Hi all,
Can someone please tell me what are the necessary tools (Software/Hardware) to fully calibrate a 9G Non-Elite through the SM ?
I have these things on my mind and I'm not sure which ones are really required:
- Tools for accessing, editing & saving the SM settings.
- DVE HD Basics
- AEMC CA813 Lightmeter
- PR-655 SpectraScan Spectroradiometer
- CalMAN Software (Basic, Standard or Pro)
- i1 Pro (will getting this eliminate the need of getting the CA813 LM & the PR-655).
Any help would be appreciated.

You need
software
color analyzer of some type
test patterns
light meter (not absolutely necessary, but recommended)
There are several software packages. You mentioned CalMan. There is also HCFR. Most others are much more expensive and aimed at pros.
The i1Pro is a good choice for a color analyzer, but it would NOT eliminate the need for the CA813. You will need at least this to measure the Kuro's black level, which is VERY low. I would recommend getting the the i1Pro AND the the X-Rite Display 2, which has MUCH better low-light sensitivity. Then use the i1Pro to profile the Display 2 to increase its accuracy.
There are several good calibration DVDs. I think that the GetGray disc is a good one.
The biggest issue with this display is not the tools but actually getting access to the relevant controls for this display. See the thread just above.

This has nothing to do with your question, which Thom answered, but out of curiosity, have you checked the difference in price of an i1 Pro and a PR-655? I realize that with Oil over $100 a barrel that money flowing to the Middle East as if there is no tomorrow, but that is a very big difference in pricing - like saying, I was thinking about a Volkswagon or a Ferarri.

Thanks a lot for the explanation TomHuffman.
BeachComber, I actually didn't know about the costs, since I'm still a newbie in calibration I just mentioned whatever equipments I've heard for calibrating. Now that I've searched for the PR Spectroradiometer, I can't even find out how much it costs, I'll have to request a quote to see how much it costs, which means they're very expensive (now I know what you meant by Ferrari!) :P. Oh well, just to be clear, I am Not looking for spending thousands of dollars for calibrating tools that are only for personal use :P.
Alright, back to reality, I have these tools on my mind now:
- CalMAN Standard
- Chroma 5 Colorimeter
- AEMC CA813 Lightmeter
But I have a question, how important/useful is the Chroma 5 for calibrating a Non-Elite 9G Kuro with accessing the SM ? because -correct me if I'm wrong-, I think I've heard D-Nice mention that to calibrate a 9G Non-Elite Kuro you'd only need a light meter -hardware wise- ?

Greetings
PR 655 is in the $13K range .... so not an enthusiast gadget unless you are really well off already and have your porsche and yacht.

I think I've heard D-Nice mention that to calibrate a 9G Non-Elite Kuro you'd only need a light meter -hardware wise- ?I sometimes use that term much too loosely. You need either the i1pro or a Chroma 5 on the hardware side.

I've bought my car for less than that :o. I really should've at least searched the thing up before mentioning it :P.

Thanks a lot for replying D-Nice, then the requirements would be:
- ControlCal (SM Access)
- CalMAN standard
- Chroma 5
- AEMC CA813 Lightmeter (How important is it for Calibration ? by now I understand that it's just for measuring black level, or is it for more than that ?)
Anything else ? (like any more softwares needed ? ), which test patterns should be used (from DVE or something done by the forum members ?)
I hope those are my last questions about this subject, you guys are really helping me begin to understand about video calibrating.

I am looking to get the i1pro and calman to explore the DIY calibration route for fun to calibrate my 5090 9G.
I am a bit confused though as to whether I need control cal to gain access to the ISF mode or if calman will do that?
Also, wouldn't I need a usb---->rs232c cable to connect my laptop to the display? I think it is a male rs-232 port on the back of my 9g pioneer....do they sell usb---> female rs-232c cables or do I need to buy a usb---->male rs232c AND a female---->female rs-232c adapter cable?
Thanks.
