View Full Version : best sub for $1000 or less
audio-junky 08-16-08, 12:26 PM I now have a REL Q201E a 200 watt sub. Its perfect for music its small and the lows are extra tight and clean. The problem is that it is weak with movies not enough boom don't get me wrong it's a strong little sub it just won't bring the house down. What ever new sub I get has to be good with music but, at the same time raise the house off of its foundation.... This decision is really hard for me because most subs I come across are really good with movies and are lousy with music usually too boomy. Is there a perfect sub out there or do I have to sacrifice one thing to get the other?
E-A-G-L-E-S 08-16-08, 12:33 PM A sealed 15" or 18".
eD A7S-450(elemental designs)
Epic Valor(Epik Subwoofers)
Ported from either company will be fantastic as well with MORE output.
Also the MFW-15 from (AV123)(ported) You could possibly get two of those as they give a price break for the second one.
DIY can get you to a PB13-Ultra level for $1K if you have the time.
audio-junky 08-16-08, 12:46 PM never heard of either of these subs where can I demo or buy I have no problems buying and returning if I have too? thanks
E-A-G-L-E-S 08-16-08, 12:50 PM These are internet direct companies.
What they offer for ~$1K,with the exception of the PB13 Ultra, will demolish anything able to be bought in a store for basically double that price.

epiksubwoofers.com

If you must buy at a local hi-fi, I would look into the Def. Tech. Supercube line-up.
audio-junky 08-16-08, 01:03 PM Just went to the Elemental Design website and was checking out the A7 humm interesting I bet it kicks a.. big drivers on these subs. now on my way to Epiks website. I heard of SVS and heard that they are nice sounding just not nice looking.

The best sub for the $ is the HSU Research subs.
E-A-G-L-E-S 08-16-08, 02:15 PM I would disagree, but that is why it is so great to have all the options we have. :)
Take a long listen to a Paradigm DSP-3400. I retails in Canada for 1000.00, so i imagine it can be had for a great deal less in the states. I liked it more than the Hsu. I have never heard a SVS sub so i can't comment. But i'm told they are hard to beat at any price point.
chengbin 08-16-08, 03:51 PM The DSP is a nice sub, but it is not up there with the ID brands and nowhere near cost no object subs. I bet a salesperson told you that they're hard to beat at any price point. That is NOT true. If that's true, why are they in the middle line of Paradigm's subwoofer instead of in the reference? Many $1K ID subs can easily beat the DSP.

"Its pefect for music its small and the lows are extra tight and clean. The problem is that it is weak with movies not enough boom....."
These two findings often coincide. The Ed A7S-450 is popular here. The Epik Valor is another sealed sub that will probably meet your needs.
Look'em over carefully. A real wood finish on a good sealed sub can up the price by quite a bit. SVS makes both black and real wood finish subs. If you can help it try not to let the finish be the deciding factor, no matter which company you decide to go with.
PS When you find the "perfect sub", please let me know which one it is.

Sorry......i was talking about the SVS sub. I was told that was hard to beat at any price point. I haven't had the pleasure of listening to one. In Canada, getting the Great ones shipped up here is a real pain in the ass. You have REALLY got to want one to pay for the Duty and taxes and shipping, and oh god forbid you have to send it in for warrany......there's another couple of hundread bucks gone. We take it up the corn hole for just about everything. Even speakers that are made Down the street from my house...(i.e) Paradigm,Psb, are more money here than in the states. It's very frustrating for me to swallow.
Sorry about the rant boy's.

Sorry about the rant boy's.Canada sounds like a great place to start a HT business, always hearing about something not being sold there or the expensive shipping cost of buying off the net. It would be nice to have a business without any competition around.............
audio-junky 08-20-08, 06:47 PM Sorry for not responding for a few days really busy at work these days, but still doing my research and appreciate all the good advise. I did some reading on the Epiks good pricing, B&Ws Over priced, more RELS over priced, Listened to 15' Paradigm too Boomy for music but dam good for movies and nicely priced. I will be returning to my research and will take my time do to the fact I rushed and spent far too much last time although I do like my little expensive REL it is great with music but, I'm always having the urge to have more ummmmmp with movies and payed way too much for it in my opinion $1500 a few years ago. I'm now finding out that there are a lot of subs that are really good for a lot less. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks a lot.
bobn4burton 08-21-08, 11:08 AM DIY can get you to a PB13-Ultra level for $1K if you have the time.
I've been planning to buy two MFW-15's for my HT because they seemed to be about the best bang for the buck sub(s) around the $1k mark. However...I enjoy DIY products and your statement intrigues me. I wouldn't mind building my own sub if it seemed feasible.
What plans do you suggest following that can get me PB13-Ultra level for $1k? I don't know enough about subs to come up with my own design...but if there is a popular design out there that can get me PB13-Ultra level, I'm very interested?
Anymore information or links that can help me look into this??
Bobn4burton,
Head on over to the DIY forum and ask around. You'll get plenty of help.:)

Heck, you need to be able too cut some wood to exact measurements, route some holes and glue it all together.
Lots of threads have exact build specs....build the parts and follow the instructions.
For $1K you definitely can beat the PB13!!! Finish and size are the only wild cards.
stepyourgameup 08-21-08, 04:20 PM So if someone goes diy, where do you get the driver and the amp? How do you know its any good?
audio-junky 01-26-09, 02:35 PM Forgot about this thread,
