View Full Version : Proper AWG for Subwoofer

I'm about to start running in-wall wiring for my HT ver. 0.1a. The runs will be no longer than 24ft. I have 250ft of 16AWG CL3 wire and I'm curious as to whether this will be sufficient for my subwoofer or should I pick up some larger gauge wire for those runs?

I Looked at some of your other posts for a clue on your sub-woofer of choice. It seems you like SVS. Assuming you will be using one with an integrated amp why wouldn't you be running Coax for the sub with an RCA plug?

Usually we're talking a powered subwoofer, so usually you run line level or coax which works just fine too and is usually easier to deal with (termination-wise). Unless you're putting a passive subwoofer in one location and the amplifier somewhere else, speaker wire usually isn't necessary for it, or recommended.

Yes I have an SVS Sub, good research. Coax huh? We talking RG-6 coax? I was looking at the back of the wall-plate I got from Monoprice and I was wondering why it looked like a cable terminator. The other problem is that the wall plate at the other end is this (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10425&cs_id=1042503&p_id=3325&seq=1&format=1#largeimage) one.

Looks like I need more help than I thought.

Just swap out one of the binding posts with one of these guys and you are good to go. See Parts Express.

Use a quality quad shield RG6 Coax with solid copper conductor. You can use either F or RCA connectors. The F will require a F to RCA adapter.

Okay, I need to find a local place though. I hate paying more in shipping than on the item itself. I'm trying to start this weekend, so I'll hit Lowes, Rat Shack or HD to get some decent RG-6. I'm on the fence about the connections though. I know the new hotness is the compression thing, but I still have a pretty high quality hex crimper. Is this something I should just accept and get the compression connectors?

Also, while this has a different subject . . . do you know of any builds that don't use projectors?

Leave a little extra cable and try your existing crimper. If you don't have any luck you can always cut off the result and make an investment in compression tools.

Thanks. I ordered a bunch of stuff from parts express, including the rca binding posts and some RG-6 to RCA crimp-on adapters.

I can get 90% of the way done and move the sub to the new location. I'll just finish with the new plugs when they arrive.

Seriously, I'm just having no luck finding a build thread on here that uses a non-flat panel or projector. maybe it is my luck?

Well what is the issue with not using the PJ/ flat panel? Either the RPJTV will hang out into the room for a bit, or you would build a fake wall/ shroud around it to give it a clean look.

What specific questions do you have about it, or are you just looking for build similar to yours?

I need a big TV, and unfortunately I'm not looking to blow most of my approved budget on a 65" Plasma, when I can get a 73" or 67" RP for 1/3rd the price. I would love to have a projector, but I have a HVAC trunk that runs perpendicular to the front of the room that would prevent me from placing a projector in an optimum place. It would either be too close (about 6'-7') from the front wall if I place it infront of the obstruction, or too low (<6' high) if I placed it behind.

I'm just looking for ideas beyond the put-the-TV-on-a-table solutions I have been coming up with.

Actually there have been a few. If you go to the "Theater Gallery" section (tab at very top of the page) there are 2300 pics of rear projection based home theaters. You might also try searching in the oldest archives because it was more popular then.

Search in the gallery for PamW. If you look +/- her pics there are some construction pics.

I have seen HTs built around RPs with fabric and or drywall panels creating a false wall flush with the screen.

I've also visited a house that had a projector mounted on the ceiling of a garage shining on the rear of special glass panel creating a superb image in the family room. The dude worked for a company that set up AV rooms for corporate board rooms and had access to the glass cheap.

nothing wrong with the hex crimpers. They're just more labor intensive sometimes. I prefer them for high end coax applications, you can use better connectors like the canare RCAPs for instance.

Thanks Biggie. I didn't think to look in the gallery section. Maybe that's the reason I'm having issues with ideas, not thinking out of the box and all that.

Alright looks like I'm keeping my hex.
