i am starting to build out my theater room and was hoping to save $ by building out my own piece of furniture to hold all of my gear, tv, and hide my speakers up front. does anyone know of any good sites that may have some measured drawings that i could use and tweek to my room? i am thinking of a large floor to ceiling built in cabinet in the front of my room to hold it all but don't want to re-invent the wheel if someone has already done one before. Thanks for any ideas!

Normally if you are going to build your own, you would want to locate your equipment some place other than the front of the room so it doesn't distract from your viewing. The best suggestion would be to read/look through several of the start-to-finish build threads here to see how others have hid their equipment, speakers, done cabinets, etc. Most all of these are custom built to fit specific dimensions based upon the specific room. I doubt if you are going to find a dimensioned plan that will work for you but you could easily see something that fits your needs and jsut adapt some dimensions for your room.

Good Luck.

I designed and built a large credenza that my 60" SXRD rear projector sits on top of, with the components housed behind doors. I'm proud of the way it turned out but it sounds nothing like what you're looking for.

For a large section of floor-to-ceiling built ins, you might want to pick up a book on building kitchen cabinets. The modular approach used for kitchen cabinets is really ideal for any section of built-in storage. I bought a prior edition of this book when I was getting ready to build our kitchen cabinets ten years ago: http://www.amazon.com/Building-Traditional-Kitchen-Cabinets-Completely/dp/1561587974/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1218646625&sr=1-1.

It's also possible to order ready-to-assemble cabinet boxes and ready-made doors and drawers. You could probably build them yourself for less money, if you have the tools, but this would likely be faster than DIY and would certainly be cheaper than ordering semi-custom cabinets. I haven't used any of these suppliers, myself, but I've heard good things about this one: http://www.scherrs.com/index.html

You will want to spend some time working out how to vent heat out of the equipment cabinet. Venting heat out of built-in cabinets can be difficult.

Hope this helps. -- Paul

Or if there's plenty of room in the front, build a bunch of shelf or something like that to hold all your stuff. Then close it all up with a screen wall. Seen plenty of those around here.

I ran acorss this thread when I first came to this great AVS Forum. Looks like it began back in 2004 & is still going. Lots of stuff to wade thru, but there's lots of neat projects in there. Enjoy !

There may be some design ideas in Big Reds build thread: This was just a side project, his office.

I built my cabinet off of modified plans from New Yankee Workshop. I don't see the plans for it there anymore though.
