View Full Version : Led Projectors
Greg Young 08-14-08, 03:48 PM I recently read on the web about the incredible potential of Led projectors. No color wheel, no lamp bulbs, better color saturation, high contrast, and a brighter picture. How many years will it be before an led surpasses highend Dlp projectors, or before there is a complete switch over in technology? Any thoughts?

Samsung has made several RP DLPs, but they have problems with brightness which requires the use of a brighter screen causing hot spotting. Mitsubishi's next generation DLP will be laser drive. I believe that's the wave of the future for front projection DLP. The demos of the new Mitsus have been stunning. Regards, Norm
GI Joe Sixpack 08-15-08, 10:05 AM I believe that's the wave of the future for front projection DLP.Ignoring that the new Mits are RPTVs, not FP, lasers are the future of projection like fusion is the future of energy production. Always promised, not yet (affordably) delivered. Lasers have yet to prove themselves in the market; the Mits RPTV's will be a test case.
Re LEDs, Luminus Devices has already demonstrated FP at 700 lumens and is predicting 1000 lumens by year's end. Not quite ready to challenge 6K+ lumen projectors that for the most part still rely on xenon lamps, but on its way.

I like the more succint version - fusion is the power of the future, and it always will be :)

Within 2 years LED will massively outperform current machines, BUT they will still be DLPs.
3 panel machines with local dimming is already well on the way. CR numbers will be meaningless, but high ANSI will still be limited by the glass.
Scanning lasers are no longer being worked on at all, and a number of companies have dropped lasers altogether.

And that's the bottom line, cuase STONE COLDmachine said so!!!:p

What is that supposed to mean? Am I missing something here?

JBLsound4645 08-15-08, 06:26 PM Never heard of the term LED projectors until sometime last year at Dixon’s digital or is it Curry’s digital UK I forget which. This guy openly talked to me about it. For now will call him “deep throat” http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/x-files/images/thumb/4/42/Deep_Throat_and_Joseph_McGrath_meet.jpg/180px-Deep_Throat_and_Joseph_McGrath_meet.jpg :D I was kinder fascinated that scientists had found away to use LED?
It’s low on power consumption longer lasting and with those newer type LED its very bright as well. yes wave to the future, indeed.
inky blacks 08-19-08, 02:21 AM The lasers used for front projection can be stacked; bound together with fiber optics to scale up to any lumen output you want. The new lasers-on-a-chip are cheaper than bulbs and have much more potential than LEDS. You can construct a 20,000 lumen laser projector today with current technology. You cannot say the same about LEDs. All the big projector manufacturers are working on laser projectors.

"Stone Cold" one of my all time favorite movies. The coolest with Brian Bosworth & Lance Henriksen. Ck it out if you get a chance. Brian Bosworth movie career dried up fast.

Yeah, Bosworth did just sort of fall of the face of the Earth, didn't he.

I don't understand either there was no steroid testing in Hollywood.;):D

I let this go for a few days because I wanted to see if anybody here would get it. I see Alan refered to a moive with Bosworth called Stone Cold but this is not what I meant. The attached video is painful to watch but make it through to the end (Or fast forward to the last 20 seconds) and you'll get it then. This was his signature saying at the end of each conversation.
