Sup,

I'm looking for a new sound system and i'm mostly interested in clear sound and an especially rumbling bass.

My choices are the Klipsch Promedia 2.1, the Logitech Z-5500, and the Logitech Z-2300. I'm not too worried bout 5.1 or 2.1, but more in the sound and the ability to power the room; the room is about 14x10.

I've heard the Z-5500 at a friends house, and imo, they didn't sound as good as the reviews ive read...Maybe they had them set up incorrectly or something, but the bass just isnt there with music and games. Don't get me wrong, they dont sound bad, but the room i heard them in was much smaller than mine and they didn't seem to be as great as all the reviews.
I've heard nothing but good things from the ProMedia 2.1 and the Z-2300. Thing is, if i wasn't satisfied with the z-5500 in power and bass in general, i dont think these 2.1 will be much better either, but let me know what you think. I haven't been able to test either of these 2.1s, so someone can give me their comparison of the two or which would be a better choice. (dont just say Klipsch if you havent heard either, because theyre nearly the same)

If you have any alternatives that doesnt go above $250, throw them out there. Bass and clarity and power.

Thanks :o

I have the ProMedia 4.1's and having listened to the Logitech Z-5500's, I much prefer the ProMedia's. The issue I've noticed with Logitech is their subs don't sound very good to me (too boomy).

I assume you are hooking these to a PC? Depending on your primary use (i.e. music vs games), I'd be tempted to go surround sound over just a 2.1 setup. Reason being that 3D sound in games (i.e. FPS's) is quite something and makes them that much more immersive. But if you are going for more music than gaming, then a 2.1 setup will probably suffice (although you could always add another 2.1 setup if you wanted).

Something wrong with that 5500 rig, the bass is thunderous from that 10" sub, hell my 2300 in my office rocks the friggin whole house.

Most likely a crappy soundcard and or isn't setup correctly.

Have fun!

Been quite happy with the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 setup for several years now.

promedia, the Z-2300 are horrid, they dont have any midrange at all, just rolled off highs and boomy bass.

I'm going to be hooking them up to the PC and to an Xbox for XBMC. So usually gaming and occasional theater with friends over.
How are the Promedia 5.1 (the promedias are the same as ultra?) in comparison to the Z-5500?

Where is somewhere i can get the Promedia 5.1s if i decide on those? They seem hard to find online =\

I also would absolutely choose the Klipsch over any Logitech set. The Logitechs may have pure volume over the Klipsch, but the Promedias have much higher quality, and also get ridiculously loud themselves.

Are the 5.1 sets still being manufactured??

For your purposes I would probably go with the Z-5500's, if only for the surround sound, remote and multiple inputs (digital and analog). While the Promedia's are better speakers, imho for gaming and HT, surround sound will be more ideal.

Unfortunately, Klipsch discontinued the 5.1 line. I have no idea why and still regret not buying a set to this day. If you can find a setup used, then I'd pounce on it. But if not, go for the Logitechs. The only other option for both surround sound and a better setup than the Z-5500's is to go receiver + regular speakers. But that will cost considerably more.

Thanks for the replies so far. The Z-5500s seem to be the more convenient way out for connections and such. (planning on getting a optical toslink splitter to connect multiple sources to the Z-5500s)
What connection does the Promedias 5.1 have (without DD)?

According to the Klipsch site, the Promedia 5.1's just have 3 stereo miniplugs (for the 6 channels) and the Ultra's have the same, as well as an extra stereo miniplug. They don't have digital inputs.

The Klipsch Promedia 5.1s used to have a decoder available. I don't know if you can still get them at some places. The little box will enable you to connect the speakers to sources with coaxial/optical outputs.

Is this the decoder that came with the later versions?

This has an optical output?

I think that's a control box for the Promedia 5.1 Ultras. Not sure if it has optical connections.

How well does these work:

I'm not an audiophile so as long as it doesnt make my audio scratchy and the sound still works, will this satisfy the job of converting RCA to digital for an amp without a digital input?

thanks again guys :o

depends how you like to listin to your music i have owned all 3 sets and used them for those things pro media were perfect sounding like bose but they lacked that "loudness & power" i would go with 2300 or 5500 mostly 5500 they give the most fun sound for playing games and watchin movies.. the bass is a lil sloppy in the 2300/5500 becuase it is so damn loud..

so if you want to listin to audio abnormally loud :) get the z-5500 or if you want pretty good sound get the pro medias but dell has the z-5500's for crazy cheap for what you get so i would get those... pluss 5500's are readaly avalible not like promedia 5.1... they dont even make them anymore

also

they do have optical and coax

how do you know if the promedias are ultra?
I'm about to buy the ProMedia from someone used and i think theyre the ultra because they come with the silver control box instead of the little black control one.

Is the optical located on the control box or on the rear of the subwoofer if there is one...

I have another question, I have a sony amp that is very good (worth about 500 now, 1000 back in the day), and since it's a bit old, it doesnt have an optical in, but it does have analog rca in.
So i need an adapter/converter to hook up the RCA as an optical to connect a digital signal. Would this converter work: http://www.technologyconnectiononline.com/catalog/DT2AD_Large.jpg
Or does the digital have to be input and the analog output like this one:
http://www.ramelectronics.net/renderImage.image?imageName=products/gefen/gtv-aaud-2-digaud.jpg&width=600&height=500&padding=0 ? What does it mean "samples at 96KHz" ? Does that mean the quality it transfers it to this high end amp is going to be horrible?
