I was thinking of just posting this in stumlad's thread but given the controversy over this particular title I figure it deserves special attention.

As we know, the Blu-ray encode is a direct port from the HD DVD. I'd still like to get my hands on the 164MB WMV-HD trailer (http://msmvps.com/blogs/chrisl/archive/2005/06/12/52431.aspx) if anyone has it!

Note that I added black bars to the trailer in order to make the comparison easier.

First let me say that from what I saw, this encode doesn't have any big macroblocking issues like V for Vendetta has. When I saw blocking during the initial shot with thousands of bats I was worried:

But thankfully I didn't see any after that. That said, I wasn't sitting close enough during the second half of the movie anyway.

The DU test thread declared 720p detail level which is wrong, it's definitely in the 1080p range. Just shows how important it is to pick frames that will actually display it.

The contrast and color mucking in the trailer is godawful, of course, so ignore that.

My comments and pics that the Golden Compass trailer might just be EE'd were ignored, so I'm not sure I should bother here. Sharpening the BD shows just how little grain and how much compression blocking lies under the surface. And no matter what I do I can't EE the tiny details in Morgan Freeman's collar back.

My OPINION is that Batman Begins was DNR'd, to reduce the compression strain. Meanwhile the trailer has plenty of grain/noise along with an ugly sort of edge-stretching sharpening and its own compression smearing.

How about anyone else?

Sorry buddy. IMO the caps from HD trailer still looks better than the actual BD though I am not sure if this is the same one as demo-ed in the Sony showrooms. The subtle grittiness, film grain and sharpness exhibited by the HD trailer is grossly missing in the actual BD.

The problem is that any tweaks that were done to the trailer, were done before any compression (or heavy compression)

If you try to tweak the BD the same way, it will not show the same image since any lossy compression avoid throwing bits on areas you cant see. (The entire point of lossy compression)

So its very hard to compare how accurate the BD is to the source when you compare to the tweaked trailer.

Interesting... I still believe the DNR/filtering/whatever was done for the DVD and that the HD DVD/blu-ray are victims of HD master re-use. Even at 8 mbps, extra detail is seen on the trailer. So even with average bit rate of 12-13, the HD DVD/blu-ray would have been able to handle it -- maybe with some problems, but not enough to justify the "filtering".

The above explanation holds good for the Videophile or the trained eyes community who possess a certain level of tolerance.

Nothing too interesting, it's obviously sourced from the same master files but with the contrast range destroyed. The BD shot has macroblocking not present in the promo though. Meanwhile another shot featuring the Batmobile showed the opposite result.

Notice how the movie encode's black bars are off-kilter as some complained about, while the promo is even.

After watching most of the movie again at a better distance with PiP on, every scene with the flurry of bats exhibits macroblocking to some degree. Can we please drop the statement that this encode looks identical to the master?

On another note, anyone care to check out the conversation between Rachel and Bruce at the 28-minute mark in the film? The grain on their faces looks really unnatural and splotchy to me.

It will probably still go even though it is wrong. Will be nice if they do a re-encode giving us a reference quality disc eventually.

Maybe we should just put a lid on it for three years until the special edition trilogy box set is released, then we will see who was right.

It will probably still go even though it is wrong. Will be nice if they do a re-encode giving us a reference quality disc eventually.

Will? Well that is up to if they ever do a ne encode and how they do it (could be worse even)..

Could it look better? Absolutely. It looked better in the theater, certainly no macro-blocking in the theater as well.

I would say that the compression arftifacts in BB is much lower then most other HDMs out there, and almost impossible to detect during normal playback. Its much easier to find them on stills.

If anyone avoids buying this movie because of artifacts can give up HDM, because I dont think there are any artifact free HDM out there.

Now that we are switching gears.....I didn't have the ability to pause it in the theater and I didn't watch it frame by frame on my HD DVD player either.

Agreed that it is definitely worth owning, just no need to double dip unless they provide a reference transfer sometime in the future (not holding my breath). I agree on the second part as well, even in theaters.

I think you can copy it to a flash drive or usb external hard drive. If i remember correctly, you can even choose to download it directly to external media. Note that it puts a folder called VIDEO on your drive.

Right now it's impossible for me to connect my PS3 to the net, heh. So I can't check it out unless there's a way to download straight to PC. Oh well.

I could not find the Casino Royale trailer on PSN. I found Quantum of Solace trailer which is also 1.85:1 (doesnt look as good as Casino Royale BD looked).

I'm guessing that Sony removes trailers after a certain time period.
