I need a DVD player that upconverts and will be considered a good CD player as well. I'm not needing SACD or anything fancy, just basic performance but great DVD performance and as good as possible CD performance. Thanks!

I have the 971 and the 983. On a 100 inch screen there is a noticeable improvement in upscaling quality with the 983. Get the 983.

The Oppo Comparison Table helped alot. I have a 60" Sony TV now but I plan to get back into front projection in the next few months so the 983 sounds like the best bet.

My other concern or want was to have a DVD player that also does really well with CD playback. I have a PS3 for Blue Ray and an XBox360 and HD Drive for HD DVD movies but to me neither one of these are really good for CD playback.

I used to own a Toshiba upscaling DVD player about 3 years ago and it had great CD playback but I ended up getting rid of that when I moved.

I sometimes have problems with the PS3 and blu Ray movies. I'm wondering if I should get a Dedicated Blu Ray player that also does CD playback or the 983 and hope that it does good CD playback.

Any thoughts, suggestions on that topic? Again thanks for your advice!

On videogon there's a guy who's selling modded Oppo 983's for that purpose. I believe they were in the $500 - $600 with mods!
