View Full Version : Best DVD Database for keeping track of your owned/viewed movies?

I was wondering what others use or recommend for keeping track of their DVD movie library as well as their watched DVDs they rent? I have seen some DVD sites for such a thing and wondered what everyone uses or likes most? I have a LOT of DVDs both SD and Blu-Ray that I own, but I also want to put check marks in boxes for those I have rented too. Any thoughts on this and where/what to use?

Thanks.

I recommend www.dvdspot.com. Its free, its easy to organize/categorize and it supports all formats (Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, DVD, etc.) including obscure DVD covers from Full Screen versions that came at the dawn of the DVD era as well as multi-region overseas covers. Check this page/databse I created for my mom to keep track of the DVD/HD-DVD movies I've sent her (including the one's she has seen so far): http://www.dvdspot.com/list.php?member=dad1153&list=owned&display=100&sortby=year. I've organized it chronologically (from oldest movie to newest) but check the box on the upper left that can change the order by other criteria.

DVD Profiler (www.invelos.com) is way better than anything from any competitor imho.

DVD Profiler is only free with unlimited functionality up to 50 discs, with more than 50 discs it has limited features only.
You will need to get a paid license to retain unlimited features for collections of unlimited size.

Also recommend Movie Collector (http://www.collectorz.com/). You can try before you buy. I would most definitely get a CueCat bar code scanner (real cheap on eBay). You can find the UPC (bar code numbers) on several sites for movies that you have rented. Using the UPC will gather and import title information for you.

I have and continue to use FileExpress (DOS program) for more than 23 years. I have databases for Blu-ray, DVD, D-Theater, Viewed movies, Electronic Parts, etc. A dBASE file is exported from each of these databases and in turn linked to a TAB sheet in Quattro Pro. This allows me to see all my information just by clicking a tab.

Good ol' Excel spreadsheet for me. Easiest to use, customize, share, whatever. Plus if I don't like it, I can delete it and start a new one. That way I can go through my whole collection again, which is always fun....

Thanks for all the replies and great tips. I checked out DVD Profiler but it's Windows only and I use a 2008 Mac Pro so it won't work for my needs. I am checking out the other software mentioned but a web based solution may work best. I won't touch Excel because I want full software already done like on the web sites and programs without all the work. What I need seems to be what the software and web sites do already and much better.

Thanks again.

DVDSpot is shutting down.:(

On Wednesday October 15th DVDSpot will be closed permanently. This decision was made to allow us to focus on other great web properties. We sincerely appreciate everyone's contribution to the DVDSpot community and hope you enjoyed the free services it provided. We understand many people will not want to lose their personal collection data, so we remind you that you can export that data to file by going to Membership Tools while logged in and clicking the Export to File button. This will create a file with all movies in your Owned and Watched lists. Also keep in mind the editor system for approving DVD additions and edits has been disabled, so no new or edited DVDs will be added.

I need an alternative online DVD database. DVD Profiler is good, but does not have the online capabilities (to make additions and alterations from any net connected computer) that DVD Spot had...

I tried several of these and found them all too slow and clunky.

I am using a simple Excel spreadsheet. It is fast to input, compatible with what I was using some years ago, and flexible for the future. I can program it to do anything I want.

Some of these programs access some on-line databases, will look up UPC codes and packaging photos, but I don't need that and it was just to slowwwww.

I went with chasingthefrog.com. It is alot like dvdspot- easy, quick and free. It is also powered by Amazon, so maybe it will stay around. So far I like it. It only took about two hours to reenter all of my titles (at least the ones I had in dvdspot)- I still have about 100 more to go.

I really like the online concept.

Mine is access.... I did it a looong time ago and I mean a loooooong time ago.

I'd like a system that can use the bar code and retrieve everything as far as info goes from the net. It would have to support Laserdisc?

Any of these products auto-recognize a DVD when you insert it and offer to add it to your catalogue?

I would like a solution that is better integrated with VMC. I have used and like MyMovies, however the features are pretty lightweight.

I don't really get the data. Back in like 1987 or so, I just did a quick simple thing to catalog my laserdiscs. It only has title field and a field for the media type.

I sort it alpha.

Changing it is pretty tough. Close to 2000 titles.

I seem to remember a bar code system that would handle all media types, but maybe I dreamed it. Any system that can't do the laserdiscs is probably out for me. I mean I can find the titles the way it is for screening easy enough.

There are web services you can call? There are open source projects out there that you can download and check out how to do it. Check out Microsoft's VB.Net Express development environment, I believe one of the sample applications you could download was a dvd library.

You are right it doesn't interface with any media center. The problem with an auto-update would be one of copyright I guess. Where does the data comes from? You can't use IMDB data (data pumping is forbidden per the EULA) without their permission (which is why DVDProfiler doesn't. They have their own user validated database).

With Visual Studio Express 2005 you did get a template for a movie database that use to get its data from IMDB but last week I installed the 2008 version (.Net 3.5) and that application isn't there anymore. I had to search the web for it. Also, there was a library of function (DLL) available for data mining IMDB at some point but devellopment seem to have stop and I can't find it anymore.

I tried building my own database for personnal use from the DB dump of IMDB but the information in those text file have a weird, non consistent format that makes it hard to import it into mySQL or another DB. And the task of rebuilding the link and index is daunting to say the least.

As an ex-DvDspot user I was almost heartbroken with the announcement that they would be closing. I have since moved my collection to DvD-Profiler and I am happy so far except that I cannot find a way to separate my Blu-Ray, HD-DVD's, and DVD's in my collection. Am I missing something or is there a setting or plug-in that makes this easy to do?

Yes, Movie Collector does. There are fields for Location (for one or more carousels) and Slot number.

There are several printing options in Movie Collector. I export the data that I want (very easy to do) from Movie Collector. Then I use WordPerfect to print the data. A macro was created that will retrieve a template that was made and update the links to the data in WordPerfect. Part of a page follows as seen in WordPerfect:

Hey guys,

We've been working on DVDCorral (.com) for a while, which is an online DVD database. It does allow entry via bar code scanners and is completely free.

The site is currently in Beta, so we're constantly improving it. Now's a great time to make suggestions as we're working hard to hear and implement them. I saw someone comment on the ability to specify the location of a disc (like in a DVD changer) and a couple of folks mentioned tracking when / how often they watch a DVD.

I'd love to try to incorporate those into the site and see if there are any other suggestions folks have. Currently, it tracks users' DVD collections as well as who you lent a movie to.

Check out the site, setup and account, and let us know how we can make it more useful for you!

TIA,
geis

Ive used all sorts of programs in the past but I switched to a much better and simpliar method

MICROSOFT EXCEL!!!!

Thats right. Unlimited customization, easily organzied in a list, all fields can be sorted and tagged. I add in each movie when I get it, takes like 20 seconds, much faster then shifting through hundreds of versions that people have posted into those movie program databases.

Suppose I feel like watching a comedy made after 1980 and rated 7.0 or higher. Well I can search that extreamly easily and find the movie I want to watch. IMDB links for every movie too for more details. Of course you can also add catagories I dont have in my list like movie length and viewed yes/no

Heres a picture of my setup

I'm assuming you have to enter the details of each movie as you log it, or have you found a way to pull it in from an external source?

007craft
11-30-08, 05:45 PM
No i enter the details. You may think that would take forever but its actualy faster then a database because databases contain multiples, in which you need to carefully inspect the information, and then some of it may be wrong.

So unless you got a 20000 video collection, you should be able to write in your list into excel over a few weeks taking a few hours to do so. And once its in, adding a new film only takes 20 seconds.

Unfortunately Move Collector V6 has removed access to all of the external databases such as Amazon, DVD Empire, IMDB, etc. Now all you can access is their, Collectorz, own incomplete database. It's a shame, a great piece of software has been fatally crippled. Oh, but after you've tracked down and entered all of the movie information manually, they'd like you to upload it to their database.

I've been using DVDpedia on the Mac and that is nice for cataloging and uploading information to web sites to share with friends.

However, in addition to DVDs media I also have a subset that I have ripped to mp4 files for playing on a Apple TV. I recently discovered MetaX which allows you to add titles, cover artwork, release dates, descriptions, ratings, etc from the internet (no different from traditional cataloging programs). This really adds polish to browsing my mp4 files on the Apple TV.

But...I got to thinking "what if I could use my Apple TV to browse my Blu-ray collection?" So, I created a bunch of dummy mp4 files and starting adding metadata to match the Blu-ray movies that I own. NOw I can browse my Blu-ray collection from the Apple TV.

But...I got to thinking "what if I could use my Apple TV to browse my Blu-ray collection with trailers?" I started pulling down trailer video files and viola. I now now browse my Blu-ray collection on the Apple TV by genre and get summary information about movie -- and some of the titles even have a (relatively low resolution) trailer.

This does take a lot of time though. I was thinking that it would be really cool if somebody made a cataloging program that would pull down trailers in addition to the other metadata. Does anybody know if such an animal exists or is there an easier way to do what I am trying to do?

I love how Drama and Crime are lumped together, but Zombie and Time Travel get their own genres. :)

I've also started using a spreadsheet with IMDB links, though I use OpenOffice. What I like is how I can get the titles to display separately in a boxed set, while still listing the set:

The blue entries are the IMDB links of course. At this point, I'm not sure what other info I'm going to add.

Ok, the de facto solution for Windows seems to be DVD Profiler, unfortunately (in this case), I've recently "gone Mac". I've been looking at Movie Collector, Delicious Monster, and DVD Pedia.

I've never used a tool like this before, so while I have read each of these websites, I'm sorta' at a loss. They all LOOK like fairly decent products, but all of the comparisons in the world (on paper) haven't really helped me too much, since I don't have any practical experience with using a program like this . . . as a result, some of the features sound great, I just don't know if in use, they'd make a difference.

Anyone who is on Mac and has used one or more than one (all three, hopefully?) of these applications care to comment and provide some feedback?

I've never used a tool like this before, so while I have read each of these websites, I'm sorta' at a loss. They all LOOK like fairly decent products, but all of the comparisons in the world (on paper) haven't really helped me too much, since I don't have any practical experience with using a program like this . . . as a result, some of the features sound great, I just don't know if in use, they'd make a difference.

Anyone who is on Mac and has used one or more than one (all three, hopefully?) of these applications care to comment and provide some feedback?

DVD Profiler works in Parallel if you are on Mac... And Parallel is a nice piece of software to have and not that costly.

I've been using DVDpedia for quite some time. I like the ability to export html and being able to sync my collections with an iPhone or iPod Touch lets me easly share my movie lists with others. I'm not sure what more to ask for. It manages lots of metadata and gives you lots of ways to view things including a cover version that I like the most. Well, the one thing that I would ask for is more flexibility to customize the HTML templates. Some of the better ones cannot be edited.

Check out the web sites for DVDpedia and Delicious DVD as they seem to be the most popular.

miata: thanks for the info. Yeah, I've been scouring all three websites, actually. But personal experience tells me that all the feature lists in the world won't help me if I've never used a particular type of software before. It's feedback like yours that helps. Real world experience and "[feature x] is really useful" type of feedback is what seems to be most reliable (to me). Much appreciated.

We're having a snow day here in the Midwest, so I may still put a "feature comparo" table together and post it here. If I do, would love your commentary on other features you use.

Nosferax: yup, I'm running Parallels on my Macs, but that was intended more as a "transition" type thing as I re-bought all of my applications or if I got into a real (unavoidable) pinch on a work project. I'd prefer not to use/buy any software that isn't native to OS X. Really wish the DVD Profiler developers would port it over for OS X -- it sounds like a great program from all the feedback I see here.

Locally you can use 2 apps that are very slick:

If on Mac: Delicious Library 2

If you are on a PC, equally great MediaMan:

Both have good Export To Web features. Both have trial version. Try them out.

Bozster: do you have/use either? If so, would like to hear your impressions.

i have both..they are excellent.. MediaMan's core features are a bit less then Delicious Library but they are fairly similar and can cover most of your needs and they look great.

MediaMan IMO has a much better web support and you can customize your templates if you have the know-how. Delicious Library is pretty fixed in appearance but it's still very nice.

I have decided to make MediaMan my main database after months of using both. I liked MediaMan because it had support for both 32bit and 64bit Windows versions and they seem to be working and updating more often on the app.

Hope that helps.

Ok, another question for anyone on a Mac: which of these integrate with either iTunes or Front Row or AppleTV? Specifically, do any of these applications allow you to play a DVD rip from either inside the application or inside iTunes, Front Row or AppleTV?

There is at least one application out there that facilitates this, but the name of it escapes me at the moment (hasn't been mentioned in this thread so far, I don't think).

OK, the name of the application I was thinking of is called: Drive-In by the same folks who make "Flip4Mac". Link here: http://www.telestream.net/drive-in/overview.htm

But it doesn't do quite what I thought it did. As far as I can tell, it creates a legal (copy protected) image on your HD and then helps mount the image so that DVD player can play it. No real "cataloging" capability.

What I'm looking for is a cataloging tool like many that have been mentioned, that can call or mount a ripped DVD image (will rip my DVDs with Mac The Ripper) once I've navigated to it from a NAS device and either play on the iMac or AppleTV in question. Seems like that's a tall order in the present tense.

Same question here, can you sort by Hd, Blu & dvd?
