No, but it may happen more frequently with feature rich discs. I think 2.3 gave you BD-Live, Profile 2.0 features for the PS3. The PS3 is still the darling of the industry since it's so versatile and in the most homes as a stealth Blu-ray player.
I hope this is true. As I also use a PS3 but don't have high speed. So all updates have been done via games. I haven't purched a game since GTA IV. So if movies are now including the updates that would be cool. The one thing I hated about the A1 was having to get update discs now and then.
I have 21 and will try it tonight...

let me know if your copy does the update mine was a blockbuster rental but that should not matter.i to hope movies start having the updates but i do not like the fact it told me i HAD to update it should give you a choice.THANK YOU
Providing updates on BD-ROM movie discs is an official, BDA-sanctioned option - there is a mechanism and procedure for doing so that is outlined in the BDA specifications. You can also author the disc so that it won't play unless the update it carries is applied to the targeted player. However, it is totally up to the player manufacturer to convince a disc authoring studio that adding a player-specific update file is a good idea. No one from a studio wants a call from an irate customer saying, "your movie disc broke my player."
I wouldn't expect to see this a lot unless it's a Sony Pictures disc with a Sony player update.
I just tryed this with the copy I got at walmart on my PS3 and sure enough the update screen came up.
So I can also confirm 21 has a system update for the PS3. This is very cool.

It's cool, but it's not a very effective way to get updates. 2.30 for example was the update that added DTS-MA decoding to the PS3, and it was released back in, what, April? Several other enhancements to video playback on the PS3 have been included in updates released since then; the current version is 2.42.
It's pretty easy to download updates and install them via a jump drive or a CD-ROM. And IMO people need to accept that almost anything with a microprocessor in it will need to be updated periodically. I just finished updating the firmware in a lighting contoller in an exhibit at the museum where I work. Almost everything in my current HT system uses updatable firmware: The Sharp HDTV, the PS3, the Toshiba HD-DVD player, the Pioneer universal player, the TiVo, the Comcast/Moto HD DVR, the Onkyo AVR... it's just a fact of modern life. We don't get bent out o shape when our iPods get updated; why all this resistance to PS3 updates?
All BD players are by definition Internet appliances.
