So, here is my situation:
I recently purchased my first home after having lived in apartments and condos for several years. My 7.1 home theatre system consists of Polk Audio full-range tower fronts, CS2 center channel, FXi 400 surrounds, CS1 surround backs and a 300watt Polk subwoofer (can't remember the model). Receiver is an Onkyo TX-SR875. This system was more than sufficient in the smaller accommodations that I had previously.
My new home has a living-dining room area that is just immense (by my previous standards). The room has a wood floor and a vaulted ceiling (20ft at the highest point). Room dimensions are approximately 18ft x 30ft with the vaulted ceiling going from 9ft on one side up to 20ft on the inside facing wall.
My problem is that my subwoofer which used to be powerfully room-filling in my previous accomodations is now lost in this cavern! I know the solution is to add a second subwoofer, but I'm also considering the addition of 4 Aura Bass-shaker Pro units to the bottom of my leather couch seating.
My question(s) then become:
1. will the line-level subwoofer output of my Onkyo TX-ST875 be powerful enough to "drive" two subwoofers and the amplifier for the bass shaker units without being pre-amped itself?
2. Is it better to stick with Polk as a subwoofer supplier (I realise they aren't "the best" for this, but I've been content with my current sub), or should I consider going with a specialty sub manufacturer?
My budget for this upgrade is flexible, but not infinite. I think I'd like to keep the sub investment under/around $700. I've already budgeted the funds for the Aura system and have a spare 100 watt per channel pro-amp to run them.
