dead, he's just resting!"), but what the hell! :)

Yeah....when I saw them in San Francisco (a lifetime ago) he only made it through about 3 songs before he 'fell ill' and they brought a substitute in....

I was at the same show. Supposedly, someone put animal tranquilizer in his brandy backstage before the show and he didn't last very long. Later, they performed an "apology" concert at a very small, more intimate venue (Winterland) which was fantastic. No matter where one sat it seemed like the band was just a few feet away.
fyi - I just noticed that this airs on PBS in HD next week (starting 9/7). Will be interesting to see how it looks (although, the Seattle PBS station downconverts everything to 720p - at least if it looks good here, it should look better on blu-ray)
bassmonkeee 11-20-08, 05:05 PM Did anyone else pick this up this week? I'm watching the 1969 London Coliseum concert which I am happy to say is also in HD (from 16mm source). Both concerts are fairly amazing if you are a Who fan.
Grain Haters beware!
I particularly like how they have Keith Moon with subtitles when he's busting Pete Townsend's balls. :D
If you were excited about this coming out, go buy it now. For $20, you can't beat it.

I'd love to get some of the other "classic" concerts...Tanglewood, Isle of Wight, and anything else from the early history of the group.
shadowrage 11-20-08, 05:49 PM I ordered mine form DD luckily it was in stock and there shipping is so much better this year. I should have it Monday at the latest.
How is the sound quality? And can someone post specs?
Panic 66 11-20-08, 06:07 PM I also ordered from DD Tuesday morning to get the 25% off and it shipped yesterday. Can wait to check it out and for $15.00 it was an easy blind buy.

Right about the grain. First thought in my head. There will surely be some complaints about that.
Kilburn has pretty decent quality overall. Not bad but the show itself isn't the greatest they did in the 70's. The 69 show which is included as an extra is from 16mm which is often out of focus and has various other problems. It's a killer show though.
Overall an absolute must for any WHO fans but probably not for someone who just wants a good looking concert blu-ray.
Loved the subtitles as well. Moon is just about impossible to understand.
I just watched the 69 bonus show and the PQ is very rough. AQ is not much better as it definately shows its age. It is a bright sounding mix to my ears. I am very spoiled by modern releases as they are tech far superior:(
Watched a few tracks off the Killburn show and the sound and PQ are considerably better, but still show there age. Everything is clean and clear sounding, but just has that distant 70's recording type sound (I listen to a LOT of 70's live material being that I am a BIG Deadhead). Again, I am just spoiled by the John Mayer, NIN, Jewel, Dave and Tim, etc.....shows from a tech/time standpoint. I am sure fans of the Who will appreciate this though for what it is. If it were the Dead on BR, I would probably be more positive and forgiving:p Just my thoughts. Glad I rented this.
I will say having said all this, that it was awesome to see this band live and the performances themselves are VERY good IMO. Lots of energy. I am going to watch the rest of the Killburn show tonight with the GF.
Edit: After watching the rest of the Kilburn set it is not as distant sounding as I thought previously and sounds realy good for the most part considering its age especialy. I think I would go B or B- on the AQ for the Kilburn portion(I rated it tier 1 in the audio thread).
PlanetAVS 11-20-08, 08:10 PM Picked this up as well:
Kilburn show quality: B+.......The group performs very well. I didn't think Moon was as sloppy as other reviews I've read.
Kilburn pic quality: B........Very good, just don't be expecting something on the level of a modern production using HD cameras
Kilburn sound quality: B+.......decent mix and clarity
1969 Coliseum show: D for picture quality....pretty much unwatchable in my opinion. Good thing it is just a bonus item........sound quality is a C, barely worth listening to....especially with the occasional dropouts.
ps. The Police DVD is phenomenal for picture quality, sound quality and performance.
westgate 11-20-08, 09:12 PM my netflix blu-ray copy came yesterday; havent watched it yet. will buy soon, also.
musicfann 11-21-08, 09:10 AM Does ANYONE feel we will see MORE of these 70's (or earlier) concerts ?
Even from this or other artists ?
I feel that "IF" they are there in The Vault's, we will.

Yep I'm hoping there are more out there.
Will2007 11-21-08, 10:40 AM Great set list. My Blu-ray copy arrived on Wednesday, but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. It's probably part of my plans for tonight. When I heard about this being released, it was one of those purchases that I didn't even have to think about. I knew instantly that I had to have it.
N.B. Forrest 11-21-08, 06:01 PM I'd love to get some of the other "classic" concerts...Tanglewood, Isle of Wight, and anything else from the early history of the group.
Wouldn't it be great if the 1970 Leeds concert had been filmed as well as recorded?
shadowrage 11-22-08, 05:01 PM What a great disc. The sound is much better than what I was expecting from something from the 70s. It does sound a bit thin and I could do with a bit more bass, but overall it's great.
The disc has 3.5hours of content. And guess what? All of the audio is in MA, all 208 minutes. Take that Warner. And I got all this for $15 awesome.
The 2 extra performances don't look great though, the 69 concert was in a dumpster and the sound isn't exactly top notch. But still the 69 concert got a high bitrate AVC encode, and in all honesty a youtube quality flash video probably would have been enough. The other one is MPEG 2, but still has MA audio.
/sigh, the worst part is this more proof of how lazy and lackluster Warner's releases are compared to everyone else - even the little guy.
Partyslammer 11-22-08, 10:42 PM For a release like this, it's kind of pointless harping on the a/v quality, especially for the '69 show. It basically is what it is considering the sources and their age. However, what sells this release is the performances. The early live version of "Who Are You" is amazing and while Moon is clearly past his prime, he was still miles above just about any other rock n' roll drummer of his time and a joy to watch throughout the show.
IMO, well worth picking up.
T.B.
audiotomb 11-24-08, 08:43 PM watched it this weekend
the kilburn material doesn't pop off the screen but is good
I like when Townsend says it's been a waste, cameramen go home
they should have added the shepperton reshoots seen in Kids are Alright as Bonus material
maybe we'll get the royal albert hall who show dvd from a few years ago
Isle of Wight with some Quad / Who's Next live footage would be nice
no kenny jones please
now if Zep would release the 02 footage blu ray
and Gabriel would release his stuff in high def
bassmonkeee 11-24-08, 08:53 PM If I never hear the word 'pop' to describe HD material again, it'll be too soon.
I'll be curious to see the new Hendrix releases coming out tomorrow. I think I'll go with Monterey.

I was thinking the same thing. Supposedly, the director was not happy with Won't Get Fooled Again and made them reshoot. I had heard Townshend was pissed they had to redo the song.

GOD, it would be awesome, as they say !
Tell me...is there any record of it or of ANY of the LIFEHOUSE concerts, my friend ?
Panic 66 11-25-08, 05:10 PM I just received my copy from DD yesterday but only got to listen to a few parts. I video quality was about what I expected and seemed to be a little better than "The Song Remains The Same" HD DVD I own. I thought the sound was pretty good and had a lot of base when using Dynamic EQ on my Denon 789. That intro on "Who Are You" was sick!:D

A lot of bass? I have my sub equalized flat and running a few db's hot over the mains and I hardly got any bass from this show. Does dynamic EQ boost the sub FR over the mains? I can see this giving you more bass, but it would not be representative of the true mix.
Panic 66 11-25-08, 06:42 PM I will give it a listen again tonight if I get a chance and see what it sounds like without Dynamic EQ. I was surprised by the base I was hearing since I had already seen someones comment about the lack of base. I have only had this receiver for about 2 months and I am not really sure how Dynamic EQ works but it is an option along with Dynamic Volume once the Audyssey calibration is done. When listening to music I use Dynamic EQ only without Dynamic Volume enabled. All I know is it sounds really good with the BIC Acoustech speakers and sub that I am using.
